Only a few minutes remain. The life looks to have been kicked out of Newcastle by Rooney's second goal.

Save! Rob Elliott keeps Newcastle in the match with a superb save to block a point-blank header from Marouane Fellaini. It was a superb cross from Memphis Depay but the big Belgian is denied.

An immediate response from Newcastle boss Steve McClaren, who sends on Yoan Gouffran for Jack Colback.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has come alive this half. He steals the ball of Daley Blind, who misjudges a long ball forward, and holds off his marker but mis-hits his attempted curling shot from inside the box wide of goal.  

Louis van Gaal needs to change something. His solution is to send on Juan Mata for Ander Herrera, presumably to try and keep hold of the ball, which has been largely in the possession of Newcastle since their second goal.

It is all Newcastle now. Aleksandar Mitrovic gets in the way of a Georginio Wijnaldum shot inside the box. Manchester United clinging on.

The ball is in the net for Newcastle! But the linesman's flag is also in the air! Matteo Darmian breathes a huge sigh of relief after his loose ball gifts possession to Moussa Sissoko but his pass finds the offside Georginio Wijnaldum.

Mike Dean restores balance as Mitrovic is bundled to the ground by Chris Smalling in the Manchester United box and the referee points to the spot.

Jesse Lingard is whipped off, possibly partly as a result of that chance he missed. Memphis Depay replaces him.

Great tackle from Fabricio Coloccini! He is the last man and has Wayne Rooney charging at him but times his lunge to perfection and takes the ball before clearing to set up a counter-attack that ends with Marouane Fellaini and Jack Colback falling to the floor in the box, the home fans shouting for a penalty and Mike Dean waving play on. Colback waited for the contact from Fellaini and fell a bit too easily.

That Lingard chance could have finished the game had it been converted, but Newcastle are hitting back now like a side who know they have been given a second life. A period of home pressure ends with a poor cross into the box that beats everyone, including intended target Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Oh, what a miss from Jesse Lingard! Anthony Martial drives into the box from the left and finds Ander Herrera with a neat pass before the midfielder flicks the ball to Lingard with the goal at his mercy. He has time to pick his spot and somehow finds the stand behind his intended target. Louis van Gaal is absolutely fuming! 

Some Moussa Sissoko brilliance nearly levels the scores! He is found in the Manchester United box by a long forward pass from Fabricio Coloccini before turning Ashley Young inside out to get a clear shot on goal. Not for the first time, though, David de Gea is equal to the shot with a low block.

Newcastle come on strong at the start of the half and Chris Smalling has to be strong to slide in and tackle Georginio Wijnaldum, who was threatening to go clear in the box.
