Shrewsbury Town: Micky Mellon aims for tilt at League Two title

Shrewsbury players donned t-shirts in honour of two fans, Colin Bloomfield and Lloyd Burton, who died this week.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon has called for this Saturday's promotion party against Plymouth Argyle to become a title-winning celebration.

The Shrews, who bounced back into League One at the first attempt by winning at Cheltenham at the weekend, could still finish top of League Two.

That depends on leaders Burton not winning their final game at Cambridge and Town winning at home to Plymouth.

But Mellon says: "Let's just go for it and give it everything we've got."

He told BBC Radio Shropshire: "It's been a terrific effort from day one, right from pre-season.

"It's been in the mindset of everyone to bounce right back and we're delighted to have done that.

"We wanted to do it with a victory and we can go into next week's home game trying to give it our best shot at winning the title, with a fantastic promotion under our belts already."

Town posted a £285,000 loss earlier this month following last season's League One relegation campaign and chief executive Matt Williams and chairman Roland Wycherley have already warned that further losses are expected.

Wycherley has told the club's shareholders losses will continue to be funded from reserves, but warned those are running low and admitted they will struggle to keep on top of them without "an increase in crowds, a cup run or player sales".

That could signal the loss of Town's two star youngsters, midfielder Ryan Woods and defender Connor Goldson, who were both named in the League Two team of the year at the PFA awards dinner in London on Sunday night.

But, for now, Mellon is keen to bask in the glory of another promotion, having taken Fleetwood Town into the Football League three years ago.

"You have to enjoy these moments when they come along," he said.

"It's easy for me to say now that I came here with a clear intention of getting promotion, but I wanted to be part of something that was going to be very successful.

"And the type of player we recruited made me feel that we could carry that out."
