Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "If Mohamed Salah misses a penalty against Real Madrid he's distracted by his 'contract situation'.

"If Trent doesn't play well he's distracted by his 'contract situation'.

"If everybody plays well, nobody is distracted by their 'contract distraction'.

"Nine times out of 10, [results are] down to how well the other team plays."

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Trent Alexander-Arnold: "I've spoken to him and others individually as well which you do after every game. I spoke to him before the game as well and the things we shared I will not say here.

"It wasn't his best game and I showed him where to imporove. But you do this after every game. Sometimes you show them what they did really well. But I do this with everyone.

"There are always things you can improve, but in general they worked really hard. We were unable to get the best result but we still got a result."

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "Maybe I didn't use my words in the right way. I didn't say tomorrow that those who have not played often will play tomorrow. I said lots of thoughts go into my line up.

"Maybe some of those players will play tomorrow. Maybe players who have played a lot will play.

"I think it will benefit every player [not just Trent Alexander-Arnold - to play again tomorrow]. Everybody wants to play. Almost all of them are fit."

  7. 'People always talk about us'published at 11:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "I talk with my players, if there's anything worrying them they share it with me.

"What I have shared with the players is what we have done against Manchester United, and what we are doing well against Manchester United.

"That is what we are focused on. I am not focused on social media posts or what people are saying. If you do that as Liverpool manager you will have no life, because people are always talking about us."

  8. 'We were all disappointed'published at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "I think we were all disappointed [about Sunday's draw with Manchester United] not only Trent Alexander-Arnold, we were all disappointed.

"First of all about the result. Parts of our game we weren't completely happy with. It wasn't only Trent, there were more things we could have done better.

"Trent didn't play his best game, but some others also didn't play their best. If you play 50, 60 games in a season, one of them won't be your best performance. Maybe we should highlight these players are playing so well despite playing two games in a week."

  9. 'Best line up might be ones who don't start a lot'published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "If you look at all the fixtures this season, there's so many things going into a line up. It's going to be a decision made about what is the best line up for tomorrow.

"In my opinion the best line up might be ones who don't start a lot."

Tottenham v Liverpool (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "We expect before we go into the game is that two teams have such a clear identity and playing style. Both teams are trying to force that identity towards the other.

"Large parts of the away game two weeks ago we could show our identity. But they in large parts showed how good they are. Scoring three goals against us is a big compliment."

It's obviously not good planning from Liverpool at all that three of their best players are out of contract this summer.

And it's a compounding situation because they're all related in some way. Mohamed Salah is the highest earner and if you agree a deal with him for X, then Virgil van Dijk might ask for Y and Trent Alexander-Arnold could ask for Z.

I do wonder at what point it'll shift. The emphasis so far has been on the club and why they've let this happen.

Then Salah does an interview where he says they're far apart in valuation. That depends on what numbers he's asking for. If people knew what the numbers Liverpool were offering, they might think it's a perfectly fair offer.

As much as they are loved, nobody wants to see them go and any one of them leaving will be a massive blow for Liverpool, there comes a point where the fan condition kicks in - which is that your first loyalty is to the club and not the players.

    "Schoolboy stuff".

After Sunday's game against Manchester United, Liverpool boss Arne Slot admitted right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was not at his best, while former midfielder turned pundit Roy Keane lamented the defender's display.

Nearly 55% of United's attack came down Liverpool's right according to Opta.

This week, reports surfaced that Real Madrid had approached Liverpool about the 26-year-old, who is also out of contract at the end of the season.

Arne Slot will surely be asked about Mohamed Salah's contract situation.

Last week, Salah said there had been no progress on extending his Liverpool contract - and a breakthrough is "far away".

The Egypt forward has entered the final six months of his deal and can now hold talks with non-English clubs over a free transfer when it expires this summer.

The 32-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017, has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season to help the Reds top the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Asked whether he thought this was his final season at Anfield, he told Sky Sports "So far, yes. It's the last six months."

The key problem with our team towards the end of the Moyes era was a tendency to totally capitulate, conceding five-plus on far too many occasions. All Lopetegui has done is continue that trend and we are currently one of if not the worst out of possession team in the league; our defensive fragility is summed up by our loss against Man City, where we looked competitive for large portions of the game and still shipped four goals. I like Graham Potter and I have much more faith in him shoring up the ship than I ever did with Lopetegui, hopefully he can work his magic and get a tune out of our clearly talented squad!

There is incredible talent in the West Ham squad. They remind me a little bit of Wolves in a way.

They have individual players with incredible talent.

The likes of Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta. Mohammed Kudus on his day is frightening.

If you are losing by three goals six times this season already, there is something missing - a togetherness or a cohesion within the team.

Brighton’s famous recruitment algorithm seems to have a bias for wide men. Not always successfully. So I think it’s time to give Hot Chocolate’s Everyone’s a Winger a spin.

West Ham appointed David Moyes as an emergency and got rid of him, wrongly. Then they had to go back to him again and ended up sticking with him.

But that was all to do with Moyes' managerial excellence and nothing to do with West Ham being smart. They just found themselves in a pickle and Moyes got them out of it.

West Ham and Everton, who are the other team interested in Graham Potter if they decide to move on from Sean Dyche, make it look impossibly difficult to appoint good managers.

There doesn't appear to be any internal reflection on the fact that they keep finding themselves in this position and must do things differently.

They need to look at Bournemouth. They have got a recruitment department that knows what they are doing and a manger, who plays a specific style with a clear identity. They make it all look fairly simple.

What an absolute farce. If I was Lopetegui, I'd walk out of Rush Green right now. Disgraceful treatment of a current manager regardless of how he is performing.
