Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC MOTD about Anthony Gordon's red card: "I've only seen it once back and it was very quick as the game was going on. I think Anthony was going in full blooded into the challenge and he's tried to pull out and slipped and his momentums taken him in. It didn't look good but I don't think there was any intent."

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer wasn't best pleased with Anthony Gordon's lunging tackle that saw him sent off on Monday evening.

On his X account, he wrote: "What a stupid challenge man. It’s a red card all day."

There were also a few of those red faced emojis shouting expletives included, for those interested.

I don’t think he intended to hurt Virgil van Dijk but all day long, even in real time, it look like a naughty challenge and deserved a red card.

If he keeps his head there and they go into the second half downhill with equal men then you would think they [Newcastle] would get back in the game and go on and win it.

For the players on the field, they did superb, it was admirable, but they didn’t and it is still three points lost.

"It's happened to me. We always try to give our best. There is a lot of noise outside that we cannot control."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says that England forward Anthony Gordon went in "full-blooded" but there was no "intent" when he was sent off for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk in their 3-2 loss to Liverpool at St James' Park.

The sending off meant Newcastle had to play a large portion of the game with 10 men against last year's Premier League winners.

There have been 17 red cards in Premier League games between Newcastle and Liverpool, with only Everton v Liverpool (25) and Liverpool v Man Utd (18) seeing more.

I think what we have seen tonight is probably one of the worst performances from a winning team, and one of the best from the losing team.

Liverpool won't care right now, they'll be absolutely ecstatic [with the win] but Eddie Howe's men tonight were absolutely outstanding.

I actually fear what the score would have been if it was 11 v 11. To put in that performance with 10 men, I think Liverpool would have won the game, they were far better in every aspect.

Newcastle had just suffered a painful defeat right at the death - only you would not have known it. Not by the standing ovation the Geordies afforded their exhausted side at full-time.

Newcastle had run the champions mighty close - and the home support recognised that.

After going 2-0 down and with Gordon dismissed, it had previously felt a long way back for the 10 men. The away end even felt emboldened enough to chant about Isak as they asked Newcastle to "hand him over".

Yet the spirited hosts rallied.

Guimaraes' header reignited the stadium as the captain waved his arms up and down and whipped up the fans after pulling a goal back.

Suddenly it felt like Newcastle were playing with a man advantage at a raucous St James' Park as they swarmed Liverpool and made them retreat.

It has got to the stage where Gordon, a winger by trade, has been picked ahead of the Dane in attack. Yet Osula thought he had snatched a point for his side - only for Ngumoha to score a last-gasp winner.

It was a hammer blow for Newcastle, who will somehow have to regroup and lift themselves for a trip to Leeds United on Saturday - and Howe needs a breakthrough in his search for a striker.

The manager is more important than [Alexander] Isak. What he [Eddie Howe] has done at that football club, he is a special, special manager and I'm not just talking about for Newcastle but in the Premier League.

The job he has done from where they were to where they are now, I'm not saying they are going to lose their manager but if we're talking about either the player or manager going, he is way more important than Isak.

It was just a few months ago that Alexander Isak wrote himself into club folklore by scoring against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final to help end the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

Yet it was Liverpool's fans who were singing about Isak this time around as the away end repeatedly urged Newcastle to "hand him over".

Isak was conspicuous by his absence once again, as the wantaway Swede - for whom Liverpool have had a £110m offer rejected - continues to train away from the rest of his Newcastle team-mates. Inevitably, this saga added a new dimension to the game.

It certainly did not feel like an early season fixture, as a result.

The Liverpool players were booed getting off the team bus. By the time the visitors made it out to inspect the pitch, there were Newcastle fans gathered to jeer them some more. When the champions' line-up was read out by the stadium announcer, a few minutes before kick-off, the cacophony of boos was deafening.

The passion of the home support was matched by the intensity Newcastle played with. Liverpool, tellingly, conceded seven fouls in the opening 20 minutes alone as they aggressively tried to keep the hosts back.

"We all know it's a difficult place to come. We know there was a lot of oil on the fire this week to get Newcastle fired up. What happened tonight was expected and, for us, the disappointing part was that we conceded two set pieces. That shouldn't happen but overall great three points, move on and focus on the next one.

"Free-kick, corner kicks the pressure gets on. They had the quality. If you look at the traditional top six here last season there was only a couple that beat them It's always a difficult place to come.

"I enjoy these type of atmospheres, so I was really looking forward to it but we could've made it easier if we don't give them those set pieces, then you give them the boost and the feeling and the drive with the fans behind them but we managed to get the three points and move on."

So many times they [Liverpool] were not patient enough on the ball.

Every time they put the ball down, and tried to make three or four passes on the right or left hand side they opened up Newcastle but they didn't do it very often.

I don't know why. They got bullied at times but I think Liverpool got away with one tonight but that's how it is sometimes.

Like the other day when Arsenal won at Man Utd, it's the same thing. They managed to find a way to win.
