Arsenal should get the job done easily against West Ham, but Foord and Russo will need to step up in the forward line if they want to score goals, especially in the absence of Kelly and with Smith on the bench.

New Manchester City boss Andree Jeglertz has urged the side to "take the next step" by claiming their first Women's Super League points of the campaign at home to Brighton.

"Everything is about getting our first win on Friday," said Jeglertz. "And we need to have a good performance to take that next step."

The Blues already have ground to make up on their rivals after falling to a narrow 2-1 defeat away to reigning champions Chelsea on matchday one.

And Jeglertz knows that his side are in for another "challenge" this evening.

"Brighton is an interesting team because they can ask questions of us. It is difficult team to scout. They are possession based and have a couple of rotations and tactical moments in the game that can give us challenges."

  4. 'Smith isn't worrying about her £1m price-tag'published at 19:22 BST 12 September

Olivia Smith's goal at the Emirates last week was an amazing hit. You have to credit her for having the confidence, but also her teammates and manager for giving her the confidence to go out there and showcase who she is.

She isn't worrying about her £1m price-tag or anything like that. She just constantly wanted to get on the ball and challenge the right-back in that opening game.

She really helped Arsenal turn the momentum of the game because, for the first 10-15 minutes, London City Lionesses were showcasing themselves and Arsenal were struggling to get hold of the game.

Fans heading to Joie Stadium this evening have the chance to see the Euro 2025 trophy, won for a second successive time by England's Lionesses this summer.

Earlier this afternoon it was announced that Sarina Wiegman's side will be playing over the road at Etihad Stadium against Copa America champions Brazil next month, in the first of a four game 'homecoming' series.

They then play Australia at Derby County's Pride Park on Tuesday, 28 October before fixtures against China on Saturday, 29 November, at Wembley, and Ghana on Tuesday, 2 December at Southampton's St Mary's.

  6. 'The talent we have in this squad is crazy'published at 19:15 BST 12 September

West Ham v Arsenal (19:30 BST)

    Arsenal

Arsenal striker Alessia Russo speaking to Sky Sports about starting the season with a win: "It was a great start for us. It was nice to be back at the Emirates with all of our fans and to kick off our campaign in that way. Every game counts and every performance matters, so we want to keep it going."

On the Gunners' squad depth: "The talent we have in this squad is crazy. It is really competitive but it is great. We are playing against some of the best players in the world every day in training, so we are able to prepare really well. Everyone is ready for whenever they're called upon this season and we have really good squad depth."

On contributing with an assist last time out: "I'll contribute in any way I can. I'm a striker so I want to be involved in the goals and the assists. I want to help the team as best as possible, so as long as we keep winning I'll be happy."

  7. Mead's 'impact and quality shone' in opening gamepublished at 19:14 BST 12 September

    Ellen White
England Euro 2022 winner on BBC Women's Football Weekly

If Arsenal are able to keep everyone fit this season, it would go a long way for them fighting for the title and challenging for the major trophies.

Beth Mead would've been disappointed to not start in the opening game, but she showed her mentality to come on and get two assists in two minutes. Her impact, her professionalism and her quality shone.

She showed that she is a key player for Arsenal still and she just quietened those rumours that she is going to leave. She does love Arsenal.

The summer months of 2025 have been unforgettable for goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The 24-year-old helped Nigeria win a record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations title in July, a month after securing a dream move to the Women's Super League when she joined Brighton from Paris FC.

To cap it off, she became the first African goalkeeper to be shortlisted for the Women's Ballon d'Or award.

"It is a miracle for me. It shows that all the hard work, dedication and everything I've been doing in the past, has been worth it," Nnadozie told BBC Sport.

"The world has been watching. It will make a very big impact in Africa because we have so many good players and they just need the opportunity to show what they can really do.

"It lets others know that everything is achievable and everything is possible. This nomination is not just for me, it is for Africa.

"It is for every young girl dreaming to become whatever they want to be. They just have to believe in themselves."

  11. Man City 'quite exposed' without Hemp on left wingpublished at 18:59 BST 12 September

    Ellen White
England Euro 2022 winner on BBC Women's Football Weekly

I was confused about Lauren Hemp playing out on the right against Chelsea. She is one of the best left-wingers in world football and she has been for a number of years.

She could've helped deal with the threat of Ellie Carpenter running up and down that wing, but Manchester City opted for young Lily Murphy on that side with Alex Greenwood. I felt they were quite exposed because of not having Hemp on that left-hand side.

Brighton boss Dario Vidosic has urged his side to improve on their opening day draw as they head north to take on Manchester City this evening.

The Seagulls were involved in the only league game that failed to produce goals last weekend, as they and Aston Villa battled to a goalless stalemate.

"In general, the feeling is that we could have done more and we obviously wanted to win the game, so we are frustrated with that, said Vidosic.

However the Brighton boss says that his side can use last week's result to continue to build confidence in these early stages of the campaign.

"We kept the clean sheet. I think we should take that into the next game. We want to build that confidence from the clean sheet, we are pleased with that."
