Aston Villa have reached the fourth round just twice in their last nine attempts.

Peterborough beat them 3-1 in 2018 and Stevenage snatched a dramatic late 2-1 third round win at Villa Park two years ago, early into Unai Emery's reign.

West Ham's recent record is not much better. Since losing the 2006 final to Liverpool, the Hammers have only reached the sixth round twice, suffering defeats to Bristol City, AFC Wimbledon and Wigan.

  2. Sutton's predictionpublished at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January

    Wycombe v Portsmouth (19:45 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    BBC Sport's football expert

Wycombe are absolutely flying at the top of of League One, and they are top scorers in their division with only one defeat in their past 22 games.

They have a few players attracting interest from bigger clubs, including striker Richard Kone who only joined them from non-league Athletic Newham a year ago.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho spent a couple of years at Wycombe as a player, but I don't see this being a happy return for him - I see an upset here.

Sutton's prediction: 1-1, Wycombe to win on penalties

    Wycombe v Portsmouth (19:45 GMT)

Both of these sides haven't reached the fourth round of the FA Cup for a number of years.

League One high fliers Wycombe last did so in 2020-21, while Portsmouth haven't progressed from the third round since the 2019-20 campaign.

Only five league places separate Wycombe and Portsmouth, but the Chairboys are in the division below.

They are currently second in League One, are the division's top scorers and trail leaders Birmingham City by just two points.

They missed out on a chance to go top of the third tier on Tuesday when they suffered a 1-0 defeat by Huddersfield.

Pompey, meanwhile, have struggled in the league. They are 21st and have won just five of their 24 games in the Championship this term.

The visitors may be a league above, but it will definitely be a difficult encounter.

The general consensus is Graham Potter is a steal for West Ham, right?

I've not seen anyone really query the decision.

    Kevin Nolan

When I look at the games that have gone past in the past six months there was a lot of chopping and changing [with West Ham's team].

What you will get is consistency from Graham Potter and that will help the lads settle.

I believe he will be successful.

  10. Potter's record at Chelseapublished at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January

After three-and-a-bit seasons in charge of Brighton, Potter took the chance to manage Chelsea.

What seemed like the perfect step-up quickly turned into a nightmare though, with Potter sacked after just seven months in the job.

He left Stamford Bridge in April 2023 after winning only seven of his 22 Premier League games, with seven draws and eight defeats. He hasn't held a managerial position since - until now.

  12. What was Potter like at Brighton?published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January

Graham Potter achieved great things in Sweden with Ostersunds - he took them from the fourth division to Europe - but it was at Brighton that he made a name for himself in England.

Potter oversaw 120 Premier League games with the Seagulls, including 34 wins, 44 draws and 42 defeats.

While his win percentage was only 28.3%, that doesn't tell the story of the countless players he improved and the role he played in turning Brighton into an established top flight side.

I'm sure Potter will wheel out his players, put his own spin on the shape and dish up something for the cup.

    On Graham Potter's appointment...

I genuinely think that this could work.

I don’t know which managers have worked, exepct from David Moyes at West Ham.

They like to chop and change and they’ve got to stop that if they want to move forward.

West Ham's technical director Tim Steidten had a difficult relationship with David Moyes and last week kept away from the training ground as speculation over Julen Lopetegui's future intensified.

Potter was asked about whether he will be happy to work with Steidten and although he didn't answer directly, he said that there has to be a "collaborative" approach.

"There'll be lots of talented people, I'm sure," said Potter. "Part of our approach is to be collaborative, to work together. As I said, we need everybody to be pulling in the same direction. We need to be aligned, we need to use the resources we have.

"In the Premier League, there's lots of good players, lots of good coaches.

"So unless you're together, unless you're moving forward together, it becomes very difficult.... and my first impressions for everybody has been really positive."
