Paul Wotton led Truro City to promotion to National League South last season

Truro City manager Paul Wotton says fans of the club should be realistic after it was taken over this week.

The National League South side was bought by the Canadian-based consortium that owns Cornwall RLFC from former owners the Cornish Pirates.

Their first decision was to hand Wotton a new 'long-term contract' as City manager having led them to promotion to the sixth tier last season.

But Wotton says new ownership will not mean lavish spending on new players.

"The small squad is down to the budget at the minute," Wotton told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"I haven't had that discussion with the new owners yet, but we're not all of a sudden going to be the Paris St-Germain or Man City of non-league.

"Anyone who thinks that is deluded, you've got to run a business in the right way, and Truro have been there before when it's not gone the right way.

"I've been involved at football clubs, Plymouth Argyle and Southampton, that have both gone into administration so there's no open chequebook."

Wotton joined Truro in the summer of 2019 and led the club to the top of Southern Premier League South in his first season before it was called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last season he led the White Tigers to a third-placed finish in the seventh-tier league and victory in the play-offs, allowing Truro to return to the sixth tier for the first time since 2019.

The club has spent the majority of Wotton's tenure away from Truro after their former home at Treyew Road was sold off for development.

But they will return in the summer as work continues on a new ground in the city.

"To sign a contract extension was a no-brainer for me, people know how committed I am to the football club," Wotton added.

"I've had opportunities to go before and I've turned them down.

"With the new owners coming in it's an exciting time. It coincides with the best news of the day that next year we'll be playing back in Truro, which I can't emphasis how important that is. Everyone knows it's vital to the success and development of the football club.

"The new owners who have come in with an exciting vision and the ambition matches mine, so all in all a great day."
