Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey says his England call-up is recognition of his early season form for Swansea City.

Shelvey has been recalled for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

The 22-year-old has not played for England since his debut as a substitute against San Marino in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win two years ago while at Liverpool.

"It's nice to be recognised for my performances in recent weeks," he said., external

"Hopefully I can show everyone what I can do in the upcoming international matches.

"It's fantastic to be called up by England at any level, but to be called up to the senior side is a very proud moment for me.

"It's a big thing for me and my family. There will be a lot of my relatives in the crowd supporting me."

Jonjo Shelvey's international credentials

Shelvey has also represented England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels.

Romford-born Shelvey was also eligible to represent Scotland because of a Scottish grandmother and the Republic of Ireland through his grandfather.

Shelvey, who joined Swansea from Liverpool for £5m in July 2013, has been a key figure in the Welsh club's impressive start to the season, starting all six Premier League games and scoring one goal.

He was overlooked for England's games against Norway and Switzerland in September but manager Roy Hodgson said the ex-Charlton player "was always going to be in our thoughts."

Hodgson, who was Shelvey's manager at Liverpool, believes he could flourish in the current England set-up.

"The way we're looking to play at the moment could suit him," Hodgson said.

"He's had an excellent start to the season with Swansea. He's there on merit - (a) because of his form and (b) because of the qualities he brings."

Shelvey is looking forward to joining up with the England squad, but is focused on Swansea's game against Premier League strugglers Newcastle United at Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

"My main focus is on the game against Newcastle this Saturday, but I am looking forward to training with England on Monday," Shelvey added.
