Don’t understand the narrative of Liverpool not playing well. Newcastle didn’t play football, just punted the ball up and used throw ins and corners and free kicks. Liverpool did very well to defend them all but statistically, some were bound to come through.

    A, Liverpool

Long ball tactics from Newcastle, who just tried to kick Liverpool off the pitch, Liverpool could not handle the fight, they were shocking, the only decent bit of actual football was the final goal, not the beautiful game last night.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC MOTD: "I think it was a great performance from the players, both first and second half in very different ways.

"First half we thought we dominated the game. We were in a great place with just the goal missing. Second half we had a mountain to climb at 2-0 down with 10 men but I thought we controlled the game. I thought we were really good and fought our way back unbelievably well but couldn't get over the line to get a point.

"I think it's tough to play against 11 men, especially against a team with the quality of Liverpool. The first goal was key, it gave us belief, it got us back into the match and we always felt if the margin was one we'd be able to get something from the match."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his side stayed "mentally strong" in an "amazing atmosphere" at St James' Park on Monday night.

The Reds scored a 100th-minute winner after being pegged back from two goals up against 10-man Newcastle in what was a raucous atmosphere inside the home of the Magpies.

You can hear what Slot had to say in full below.

Liverpool were dreadful last night. Second to every tackle, no desire and no passion, with Wirtz looking lost throughout the whole match. It's going to take time to embed new players and involve Wirtz better but it needs to happen soon as we've been off the boil since about March.

LFC have played badly, deserved 0 points but have 6. Lots of room for improvement. Ekitike the one bright spark. He's started really well. Rio's first goal will do him the world of good too.

A fantastic game, for the neutral, with the outcome not decided until late into injury time. Premier League football at its most exciting!

Newcastle United and Liverpool produced a night of drama on Tyneside that contained every classic element that makes theirs the Premier League's new bitter rivalry.

The purported villain of the piece, Newcastle's rebel striker Alexander Isak, was not even at St James' Park for an adrenaline-fuelled episode between the club that wants to keep him and the Premier League champions who want to add his name to their star-studded attacking cast list.

Who knows what Isak would have made of a game that was low on quality but packed with just about everything else, and settled in the 100th minute by Rio Ngumoha, who became the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool's history at 16 years and 361 days.

It was a sensational evening, not fashioned from classic football, but by the emotions charged by what is now assuming all the contents for a classic, long-running feud.

It sits along some vintage encounters between the two teams, not least the two memorable Liverpool 4-3 wins back in 1996 and 1997. The rivalry is well and truly back.

Liverpool's 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha made history as the youngest scorer in the club's history when he struck with virtually the last kick of a breathless encounter to snatch victory against Newcastle United at a stunned St James' Park.

Eddie Howe's men had mounted a frantic early surge on Liverpool's goal but were hit by a sucker punch 10 minutes before the break when Ryan Gravenberch's low shot beat Nick Pope, helped by a slight deflection off Fabian Schar.

Liverpool stunned the hosts again by doubling their advantage within 30 seconds of the restart when Hugo Ekitike, the striker who snubbed the Magpies to move to Anfield instead, scored with a low, placed right-foot finish.

But, despite being a man down, Newcastle rallied and captain Bruno Guimaraes gave them hope with a diving header at the far post after 57 minutes.

With Liverpool losing their composure under pressure, substitute William Osula got in ahead of Gravenberch to bundle in the equaliser past Alisson after 88 minutes.

Liverpool looked to have thrown away a victory that looked certain in the early moments of the second half - until substitute Ngumoha, at 16 years and 361 days, provided a sensational climax when left unmarked to fire home in the 10th of 11 added minutes.

Hello, happy Monday-ish Tuesday. The one after the Bank Holiday.

Hopefully we can get you through today relatively unscathed.

I hear there was a game of football last night? Relatively boring with absolutely no drama, right?

Best get into that analysis, then.
