Truro City manager John Askey says the club's first ever National League win is a "huge lift" after losing their first five matches of the season.

Rekeil Pyke struck his first City goal on the stroke of half-time, Tyler Harvey converted a 49th-minute penalty and Will Dean fired in five minutes later as The Tinners beat Boston United 3-0 at home on Saturday.

"Everybody at the football club is just relieved," said Askey, whose Truro side are the first Cornwall club ever to be promoted to the fifth tier after winning the National League South title last season.

"It gives everybody a huge lift. It gives us belief. It's onwards and upwards now. It's got to be the start for us all, but we're not getting carried away."

Truro had failed to score in their preceding home defeats by York City and Southend United but captain Harvey hit the crossbar and winger Yassine En-Neyah was unlucky not to find the net before summer signing Pyke broke the deadlock.

"It's not great for the supporters when your team's losing but I think they can see that the players have been giving their all," said Askey.

"We've been unlucky and played some good teams in York and Southend.

"We played really well again [against Boston]. The difference probably was that we got the first goal and the momentum went from there.

"We looked as though we were going to create chances every time we got in the box. It could have been more.

"We didn't settle for being one up - we kept pushing and it was a big relief to get the other two goals."

New goalkeeper Aidan Stone replaced Dan Lavercombe as Truro moved a point from safety before the visit of 12th-placed Aldershot Town on Wednesday (19:45 BST).

"His kicking and talking was good," said Askey.

"Dan was probably a little bit unlucky not to play but we just thought things had not been going for us and we'd changed everything else, so we changed that [too]. I'm sure if Dan had played, the result might have been the same.

"If we can get a result on Wednesday, it changes things massively for us."
