Jordi Amat signs Swansea City contract extension

Jordi Amat made 27 appearances for Rayo Vallecano while on loan there from Espanyol in 2012-13

Swansea City defender Jordi Amat has signed a one-year contract extension that keeps him at the club until June 2018.

Amat, 22, had two years left on his initial contract before joining Angel Rangel to become the second of Garry Monk's squad to commit to a longer stint at the club in recent days.

Spaniard Amat joined from Espanyol on a four-year deal for £2.5m in June 2013.

"It's important to know the club has confidence and faith in me," said Amat.

"I work hard every day for this, and the chairman [Huw Jenkins] has been very good to me, so I was delighted to sign an extension."

Amat made 30 appearances in his first season and was alongside skipper Ashley Williams for their first four Premier League games of the 2014-15 season

A knee injury disrupted Amat's progress and he hopes to regain a regular starting spot amid competition from Kyle Bartley and Federico Fernandez, who joined ahead of the current campaign.

"The injury was a tough moment for me, but it happens in football," said Amat.

"You just have to keep working hard and along with the support of the club it makes you stronger.

"I obviously want to play every week, and that's what I work towards in every single training session.

"But I understand the manager has only two players to pick in that position.

"And I do everything I can to show him that I am ready whenever he needs me."
