Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to TNT Sports: "My expectation was more or less tough like the match was. We were ready to compete. The test we had today was a fantastic test. They had chances in the first half, their goalkeeper was fantastic. Second half we changed a little bit and dominated more. We were getting confidence and it was a fantastic win. I am so proud of how the players responded on the field."

On late goalkeeper change: "We had to be ready. We are trying to work tactically individually and try to focus everyone. The goalkeeper [Marco Bizot] was fantastic, he is a very good guy and goalkeeper and he is accepting his role.

"When we had six players out like we did today the other players responded fantastically. It was fantastic how the goalkeeper replaced Martinez."

On Emi Buendia: "He knows how we are building the team and how we are building tactically. His position is clear. He has capacity to assist and score goals."

On John McGinn: "His challenge as captain as well is something more than tactically and individually. He is playing with a lot of emotions. He respond in a difficult moment. He is a player very important in the dressing room and he is always happy and always smiling, when we need more than tactical and individual performances he is always trying to get positive energy."

  3. 'Postecoglou has to stay positive'published at 22:36 BST 2 October

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Midtjylland

    Martin O'Neill
Former Nottingham Forest manager and player on TNT Sports

Ange Postecoglou has to stay positive. That is difficult at this minute. It is a tough fixture up there [Newcastle] for him. They have got to show more desire, particular the set-pieces. They have to be vigilant.

Villa's fortunes changed when Emery remembered that Buendia is a much better player than Elliott. Since he's been preferred, they've looked excellent.

    Feyenoord

Feyenoord manager Robin van Persie, speaking to TNT Sports, said: "We performed really well in terms of our high defending, we won so many balls and in possession. It's a strange feeling to be standing here with a 2-0 loss because in my opinion we earned more.

"We showed a lot of courage, I have a really positive feeling. I didn't have that after our game in Braga, we didn't perform well, but tonight we did."

On the referee's decision to not give Feyenoord a first-half goal, he added: "I don't think it was the right call. The referee was talking about a block, and that someone for Villa was blocked, but that was not the case. It was a clear goal and that's a really important decision.

"The referee said sorry to me. I went to see him at half-time, he thought someone was blocking but said sorry a couple of times. It was a shame and had a big influence on the game."

The manager mentioned about a lack of desire in those particular incidents and that is major. Set-pieces are very important. It is defensively poor.

I’ll never understand the likes of Ange or Amorim… Yes. You stumbled on a formula that worked for you in Portugal or Scotland (maybe Ange made it work in a couple of places). One size rarely fits all. Adapt to survive, or tank it all and start from scratch, again.

I feel like Ange Postecoglou will get extra time, as he was appointed by the owner.

He will get him extra time to get his philosophy going and get Forest firing.

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports: "Really disappointing. Just really, really poor goals we conceded in the first half.

"Allowed the opposition to get comfortable in the game.

"Story of our last few games – key moments let us down.

"We just let ourselves down in key moments of the game. Nothing organisational just in those moments we have not shown the same desire and determination to the opposition."

On Murillo's injury being a factor in Midtjylland's opening goal: "No."

    On Murillo's injury: "I'm not sure. I haven't seen."

On a possible Forest penalty in the first half: "That would disguise my disappointment with the way we dealt with the key moments. We allow refereeing decisions to dictate the outcome, it shouldn't even come to that. We should have handled the situation better."

On regressing: "I don't know. Progress is us winning games of football and we haven't done that.

"Football has been compelling at times, but you have got to keep winning games of football and that's what we will keep trying to do."

On the Forest fans, singing, 'you're getting sacked in the morning': "I heard it. They're fans, they want to see their team win, and they're entitled to their opinion.

"Nothing surprises me in football any more."

On the future: "Just got to keep going. There is no hiding in the sport we're in. Got to keep your head up and recover. We have a tough game against Newcastle at the weekend."

On Forest players not being onboard: "I don't think I have seen anything that they're not onboard or trying to implement the stuff we're talking about."

  14. 'A massive victory for Villa'published at 22:19 BST 2 October

    FT: Feyenoord 0-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot, speaking to TNT Sports, said: "It's a massive victory. I've played here in my career many times and I can count the amount on one hand that we have taken a victory. This is a massive victory for Villa so I'm happy."

On replacing Emiliano Martinez, who had been named on the original team sheet: "I think he felt something during the warm-up. The goalkeeper coach said he was going inside so do your thing and go and warm up and just be ready so that's what I did.

"I'm glad and happy that I could help the team, I will give everything I can and just do my job."

On Villa's run of three wins in a row: "It has been difficult in the beginning of the season but we never lost the faith and hope. We still have the spirit, even when it was not that great at the beginning. Now, hopefully, we can keep this up. We are playing better, the team has confidence and we're scoring goals and that's the most important thing."

Ange doesn’t seem to rate Chris Wood, but he had more impact than any other attacking Forest player.

How these managers keep getting jobs (followed by massive payoffs) is beyond me. Ange’s record over the last two seasons in England is appalling. Even the Europa league he won last year was against second rate opposition.

    FT: Feyenoord 0-2 Aston Villa

Feyenoord had 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes of this match, with Aston Villa only facing more in the first half of three games across all competitions under Unai Emery: 15 vs PSG in April, 14 vs Arsenal in April 2024 and 14 vs Chelsea in April 2023.

Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood scored his first major European goal for 13 years and 347 days, since he netted his first for Birmingham against Club Brugge in October 2011.

Only two other players have ever had bigger gaps between their first two goals in Europe – Eugenio Corini between 1990 and 2005 (14 years, 347 days) and Mark Wright between 1982 and 1997 (14 years, 221 days).

Wood did also score for Burnley in Europa League qualifiers in 2018 - but this stat is only for games in the tournament proper.

We really shouldn't have parted company with Nuno. He's the best manager we've had in years. He got us playing in a style that suited the quality and skills of the team. This style Ange is trying to play, simply isn't working. First European campaign in 29 years and we lose to a Danish side.

    Adam, Forest fan in Sheffield

I agree with William at 21:53. Marinakis has brought this problem on himself, he personally didn't like the manager so he sacks him. Poor business practice.
