We could have scored six - Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said his side "could have scored six" but admitted it felt "like a defeat" to draw 3-3 at Newcastle.

Van Gaal said he had been "very bored" during some United games this season.

But his side produced a more attacking display at St James' Park and were only denied a victory by Paul Dummett's last-minute equaliser.

"Of course it feels like a defeat," said Van Gaal, whose side had led 2-0. "We have given it away."

Manchester United have come under fire for their lack of attacking football and their lack of goals.

But they produced an positive first 45 minutes against Newcastle, with Wayne Rooney scoring from the penalty spot and then setting up Jesse Lingard to double the lead.

After Georginio Wijnaldum and an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty drew Newcastle level, Rooney's superb second put Van Gaal's side ahead again before Lingard and Marouane Fellaini both wasted good chances.

"We threw it away, I have told that to my players," Van Gaal added.

The Dutchman was also unhappy with the penalty given against his side, with Chris Smalling judged to have fouled Mitrovic.

"The referee gives a penalty for nothing," he said. "It is a duel I think and you cannot decide who is worse."

The Paul Scholes view

The United legend has been critical of the team's performances under Van Gaal, but he was in positive mood after the draw at Newcastle.

"Loads better," he said. "Tonight that was like watching a Manchester United team. Okay, they didn't win but they should have won, really.

"I expect positive play from Manchester United all the time, whether you're at home or away.

"Sometimes it's a little bit easier to do it away from home, actually, when a team comes out at you and really has a go like Newcastle did.

"Now they have to try and transfer this type of form to Old Trafford."

Dummett goal felt like winner - McClaren

The Newcastle United boss called the game a "classic" and said it had left him drained on the touchline.

"People said that United were boring and that we lack character, but we kept fighting until the end and we have got a goal that feels like a winner," he said.

"People thought it would be a 0-0 and it was a classic at 3-3. It must have been a great game for the neutral. It was a heart attack for the coaches."

Despite their last-minute leveller, Newcastle remain in the bottom three with 18 points from 21 games.

The Wayne Rooney view

The England skipper took his tally to 14 goals against Newcastle in the Premier League, more than against any other side.

Like Van Gaal, the Manchester United captain was critical of allowing Newcastle back into the game but was pleased with a better display.

"If you take a two-goal lead, we should be taking all three points and killing the game off," he said.

"We didn't take all our chances and we have been punished for it.

"We always want to try and play entertaining attacking football. That is what we work on and try and do."
