  1. 'An opportunity to attack the challenge' - Dychepublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Everton v Peterborough (19:45 GMT)

It's the little things which Everton will be unable to remove from the matchday preparation - one of which is Sean Dyche's programme notes.

Dyche referred to tonight's game as "an opportunity to attack the challenge," it will be Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman who will lead that "attack" from the touchline.

In the programme Dyche added: "As we turn our attentions away from the Premier League to the FA Cup, there is an opportunity to attack the challenge in front of us and look to start building some positive momentum after a couple of disappointing results."

To me it's a strange decision at a very strange time. Everton are in a relegation battle and a manager like Dyche is needed to survive it. I don't see any obvious candidates to replace him. Should have let him finish the season and his contract. A big decision - hope it's the right one.

Dyche sacking inevitable with Freidkin’s takeover. Despite battling at bottom last few years I was always confident we’d get out of it but this year feels different and could see us getting sucked right down there during Jan & Feb. Good affirmative action from new owners.

  6. 'A chaotic hour at Goodison Park'published at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Giulia Bould
BBC Radio 5 Live Reporter at Goodison Park

Its been a chaotic hour at Goodison Park. I don't think anyone expected this as Sean Dyche held his press conference on Tuesday.

I asked Sean Dyche on Tuesday, 'Do you think you have got the backing of the fans?'

And, he kind of brushed it off and even he knew people had lost patience.

  9. How does this impact Peterborough?published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

Everton's FA Cup opponents for tonight, Peterborough, surely must be encouraged by the timing of this announcement.

Have the Everton players had any training under Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines? Quite possibly not.

It also remains to be seen what the atmosphere inside Goodison Park will be like after Sean Dyche was relieved of his duties just hours before kick-off.

  10. West Ham act to secure Potterpublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

One man who is certainly ruled out of possibly taking over at Everton is Graham Potter after he was announced as West Ham manager this morning.

Did the Hammers act fast in securing their choice?

Sean Dyche. Massive job to save us twice from relegation against a backdrop of total turmoil and points deduction that was aimed at sinking us. Built strong defences and responded strongly to every challenge. In the words of Walter Smith, "The right club, but maybe the wrong time." In years to come Dyche's achievement and contribution will stand the test of time.

Surely the obvious answer for Everton is David Moyes. A legend at the club and he's out of work.

The Friedkin Group isn't shy about bringing some nostalgia to the fans, just as they have done with Roma.

Daniele De Rossi played for Roma for 18 years and was then appointed manager in January 2024 before being dismissed in September. In then came the much-loved Claudio Ranieri.

Could they do the same with Everton and opt for a return for David Moyes?

A source close to the Friedkin Group told BBC Sport that the timing of sacking hours before a game was not ideal but the group wanted to stand firm on their decision.

There have been a couple of days of talks this week between ownership and Sean Dyche with both sides feeling they had reached the end of the road. The decision to make an immediate change was then made.

Difficult negotiations have taken place over an exit package for Dyche and his staff and a settlement was reached.

They are hopeful of making a quick appointment, before the next game v Aston Villa next Wednesday.

  18. Carsley, anyone?published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

Of course, when your manager is sacked, the first thing you do is think about who could be next in the door.

Former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley may not be a bad shout. The 50-year-old is the current England U21 boss and has recently had a stint in charge of the England senior team.
