It's not just Everton v Peterborough, it's father v son, Ashley Young v Tyler Young - or at least it could be if both men get off the bench tonight.

Despite having Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Serie A winners' medals in his collection, Young Snr says playing against his son would be the "pinnacle."

"I think Tyler would say it's old v young. It's really special for me. I've been saying for years that if there was any way we could play against each other or with each other, out of my whole career, it would be the pinnacle," Ashley told BBC Breakfast.

That's as close as Sheffield United have come.

A corner is swung right under Ethan Horvath's crossbar and the Cardiff keeper does well to get anything on it with bodies around him.

The ball drops to Rhian Brewster but the former England youth international blazes over.

Those that think sacking Dyche is a bad decision are almost certainly not Evertonians and certainly have not had yo watch the dire football we have had to endure under him. Unwilling to give youngsters or flare players a chance and devoid of any attacking tactics or ambition. Absolutely the correct decision as we was taking us nowhere other than relegation.

An incredible turn of events here at Goodison Park, with Everton taking the decision to sack manager Sean Dyche just a matter of hours before their FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough.

I was walking on the way to the ground when my phone started pinging with messages, before confirmation from the club arrived at 16:32 BST saying Dyche has been "relieved of his duties".

It is the first major decision new owners The Friedkin Group have made since taking over last month and undoubtedly a ruthless one.

But the team have stagnated on the pitch, sitting just a point above the relegation zone, with the goals drying up and fan sentiment wearing way on the ex-Burnley boss.

His exploits with the Toffees, keeping them up in the Premier League for the last two seasons under the most difficult of circumstances, were not enough for him to keep his job.

I wrote a piece just yesterday asking whether Dyche was running out of time - the answer was yes.

Now the big question is who comes in and whether he can drag the side up the table and away from danger.

I've been critical of Sheffield United's start here but it should be pointed out how many injuries they have right now.

Things might be about to get worse because striker Ryan One is giving it a go after treatment from the physio.

I think it's a major red flag for this ownership.

I think Evertonians over this past decade have had a maverick owner who made decisions on a whim, who ignored advice, didn't really think about the short-term plan or the long-term plan. And by the end of it, the fans were desperate to get him out.

You've got this new group coming in, there's all this positivity. Fans are saying they're going to get their club back and then they have a decision like this. Whether it's the right or wrong decision, it's three hours before kick-off in an FA Cup game. It's a man who has saved you from relegation the last two years - one with a points deduction, yet somehow managed to keep them up and this is how you treat him.

For me, right or wrong decision, it's major, major red flags long-term for this new ownership group.

Sean Dyche is a manager who has made his name from survival in the Premier League.

Cardiff manager Omer Riza has identified a lack of goals and pace as two of the main issues he wants to address during this transfer window.

In Cian Ashford, it looks like the Bluebirds might have unearthed a player who could go some way to improving those shortcomings.

This is only the eighth senior start of the 20-year-old's career but he's shown considerable promise in recent weeks - and he took his goal beautifully.

It helps Ashford's cause that he's an academy product. "He's one of our own," the Cardiff fans sang at Bramall Lane after the forward's goal.

  10. Last FA Cup tie at Goodison?published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Everton v Peterborough (19:45 GMT)

    Shamoon Hafez
BBC Sport football news reporter at Goodison Park

I was hoping for a straightforward day when waking up in -6C conditions this morning - a clean cut game and off we go home.

Instead, we've had the bombshell news of Sean Dyche's sacking before kick-off and now the prospect off sitting in freezing conditions watching an FA Cup tie going to extra-time and/or penalties.

Not what we need and it'll be the early hours of Friday morning before I get back into bed.

The prospect of a 'cupset' is on the cards and a Peterborough win will means it's the last ever FA Cup tie to be played at this famous old venue, before the club move to their new home next season.

Cardiff's Perry Ng, playing in central midfield today, is caught in possession in his own box.

  12. Fulham 'should get through this tie'published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Fulham v Watford (19:45 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    BBC football expert

Fulham boss Marco Silva left Watford under a bit of a cloud in 2018, so it will be interesting to see what sort of reception he gets from their travelling fans.

Watford had been going pretty well under Tom Cleverley but three successive defeats have halted their progress a bit.

Fulham have had a great season so far, and they have a lovely balance about the way they play.

It would be great for them to have a cup run to go with their impressive league form, and hopefully Silva will be thinking that they should have a real go at the FA Cup, because they can beat anyone on their day.

As long as they go full strength, or close enough to it, they should get through this tie. That's my thinking for most Premier League sides facing lower league sides in the third round, but of course that is not always the case.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-1

  13. Will Everton avoid a Cup upset?published at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

    Everton v Peterborough (19:45 GMT)

The last time Everton were knocked out of the FA Cup by League One opposition was in the 2007-08 campaign.

Oldham Athletic travelled to Goodison Park and thanks to a 25-yard from Gary McDonald they managed to beat David Moyes' side 1-0.

You can't say that's not deserved.

20-year-old Cian Ashford closes down and then steals the ball from Rhys Norrington-Davies, putting him through on goal as Sheffield United attempted to play out from the back.

Ashford is cool as you like as the keeper rushes out too, slotting home to give Cardiff the lead.

The crowd at Bramall Lane is sparse at best.

The wintery weather in Yorkshire will have something to do with that. It's forecast to drop to -6 tonight.

The home fans are briefly roused by a driving run down the left by Andre Brooks.

The players have enough experience and quality to come through the tie.

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman will pick the team up and get a result.

What a mess. Everton never fail to amaze in some of their crazy decisions. Perhaps Sean Dyche needed to be replaced. But now? He's overseen the 'Great Escape' and probably would have done it again. Who would truly WANT to manage Everton? Mourinho, if he or the board are desperate. His best days, I believe, are gone. Relegation now is a real possibility. Then, down to League One?

No wonder the Cardiff striker has looked rusty in missing those two big early chances.

An encouraging start for the visitors overall, though.
