This will be the sixth all-English final in European competition - with all of those involving either Tottenham or Chelsea.

England is the first country to have so many in Uefa competition (excluding the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup).

Tottenham beat Wolves for the 1972 Uefa Cup final and Manchester United defeated Chelsea to win the 2008 Champions League.

In 2019, both finals were all-English - with Liverpool beating Tottenham in the Champions League and Chelsea seeing off Arsenal in the Europa League.

Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League in 2021.

The brilliant thing about the build-up to any big game is that hope can take over.

At this stage, the supporters are enjoying the moment and daring to dream.

Sure, there will be butterflies, but anything is still possible.

Fans in Bilbao will soon be making their move towards the San Mames Stadium.

Stick with us for the next few hours as we soak up the scenes.

  6. Which club would be hit hardest by defeat?published at 15:23 British Summer Time 21 May

Tottenham v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

Tottenham's former assistant coach Steffen Freund, who also won League Cup with Spurs as a player in 1999, has been speaking with BBC Sport's editor Dan Roan.

He said that Manchester United need the win more, adding: "If they lose they’re in big trouble."

Freund is referring to pressure on United's finances as they bid to build a squad more in line with manager Ruben Amorim's requirements, and how qualification for the Champions League, which is estimated to be worth £100m, would help to ease that pressure.

However, another former Spurs player, Paul Robinson, told BBC Sport's Football News Show that he believes defeat would be worse for Tottenham.

Local police have reported minor clashes between supporters in Bilbao and San Sebastian, which is 48 miles away.

However, no arrests have been made and the atmosphere between Manchester United and Tottenham fans in Bilbao is said to be generally friendly.

There will be three security rings around San Mames stadium for tonight's Europa League final and more than 1,500 officers have been put on duty, with all special units working.

BBC Sport has been told that, given the amiable atmosphere, there are no plans for police escorts to accompany fans from the city centre to the stadium.

Europa League final is an opportunity to go into next season on a huge high for Man Utd

Champions League winners Denis Irwin and Andy Cole have been speaking with BBC Radio Manchester from the club's fan park in Bilbao.

Both players helped Manchester United become European champions in 1999, when Sir Alex Ferguson's side famously beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Champions League final in Barcelona to seal the Treble.

"This result doesn’t cloud the fact it’s been a poor season for us domestically, but we’ve got an opportunity tonight to not just win a cup but get into the Champions League and actually go into next season on a huge high on the back of this," said Irwin.

While Cole added: "People need to understand to play for a club like Manchester United, you’ve got to be a special individual. You’re going to have ups and downs, you’re not going to win every game, but you’ve got to understand what it means to these fans. They would give their right arm to play for Manchester United, so you wear the shirt with pride and give everything you’ve got."

Manchester United and Tottenham were both allocated about 15,000 tickets for tonight's Europa League final, with the remainder given to Uefa sponsors or bought by neutrals, including officials, other sponsors and guests.

The capacity of Estadio San Mames - the host stadium - is 53,000, but that has been reduced to 49,600 for the final.

Both teams have been designated fan zones in separate areas of the city, where it is hoped they will congregate before the match, which kicks off at 20:00 BST (21:00 local time).

United's is in Etxebarria Parkea, with a capacity of 20,000 and beer costing five euros, although pictures coming into us suggest many have chosen to congregate in the city's Plaza Nuevo instead.

Club legends Denis Irwin and Andy Cole have been in attendance at the United fan park, which is also hosting performances from Liam Fray of the Courteeners and Mani from the Stone Roses.

Tottenham's designated area is in Ametzola, where fans have been promised a countdown to kick-off with live music and special guest appearances, including former players Ledley King and Gary Mabbutt.

It's less than five hours now to kick-off in Bilbao, where it is all or nothing for Manchester United and Tottenham as they prepare to contest the Europa League final.

For the winners - a major European trophy and entry into next season's Champions League.

The losers? Well, no European football next season is going to be a bitter pill to swallow - a summer of recriminations is sure to start at the final whistle.

Looking at the combined XI results so far, it's looking like defence favours Tottenham and attack favours Man United...0-0 it is then!

    Anders

When comparing each player to player, the Spurs defence looks a lot better, but in a combined 11, I believe at least one Utd defender gets in. For example, Yoro has been a fantastic young talent. Utd also have a better defensive record this season.

A bit more than a year ago Harry Maguire was told by the then coach [Erik ten Hag] that he was in the firing line.

For me, he's been the best defender in the squad. He might not be the quickest player on the planet, but he's clever.

When you're a goalkeeper playing behind him it makes your job easier because you don't have to worry about what he is doing.

None of those players have really won a trophy for United or a European trophy at least, so it’s difficult to see how much influence history has.

It’s all in how the manager positions it. I think if he gives it a little bit of that nostalgia in the team talk and the expectations of the fans, and balances it in the right way, then they will have a good chance. They have players who can win them a game, and talented attacking players who can hopefully be game winners.

Rasmus Hojlund has been stuck in his development with the way his team plays.

They never cross the ball to him and as a number nine you need to have that. He wears defenders down - the ball might not stick with him, but he chases everything.

With Rasmus, I still think he can be the guy. I think there's certain things that need to happen, the team needs to play in a different way, but I think he has got the potential.
