Shrewsbury midfielder James Wesolowski is likely to miss the rest of this season as he must undergo knee surgery.

The 28-year-old Australian picked up a new knee injury in Saturday's 2-1 win against Barnsley at Oakwell, just three games into his return after missing the final four months of last season.

Wesolowski's blow is to the same knee but unconnected to the previous injury.

He will undergo an operation next week, having been given an initial timescale of nine months out this time.

Wesolowski suffered his first knee inury of the year in January when he ruptured both medial cruciate ligament and anterior crucial ligament.

The luckless Aussie also missed last season's Capital One Cup fourth-round defeat by eventual winners Chelsea in October after injuring himself in the warm-up.

Saturday's win, Shrewsbury's first in six games since being promoted back to League One in May, lifted them to 18th in the table.
