I am conscious of the warning, still ringing in my ears, from Ben not to overhype this young man.

We can, of course, trust our readers to keep Rio's feet on the ground.

    Cue Gordon from Salford...

The trust that Szoboszlai shows in dummying the ball to allow a 16-year-old boy to take the shot shows how highly rated Rio is by the Liverpool squad. What a finish!

None of this comes as a surprise to Liverpool manager Arne Slot, of course.

The Dutchman says he has seen Rio Ngumoha score many times from these kind of positions, but was happy to describe last night's winning goal a special moment for both the youngster and the club as a whole.

Ngumoha's 100th-minute strike was his first ever Premier League goal and likely one of the more dramatic he will ever score in his career.

You can hear what Slot said about that and much more in the audio clip below.

Just for the record, Rio Ngumoha's 17th birthday is on Friday, when he will legally be allowed to start learning how to drive.

It's still another year before he will be able to toast his success with a glass of bubbly, but there is no time for that tomfoolery, anyway.

Liverpool's next game is at home to Arsenal on Sunday.

I think you could say young Rio is living the dream...

    Liverpool

How does it feel to score a match-winning goal in the Premier League just a few days shy of your 17th birthday?

Rio Ngumoha has described the "sensational moment", speaking to Liverpool's club website: "I’m buzzing! I’m so happy to score, especially the winner. A good moment, a special feeling, I’m definitely happy.

“Normally, last season especially, the academy coaches and even the first-team coaches are always saying, ‘Make the back post, make the back post.’

“The fact that I made the back post is just crazy… when I saw it with Mo [Salah] and then Dom [Szoboszlai] putting it through his legs, I was like one-v-one and I just smashed it.

“The fans, I heard them screaming my name and that’s a sensational moment I would say.

“But you can’t get too carried away with all the noise, like I said, because at the end of the day I probably do that finish 100 times on the training ground so it’s no different with the fans [here]. But obviously the fans backing you there, it’s just crazy.

“I’m 16 but I don’t want my age to show that I can’t play with the older players. I want to prove a point that I can play with not just people my age but many ages above.

“But like I said, there are people at the club who are always helping me and I’m always learning and improving, so I can’t complain.”

Is there anything better than a young player announcing their arrival on the biggest stage?

As a neutral, it is easy to get carried away by these moments. They just seem to stick with you.

Think Wayne Rooney scoring for Everton against Arsenal.

In fact, Rooney is one of only three players younger than Rio Ngumoha - by one day to be precise - to have scored a goal in the Premier League...

    Oh my goodness!

The Liverpool players are running up the touchline because 'big' Rio has introduced himself to the Liverpool faithful.

What a beautiful strike of the ball. It was worked down the right-hand side, played across the middle, a little dummy, and it fell to him at the back post. No Newcastle player around him.

He caressed it and curled it into the far post, no chance for Nick Pope.

What an end to this game!

Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James, who played in some blockbuster games for the Reds against Newcastle in the 1990s [more on that later], has been on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast to discuss last night's latest instalment served up by the two sides.

Before that, they played last night's 5 Live commentary from Eilidh Barbour, describing the moment Rio Ngumoha "introduced himself to the Liverpool faithful"...

I don't understand apologies after the fact from footballers. I don't need to hear that Anthony Gordon is sorry. He doesn't need to be sorry. Things happen, and we move on the to the next game. It's a recent trend which we can do without. Apologies to VVD in private.

  14. Gordon available for Champions League openerpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

It is important to note that Anthony Gordon will be available to play for Newcastle in their opening Champions League fixture, which is scheduled for the week commencing 15 September.

His three-game ban following Monday's straight red card against Liverpool only relates to domestic matches, not European games.

Remember, the Champions League draw will take place on Thursday from 17:00 BST, when Newcastle, along with fellow English sides Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham, will find out their eight games in the opening league phase.

Rangers and Celtic could also be in the draw, if they make it through their qualifying play-off ties this week.

We will, of course, bring you live text coverage of Thursday's draw from Monaco.

    Newcastle United

Anthony Gordon had been played out of position as a makeshift striker/false nine in Newcastle United's opening two Premier League matches.

Eddie Howe has played the England forward up front before, but Gordon's preferred role is out wide in an attacking front three.

The 24-year-old will now be missing for Newcastle's next three games, following his straight red card in Monday's 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool.

Hooper was consistent in being lenient throughout the game. Lots of things both sides could have been yellows, even the red he originally gave as yellow. Correctly overruled by VAR when needed - all the officials did their job and it enabled such an entertaining game.

  17. 'My intentions were pure' - Gordon apologises for red cardpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Anthony Gordon, who will now be suspended for the Magpies' next three matches, has posted an apology to his Newcastle team-mates and fans on his Instagram, external story.

The England forward also apologised directly to Virgil van Dijk, who had clear stud marks visible down his calf as a result of the challenge.

The message read: "I want to sincerely apologise to my team-mates and the fans. My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and I mistimed the tackle.

"I also want to apologise to Virgil. I would never intend to tackle somebody like this on purpose. We spoke after and he knows that.

"More importantly, I'm so proud of the time I spent on the pitch and how we played. The atmosphere from you all is what makes St James' Park so special.

"I love everything we stand for as a club and no more than right now. I'll be back and better, the same as every other setback I've ever faced. See you soon."

Dan Burn should have been sent off for 2 tackles in the space of 30 seconds on Salah. Newcastle were incredibly lucky that the ref apparently didn't actually want to punish any of their players! Bruno should have absolutely been shown a second yellow as well.

Is everyone going to ignore the two yellow card fouls in the space of 10 seconds from Dan Burn on Salah? Newcastle United to win of there was a PL Wrestlemania!
