We all know Ange Postecoglou is highly passionate and rattled at the moment. He is under pressure.

The Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool will be so enormous for him.

There's the great debate whether he should adapt because he's got lesser players in the Spurs squad. I understand that debate and I agree that if you're playing Archie Gray and Djed Spence in defence, then there's nothing wrong in giving them a bit of protection.

But Postecoglou is a stickler for playing that way and he believes that's for the betterment of team further down the line.

A large element of Tottenham fans are still with him because of how depleted the team are and believe he can turn it around. But the next few games will be so, so big for him.

Thanks Martin, I think you make a really great point.

And I think it counts for goalscorers too. Peak Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi changed expectations what with their consistent 40-goal seasons.

Nowadays if a striker scores less than 20 league goals in a season there's almost a negative discourse around their form.

    And there really shouldn't be.

Nineteen goals in 38 games is an exceptional record people!

Everything is overreaction these days, City, Liverpool and latterly Arsenal have distorted what is normal with these long unbeaten runs, especially when the league is a lot deeper with all these good squads you see. So hopefully we are seeing more of a return to what's normal, losing 5 games or drawing 12 (Invincibles) still win you the league. Arsenal draw at Brighton and Liverpool drawing with United was a decent away point in previous to City's domination world. Everyone needs to shift their expectations, including on players, form will go up and down, anyone who has ever played at any level understands that, we all had that unexplainable shocker.

Tottenham might still be in all cup competitions, but they are still not beating teams they are expected to in the league.

They beat Southampton 5-0 and then lose pretty comfortably in the next. They are still that kind of team that blow you to bits one week and then shoot themselves in the foot.

Ange Postecoglou looks like he is constantly angry at the moment. It looks like things are getting on top of him. He's gone from that guy you would love to go for a pint with when he first came in and enjoy a bit of company to someone like Chris Sutton.

  5. Postecoglou press conference coming uppublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will likely be asked about Son Heung-min is his press conference at 13:30 GMT.

Don't worry, we'll be all over that as it happens.

We've also heard from Liverpool manager Arne Slot who did not discuss updates on Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander Arnold's contract situations.

Liverpool are playing Tottenham in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

Tottenham triggered a one-year extension in captain Son Heung-min's contract today.

Thanks for getting in touch Mike!

So, what are we talking about today?

Well, we spent a good chunk of this morning asking you whether Nottingham Forest were title contenders, there's still a poll at the top of this page to take part in.

We've also chatted about West Ham, with manager Julien Lopetegui seemingly on the ropes.

Son has never received the plaudits he should have for his time at Spurs, great player, great teammate, humble character and even in the year he was top scorer he had to share the award with Salah who had scored half his goals as penalties when Son didn’t score a single penalty. Genuinely a great player and humble ambassador for Asian footballers.

There is a point at which Ange Postecoglou will get the players back. The cavalry might not arrive all at once, but if results do not turn then and they remain patchy, that is when he will be under genuine pressure.

Having said that, they are a decent bet for a cup win. They are in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup against a Liverpool side, who have played eight games in 25 days. They are also contenders for the Europa League while the FA Cup has not started yet in earnest for the bigger clubs.

So, he's still in it and they can win a cup, but they need their senior players back.

  10. Goalkeeping change for Spurspublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

Tottenham are in the midst of an injury crisis, and the goalkeeping department has not been spared.

First choice Guglielmo Vicario is out for the foreseeable future with an ankle injury, forcing Ange Postecoglou to use Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin as deputies.

On Sunday, Spurs completed the signing of Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague in a deal worth about £12.5m. After receiving a work permit, he could make his debut against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Here's a bit more information on Spurs' new shot-stopper.

Great that Son Heung-min is staying as he is a fantastic figure to have but I'm disappointed Spurs have not rewarded him for the loyalty he has given the club. Another sign of the club not reading the room and taking the cheapest approach.

  12. 'West Ham fans didn't realise how good they had it'published at 11:51 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

FT: Man City 4-1 West Ham

    Leon Osman
Former Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

West Ham fans didn't realise how good they had it.

Being in European football five of the seven seasons, winning a European competition, competing at the top half of the Premier League rather than the bottom, and then getting rid of a manager who was bringing in all that because he wasn't playing good enough attractive football and maybe conceded a few goals in six months.

Now they will be joining that train of rotating managers where they get on and get off again - just like Everton.

  13. Torino make first offer for Chelsea midfielderpublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Torino have made a bid of around £10m plus add-ons to sign Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei.

However, it remains unclear how Chelsea will react to the offer with sources suggesting that a sizeable sell-on clause could be key in any sale.

Monza and Feyenoord are also understood to be interested with Napoli and Lazio also being linked in recent weeks.

Casadei, 21, has made just six appearances for Chelsea this season and has not played a single minute in the Premier League.

The Italy Under-21 international was not involved in either of the recent match day squads for matches against Ipswich and Crystal Palace.

Chelsea signed Casadei from Inter Milan’s academy in 2022 for a fee worth an initial £12.6m.

Liverpool need to refocus and put in a solid performance at Spurs tomorrow. Trent (and others) had an off day on Sunday. It happens. Move on.

As an unhappy Hammer, I definitely think that it's time for Julen Lopetegui to go. He just wasn't the right fit and it's time for a change. But absolute fair play to the guy for still showing up this morning. If my boss was openly interviewing my replacement behind my back and telling everyone that he's waiting on the new guy to say yes before sacking me, I'd probably not bother turning up. J-Lo has more integrity than I do, I guess.

Very on the fence about getting rid of Julen Lopetegui. If we where run by anyone else, I'd say the manager needs to go. I wouldn't trust this board to run a bath, let alone appoint someone that will take club the forward. Unfortunately the foundations of our club are built on jelly, it needs a complete restructure otherwise we're just treading water.

  17. 'Contract situations can become a problem'published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times, on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think correlation is causation. I would be very surprised if the first Trent Alexander-Arnold heard of Real Madrid's interest in signing him was this week. It would suggest he is not engaging with the world as he should be.

His contract hasn't just become unsigned, it's been dragging on for a while. There is no reason why it would have affected him against Manchester United more than it would have done during the rest of the season.

It just seems convenient to single out that game and say that it was Real Madrid.

But I do agree that it can become a problem for Liverpool, in terms of all three players who are yet to sign a contract.

Arsenal fan here, Trent clearly looks unsettled at Liverpool and we need a right-back given our injuries. I say we test the waters with an offer. What have we got to lose?

  19. 'Trent should come out and say he's leaving'published at 11:31 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Leon Osman
Former Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Trent Alexander-Arnold should come out and say that he is probably going to leave Liverpool in January or at the end of the season - a bit like how Jurgen Klopp did and enjoy the last few months as a Liverpool footballer.

Steven Gerrard missed his window to leave Liverpool and once you miss that opportunity, then you are basically committing yourself to your boyhood club for the rest of your life. You are only leaving for the pinnacle. I think that is what is in front of Alexander-Arnold right now.

I am not saying it's a bad thing but Alexander-Arnold has already won everything and he might be thinking it's now or never.

  20. 'Trent pile-on so over the top, ridiculous and unfair'published at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Trent Alexander-Arnold had a bad game. That's all it was.

He has been brilliant this season. Yet, because of this link now and he's the youngest among the three, it does look like [he's receiving more criticism than Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk].

He has let his contract run down but that's his choice and his right. The likelihood is that he will go to Real Madrid.

I agree that he should come out publicly about it because I don't think Liverpool fans will harbour a grudge against him for that. That's his decision. He has been there a long time and he's won everything.

But the pile-on on the back of one bad performance was so over the top, so ridiculous and so unfair.
