Ross McCormack: Leeds United 'do not need to sell' striker

McCormack began his career in Scotland with Rangers before spells with Doncaster, Motherwell and Cardiff

Leeds United say they are under no pressure to sell captain Ross McCormack after he handed in a transfer request.

BBC Radio Leeds reported on Wednesday that the Scotland international striker had asked to leave on 20 June.

Club owner Massimo Cellino called their financial position "OK" in April.

"Leeds United may not be the richest club in the Championship, but we do not need to sell our best players in order to run the club successfully," the club said in a statement.

"We would like to reiterate our desire to keep Ross McCormack.

"This desire includes keeping all of our best players as we look to build a stronger and successful squad for the 2014-15 Championship season."

McCormack, the subject of a failed bid from Premier League West Ham in January, scored 29 goals in all competitions last season as Leeds finished 16th in the Championship.

He has been linked with a return to Cardiff, the club left in August 2010 to move to Elland Road, as well as Fulham and Newcastle United.
