Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount was involved in the open section of training ahead of tomorrow's Europa League last-16 tie with Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

The £55m signing from Chelsea has endured a second injury-plagued campaign.

He has started just four league games and has not featured since injuring his hamstring against Manchester City on 15 December.

Manuel Ugarte was also involved after missing two games with a 'knock'.

However, defensive pair Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro were both missing.

Realistically, United need to win the Europa League to qualify for European football next season. They drew the away leg in San Sebastian last week and are likely to play French club Lyon if they get through.

What you can't take into account is, I'm sat here watching Donnarumma and thinking 'wow look at the size of him'. How imposing is he in that goal? Where am I going to put this? If he dives the right way he stands a great chance of getting it. The guy's a monster.

But he looks nonchalant, not bothered.

The idea behind that is to stand as slim as you can to start with [as the penalty taker walks from the halfway line]. Then when they put the ball on the spot, now you're putting doubt in their mind, you spread yourself, you make yourself big and awkward, making the goal look smaller.

You don't do that when they're walking forward. You do it when the ball is on the spot to put doubt in their mind in the last seconds.

Salah is nowhere near the Ballon d'Or! There's five players in Real's team and at least five others who are way out in front of him. Players who go out in the last 16 don't win international awards.

"The first game belonged to Alisson, the second game belonged to Donnarumma," said PSG boss Luis Enrique.

It is the life of a goalkeeper.

One day you are the villain. The next, you are the hero.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was blamed by some for Paris St-Germain's defeat by Liverpool last week, allowing Harvey Elliot's 88th-minute effort - the Reds' only shot on target - to slip in.

At the other end, the Italian's opposite number Alisson produced the "performance of his career" as he single-handedly kept the French side at bay in Paris.

On Tuesday night, the tables turned.

Italy's Donnarumma was the hero, saving two of Liverpool's three penalties in a shootout to send his side through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

  6. The rise of PSG's Mendespublished at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

The very first thing Mohamed Salah did on Tuesday night was slip the ball between PSG left-back Nuno Mendes' legs and sprint off down the touchline.

    However....

A massive factor in Salah drawing a blank across the two legs was Mendes' performance.

The 22-year-old Portugal international nicked the ball off Salah on multiple occasions and caused problems going forward.

Signed from Sporting Lisbon in 2022, Mendes spent the 2021-22 season on loan before signing in a deal worth a reported £34m.

The left-back was one of four PSG players named in the Ligue 1 team of the year in his first season and has been a constant under Luis Enrique.

He has 33 caps and has already played in three major tournaments for Portugal.

A rising star who is only getting better.

While we are on the subject of top scorers in the Champions League, Harry Kane created more history last night as he scored his 10th goal in the competition this season to become the first English player to reach that mark in a single season.

The Bayern Munich striker is already in the history books as Tottenham and England's highest scorer. He also has several goal-scoring records in the Bundesliga.

His individual form throughout his career and his longevity has some fans questioning whether Kane gets enough plaudits for this skill and clinical finishing.

Do you think Kane gets enough praise? Let us know by using the thumbs - up for yes, down for no.

We flagged those Champions League scoring stats because former Arsenal and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry has waded into the debate about whether Mohamed Salah deserves to be in the reckoning for this season's Ballon d'Or.

Henry believes Barca's Raphinha, who leads this season's Champions League scoring stats, is ahead of Salah in the Ballon d'Or race.

He told CBS: "He [Raphinha] is up there because of what he is doing in the Champions League. He has 11 goals in the Champions League.

"Mo Salah is a great contender for it, Harry Kane is a contender.

"Raphinha is on a lot of goals with just one penalty. I'm not saying Kane shouldn't have penalty [stats] and Mo Salah is having a season in the Premier League that we will never see again.

"But I'm saying if a guy has the same amount of goals than you guys scored without penalties, it's not bad, it is outstanding, but you have to [speak about Raphinha's skill].

"What he is doing on top of defending, when people talk about being complete, as a striker you have to know how to put pressure on also and press well and Raphinha has it all."

Slot is top drawer, however, Salah was poor in both legs against the Paris St-Germain left-back. He should have moved him into the middle to make Enrique have to re-think.

Chris: Liverpool have not "flattered to deceive", Nabeel. They have beaten all comers domestically and in Europe. The best teams from all over the continent. PSG were the outlier. They have hit form at the right time. If they can be consistent with this performance level they will dominate in Europe as they do at home. Over the two legs, this version of PSG were as good as peak-City, and more aggressive.

Rob: No Nabeel, we cannot agree that. A big part of why Arsenal and Man City aren't doing as well as in previous years is because of the high quality of the league, which Liverpool are walking away with. They have been very unlucky to meet a team as good and as in form as PSG at this stage of the competition and there is no shame losing to such a high quality side. Go back to baiting people on social media please, we don't need it here.

This is just a selection of the responses we have received to Nabeel's post. There are many more...

  12. A record-breaking Liverpool careerpublished at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time

Mohamed Salah stands alone as Liverpool's leading scorer with his 45 goals in the Champions League.

He broke Steven Gerrard's record for the most Champions League goals for Liverpool back in 2020.

In a game against Midtjylland he scored after 55 seconds to go beyond Gerrard's 21 goals in the European competition (Gerrard also scored an additional nine in Champions League qualifying).

Salah is also currently third on the overall top scorers for Liverpool across all competitions with 243 goals overall.

Only Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346) have scored more goals for Liverpool.

  13. Salah's key Champions League contributionpublished at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

Until the club says any different, we have to assume that Liverpool's loss to Paris St-Germain was potentially Mohamed Salah's final Champions League match for the Reds.

Salah is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to renew his deal.

The striker has been a key player across all competitions for Liverpool since he joined in 2017, but especially so in the Champions League, scoring 45 goals in 73 appearances in the top-tier European cup competition.

He also was a central figure in the club's 2018/19 Champions League-winning season.

Can we agree this Liverpool side have flattered to deceive in the Premier League this year? They are ahead because their would be opponents have not been at the races, not because they are an outstanding team. Arsenal and MCFC losing major players is a huge factor. Slot has been lucky to inherit a strong squad. But, the PSG performance showed they fall short against genuinely strong opponents. They played Real Madrid at a time the team was still bedding in.

    Nabeel, London

All opinions are valid here, but in Liverpool's defence we feel it important to stress that they have lost just one of their 29 matches in the Premier League so far this season...

Liverpool's "Egyptian king" Mohamed Salah was in tears after Tuesday's defeat to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

The Reds had been favourites to win the European competition were edged out by the French champions on penalties.

As well as being taken out of the running for one of football's biggest trophies, there is added context for Salah. The match was potentially his final Champions League game for Liverpool.

The Egypt international is out of contract at the end of the season and no renewal has yet been announced. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are in the same position.

No Liverpool fan would tell you that this team is as good as the team that won the league and Champions League in back-to-back seasons. Mane and Firmino were a level above Diaz and Jota/Nunez and it really showed last night. We have to be realistic about where the team is. I’m delighted with the results in the league but its important not to get carried away and let the league table lull the club into a false sense that the squad is perfect and no money needs to be spent. We need more support across the defence and a new centre-forward. I love Darwin but as time goes on it looks increasingly unlikely that there will be a happy ending to his time at the club. Lets cut our losses, find him a club where he can be happy again and recoup some of the transfer fee.
