Newcastle v Ipswich (Sat 15:00 BST)

Quick detour from Arsenal and Arteta - Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has returned to duty. A statement from the club read:

"Newcastle United are delighted to confirm that Eddie Howe has returned to his duties at the club’s Training Centre.

"Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery.

"We thank supporters for their warm wishes."

Howe missed three games - against Manchester United, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa - due to pneumonia. Newcastle won two of those games under the stewardship of assistant manager Jason Tindall. He will now be able to oversee his team against Ipswich this weekend.

I've got hooked on stalemate statistics now!

The record for most draws in a single 38-game Premier League season is 17, and that's held jointly between Newcastle (2003-04), Aston Villa (2006-07 and 2011-12) and Sunderland (2014-15).

Arsenal have 13 draws after 34 games.

Another title is likely to pass them by...

Arsenal have also failed to convert draws into wins this season - another reason why they have failed to keep pace with Liverpool.

Their 13 draws this season is more than any other team in the Premier League, except Everton, who have one more.

In their past four outings, they have been held by Everton, Brentford and Crystal Palace.

Brighton, in 10th, and 12th-placed Palace have played out 12 draws each this season.

"We haven't been able to see the games off for too many reasons and the margins have been too small," Arteta said when asked about their 13th draw of the season yesterday.

"Sometimes it's credit to the opposition and sometimes it's because we played five times with 10 men. There are a lot of factors."

    Cheers Michael and Gav.

I've found another Arsenal draw stat.

Last night's was Arsenal's ninth Premier League draw in a match they were leading, two more than any other side this season.

If you're a Tottenham fan following this morning don't get too smug though. Your side holds the all-time draws-after-leading single-season record. (2007-08)

I think a lot of people in the chat are seriously underestimating the affect on injuries in Arsenals season. City lost Rodri this season and their whole season fell apart. They were favourites for the PL and Champions league at the start and now struggling to make top four. Few years back Liverpool lost Van Dijk and just about got fourth. Arteta has lost his best player, captain, and key players like White and Havertz for months. We had no attack for two months. He’s barely complained about it and is second (albeit a distant second) in the league and two games away from a champions league final. In my opinion that’s very impressive.

I think Arteta will be furious.

They will be fine for qualifying for the Champions League but you want to put it to bed as soon as you can.

If they’d have won [against Crystal Palace], you could write the Bournemouth game off in between PSG and rest the whole team. I don’t think he’s in a position to do that now as Liverpool come after that.

If they lose the next two games then they're just behind you and they still have to play Newcastle. You just don’t want to be looking over your shoulder.

Finishing second place is like hitting the post. Yeah, it was super close in terms of being a goal, but it isn’t, so you might has well have hit the corner flag.

Thanks Paul, Dan and all those who have got in touch so far.

As Dan says, Arsenal have had 13 draws this season, six more than Liverpool and the second-most in the league behind only Everton (14).

Arsenal have only lost three games compared to Liverpool's two. It's those 13 draws that have cost them.

Spurs fan in peace. Arteta has done a great job considering where Arsenal were. However, I do think he needs something soon or they’ll become no more than late Wenger Arsenal - CL qualification and no more.

    Paul

Arsenal are in the position we (Liverpool) were a few years back. Good enough to contend but just a few too many draws. Once they iron that out they will bag a title I'm sure. Arteta has brought them on tremendously, I can't see why anyone would even think of moving him on.

  10. Arsenal's title race all but overpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 24 April

Premier League tableImage source, Getty Images/BBC Sport

Arsenal dropping further points last night means that Liverpool are ever closer to lifting the Premier League trophy for the second time.

Arne Slot's Reds only need a draw against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday to confirm their 20th league title in front of their supporters.

That would move them to 80 points with four games left.

Arsenal, on 67 points, only have 12 points remaining to play for and so can only collect a maximum of 79 points now.

If Liverpool lose to Spurs, Arsenal would have to beat Bournemouth on Saturday to delay the title celebrations for the Reds, who will then need a draw against Chelsea the following day.

Arsenal can still win the title, but only on goal difference and if they win all their remaining games and Liverpool lose all theirs.

I honestly think Arteta is the problem at Arsenal. He’s far too emotional and he has his players far too emotional as well. Instead of taking each game as it comes, every game is treated like a cup final no matter how far into the season it is. Arsenal have the most bookings for time wasting this season, which is something you would expect from a team fighting to stay up not going for the title. Arteta himself was booked for throwing a tantrum over a throw in on the half way line a few weeks back. I know every manager and their team can let the occasion get the better of them at times, especially in big games, but it seems to happen to Arsenal far too often. He is a good manager, he just needs to chill out.

I think you have to take stock when a manager that has spent almost a billion pounds continually fails in his goals. And before any of those Arsenal fans say it, it isn't injuries, it isn't VAR, it isn't the PGMOL, it isn't the ball used in the Carabao Cup (possibly my favourite one). Arteta has not been good enough to win the Prem.

    Anon

Arsenal need to stop using ‘injuries’ as the reason why they’re not winning trophies this season. Depending on a Champions league title, a couple of good performances, a favourable last 16 draw, and a resounding victory over an out of form and poor Madrid, this isn’t a good season. I watch Arsenal and admire how they play and generally control games, but what’s the point if you have nothing to show for it? Sign a striker this summer and give Arteta one more season. But if that doesn’t get you trophies, who do you replace him with?

    K, Newport

As an Arsenal fan I think we made too many mistakes which cost us, each time we went a goal ahead we took the foot off the gas and slowed the play right down, clearly because of the Champions League in sight. Personally, I think we have lost the league through too many individual errors.

While Arsenal are undoubtedly a good team, and very good defensively, it’s clear they’ve gone backwards this year in terms of creativity and attacking threat. And they actually got more ppg and more goals per game when Saka was injured so you can’t blame that. They desperately need to beat PSG otherwise it looks like a couple of unexpected Declan rice free kicks (the first he’s ever scored in his career) will have papered over the cracks this season.

Interesting time for an Arsenal wobble with a strong & Europe chasing Bournemouth next and then a trip to Liverpool. Second isn't looking so nailed on right now.

  16. But is second place secure for Arsenal?published at 09:06 British Summer Time 24 April

    FT: Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace

    Arsenal

Arsenal have now dropped points in three of their past four Premier League games, with leaders Liverpool now 12 points away from the Gunners with a game in hand.

But is a second-placed finish a given for Mikel Arteta's side?

Manchester City climbed to third with a thrilling win against Aston Villa this week and they are only six points behind Arsenal now.

Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, who are seven and six points behind, both have a game in hand to cut the gap to Arteta's side.

Arsenal also have continental commitments as they shift their focus to the Champions League semi-finals against Paris St-Germain and potentially a final.

That means Arteta will have to juggle his squad in the coming weeks, and amidst their poor run of form in the league, their rivals will sense an opportunity to usurp them from second place.

Re Emil @8.21 and the Sistine Chapel. Sorry to be really pedantic about this, but the building that the chapel is housed in is very plain and unspectacular. It's the painting on the ceiling by Michelangelo, which makes it famous and that only took 4 years. Apologies for the most boring BBC Sport reaction ever!

    Jay, Liverpool.

RE your question on how long to build Rome, Joe - depends on the medium. If we're talking real Rome, I'd say almost certainly more than two days; if we're playing Age of Empires, oh boy, we could've built a glorious Rome and be heading off on conquests in mere hours! I wonder if Arteta plays.

    Tom

@Emil. The Sistine chapel actually isn’t in Rome. It’s in Vatican City. The original question was How long did it take to build Rome. Not the Sistine Chapel.

Reading some of the Arsenal messages here, I worry some of readers may think it's Arteta Out at the Emirates. All we've ever wanted is a team justifying our move from Highbury; a team that can compete with the big boys. And this team is the first that can hold it's own with the City and Liverpool that has dominated the last 8-10 years. Arteta took over a rag tag of very expensive misfits and now we have a young team we can connect with, sprinkled with some Hale End graduates. We love this team and we love what Arteta has done. Winning something is more important for keeping the team together (Saliba, Gabriel) than whether or not Arteta should stay. Yes, he absolutely should stay.

    Jason

Arsenal were poor last night, but were clearly focused on getting through unscathed before the Champions League semi-final. This is the best Arsenal team for years, and I predict they'll win the Premier League next season. They are too good not to.

    Jon

No-one is saying "second is okay". They're saying "second isn't panic stations". If you think you sack your manager for coming second, I'm incredibly glad you're not the one running my football club.
