And this is the foot of the table, with that Plymouth victory - as well as Luton's first win of the season, against Millwall - tipping Pompey into the bottom three.

Any kind of positive result for Pompey today will take them above that line again, with three points enough to send them soaring into the top half of the table.

Here's the top of the Championship table, with West Brom aiming to take advantage after Sunderland's 100 per cent record came to an end at Plymouth yesterday.

This is the first meeting between Portsmouth and West Brom in more than 15 years – both clubs were still members of the Premier League when they last locked horns at Fratton Park in April 2009.

On that occasion, Niko Kranjcar earned Pompey a point after goals from Jonathan Greening and Chris Brunt had followed Younes Kaboul’s first-half opener for the home side.

The Baggies haven’t won on any of their last three visits to Fratton Park – the last time they were successful was in September 2001, when Scott Dobie scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory.

If omens mean anything, Albion were promoted to the Premier League at the end of that season…

Winger Josh Murphy, who joined Portsmouth from fellow promoted side Oxford during the summer, makes his debut as one of three changes from the side that lost to Sunderland before the international break.

Defender Tom McIntyre makes his first appearance of the season, while Paddy Lane is also in the starting line-up. Ryley Towler, Sam Silvera and Matt Ritchie all drop to the bench.

West Brom are unchanged from the side that beat Swansea in their last outing, with new signings Mikey Johnston and Mason Holgate both included among the substitutes.

QPR’s Lucas Andersen and Stoke forward Lewis Koumas, the teenage son of former West Brom star Jason, are the only members of an exclusive club – players to have breached the Baggies’ back-line so far this season.

Albion’s defence is the meanest in the division and one of the main reasons that they remain one of three teams yet to experience the sour taste of Championship defeat in the 24/25 campaign.

Only Leicester and Leeds conceded fewer goals than West Brom last season, underlining the solid foundations built by Carlos Corberan since his arrival at The Hawthorns almost two years ago.

The flip side is that – despite Josh Maja’s four goals in as many appearances – Corberan’s side haven’t been all that prolific at the other end of the field.

The Baggies have registered the Championship’s lowest number of shots from outside the penalty area, but if they can find the net more often than their opponents this afternoon, top spot is beckoning.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has hinted a return to the high-pressing style that catapulted his side to the League One title last season may be imminent as they search for their first victory back in the second tier.

Mousinho’s men have drawn three of their four games so far this season and sit 22nd in the table, but would climb into the top half if they can pick up three points against West Brom. A draw would lift them out of the bottom three.

“We haven’t pressed as high as we’d usually like to press this season,” the Pompey boss told BBC Radio Solent.

“We went all out and pretty much pressed every side we played against last season, but we have to be maybe a bit more practical in the Championship, because of some of the sides we face.

“It’s something we want to get back to when we have the personnel and the fitness in the tank – you may see that change in the next couple of weeks.”

Fratton Park is bathed in sunshine for today's Championship clash between Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion.

Carlos Corberan's West Brom can go top of the league with a win here today, unbeaten so far with three victories and a draw.

Meanwhile, John Mousinho and his Portsmouth side are still searching for their first win, drawing their first three before most recently losing to Sunderland.

On a side note it's nice to see Portsmouth striker Colby Bishop here in attendance today after his recent heart surgery.

He is not in Portsmouth's 25 man league squad so would at minimum not expect to see him until 2025.
