I think the problem for a lot of Hammers fans is that even if Lopetegui finds some good form, we don’t see him ever bringing the squad to a good point in the long-term. Why, then, not just sack him now?

Until we get an official announcement, Julen Lopetegui remains West Ham manager. But his hold on the job is thanks to the slimmest of threads.

There has been uncertainty about Lopetegui's suitability as David Moyes' replacement at the London Stadium since day one but the alarm bells really started ringing after the 3-1 defeat at Leicester on 3 December.

If West Ham had lost the game that followed against Wolves, Lopetegui would have been out. The same is probably true of the match that followed at Bournemouth.

But they didn't. West Ham beat Wolves and would have won at Bournemouth but for an injury-time equaliser.

It was the start of a four-game unbeaten run but the feeling persisted Lopetegui only needed one more bad result to push him to the brink.

That came with a 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool. West Ham were decent at Manchester City at the weekend, but they still lost.

I don't feel the club ownership has any faith in the former Real Madrid and Spain coach.

Lopetegui was never the right man from day one. Not a single fan wanted him. Potter is a safe option and given time he will do a decent job. Many players will thrive under his management.

Should West Ham sack Julen Lopetegui after 20 Premier League games in charge, or does the Spaniard deserve more time?

Hammers, if you think the former, let us know who you want to replace Lopetegui.

  5. Time up for Lopetegui?published at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January

Man City 4-1 West Ham United

Things aren't going too well for Julen Lopetegui at West Ham.

The Spanish coach saw his side lose 4-1 to Manchester City on Saturday, a week after they shipped five goals at home to Liverpool.

The Hammers are 14th in the table with 23 points, seven points above the relegation zone.

Club bosses are weighing up whether to sack Lopetegui and have sounded out Graham Potter as a potential replacement.

So, West Ham fans: Is Lopetegui's time up?

I think Forest fans should brace themselves for an unfamiliar popularity and wider support base this season. They represent the hopes and dreams of all fans of clubs outside the ‘big teams’ this season, as Leicester once did. There’s plenty of romantics left too and I’ll be quietly cheering them on.

Nottingham Forest last appeared in Europe during the 1995-96 season, and, of course, enjoyed successive European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980.

Forest are third in the table with 40 points, behind Arsenal only on goal difference.

Before the start of this season, 70 teams won 40-plus points from their first 20 games of a Premier League season; just four of them failed to finish the campaign inside the top four.

They were Blackburn Rovers in 1997-98 (6th), Arsenal in 2016-17, Chelsea in 2017-18 and Leicester in 2019-20 (all 5th).

Former Nottingham Forest manager Martin O'Neil on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It’s it ironic that they played on Monday, exactly 50 years from the day that Brian Clough arrived at the City Ground.

"It has been a wonderful story for the club this season. The manager is doing exceptionally well and last night it just rolled on. Another victory makes it six on the trot."

Seeing Nuno do such a great job at Forest, does it suggest that Tottenham's issue are much deeper than coaching and any manager at Spurs is doomed before they start?

    FT: Wolves 0-3 Nottingham Forest

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Nottingham Forest manager Martin O'Neil thinks it's "impossible" for Nottingham Forest's players not to being thinking about the league table.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live he said: "I am going to have to disagree with him [Nuno Espirito Santo].You've got to look at the table but what I think he's saying is look, calm things down because there is a lot of excitement at the City Ground now at the moment obviously with the wins.

"Some of the clubs that you're expecting to be near the top four like Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are really struggling at the minute so I suppose European football, is definitely on the cards and Champions League football is a possibility.

"I know that it sounds strange to say this but when you can get 40 points from 20 games and you're averaging two points per game that is definitely Champions League form."

Forest fan - I’m still checking how many points clear of relegation we are! To be 6th favourite for the title is insane. I’d take those odds of relegation! We aren’t going to be in a title fight, I’m just proud that we’re even in the conversation. It will likely fall off at some point, so any European football would be a huge bonus. Either way, even if we finish 8th, 10th, 12th, it’s been a season to be proud of.

    Brian, mighty red fan!

You know who else had 40 points after 20 games? Leicester City in 2015-16, and we all know how that ended.

"Forest's acid test is Liverpool next Tuesday." We've been hearing this all season. We've already beaten them. Only team to win at Brentford, too. Drew at Chelsea and Brighton with ten men. Recently dispatched Man U, Villa, and Spurs. But still people doubt us. As a great man once said, "You never know John, YOU, and your profession, just might recognise that we are a good side!"
