Courtney Baker-Richardson's goal ended a run of six defeats for Newport

Courtney Baker-Richardson rescued a precious point for Newport County at Tranmere Rovers to end a run of six straight defeats.

The visitors had shaded the opening half-hour, with Cameron Antwi's low cross -intercepted by Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy - the closest Newport came to goal.

Instead it was Rovers who took the lead when Newport's defence failed to deal with Connor Jennings' header, allowing Jayden Joseph to poke the ball home from close range.

Jennings could have grabbed a second soon after but could only find the side-netting from Omari Patrick's corner.

Patrick was unfortunate not to double the lead after the break, with Nik Tzanev saving on the line before the Rovers winger hit the bar from range.

Newport thought they had found an equaliser when Gerard Garner had the ball in the net, only to be denied for offside.

But forward Baker-Richardson arrived off the bench to make it 1-1, finishing expertly on the turn.

Both sides had chances to win it in a frantic finale but a draw was probably just about right - with the point allowing the Exiles to stay out of the relegation places on goal difference, while Tranmere are 16th in the League Two table.
