Liverpool fans...this isn't a dig and is a genuine question, but are you still a fan of the new Champions League format? 120 minutes in the 10th (TENTH) match of the competition (12th for PSG) and it was 'just' to get into the quarter-finals. Far too many games. It's a good job the league is done and dusted, because the Liverpool players looked dead on their feet towards the end. Domestic football will suffer as a result and we may see the first proof of that on Sunday if Liverpool don't turn up in the League Cup final.

Let's see a show of thumbs for Anders' question - are you a fan of the extended Champions League format? Thumbs up for yes, down for no.

  2. Reds keeper joins Neuer with 16 saves in a tiepublished at 09:02 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

Alisson Becker's 16 saves across both legs against Paris St-Germain (excluding penalty shootout saves), stopped the most shots by a goalkeeper in a Champions League knockout tie since Manuel Neuer for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid in the 2016-17 quarter-finals (16).

However, the 32-year-old failed to save any of PSG's four well-taken penalties.

After watching the first 20 to 30 minutes it seemed to be Liverpool were not going to score no matter what they did. From then on there were too many missed passes and lack of tackles. As the game progressed PSG seemed to be able go from one end of the pitch to the other with ease. I have to agree with Slot in his post-match comments, on the night we were the better team, but over the two games PSG were the better. PSG to win the Champions League!!!!

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

    Statman Dave
Football analyst on the Football Daily podcast

On the goalkeeper performances, over the two legs Alisson made a whopping 16 saves preventing expected goals of 3.23 which is ridiculous.

We kept on seeing Donnarumma punch it, eight punches [in the second leg] which is the most of any goalkeeper in the knockout stages so far.

So Liverpool play 10 games in the Champions League, won eight, lost two. That consistency wins leagues titles but doesn’t necessarily win cups. It’s just the way it is. They’re a great team and with a big summer spending could be even better next year. Once the dust settles this will go down as a very special Liverpool season.

  6. A tale of two keeperspublished at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

It's rare in a match of this quality that both goalkeepers should take centre stage, but this really was a tale of two keepers.

Just as Gianluigi Donnarumma claimed the man of the match award for his performance at Anfield, Liverpool's Alisson Becker was the hero in the Reds' smash and grab victory in the first leg.

  7. Donnarumma answers criticspublished at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

Gianluigi Donnarumma the penalty hero - we've seen that before.

The 26-year-old saved penalties from England's Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka at Wembley to help Italy win Euro 2020.

His heroics against Liverpool came after he received criticism for his performance in the first leg from French media.

"I got a lot of criticisms after the first leg from some journalists in France, but they don't even know what it means to be a goalkeeper," Donnarumma told Sky.

"I keep smiling, I keep working hard for PSG. I'm so happy tonight."

Erin: Re Steve 8:23 - neither should get the flak, given the performance of our forwards before either of them came on and Konate was at fault for a silly goal. We wouldn't have scored the goal in Paris but for Darwin and Jones helped us keep the ball better when he came on there too. Maybe we just faced a very good team and lost by fine margins on penalties and we don't have to partake in this online obsession of the blame game.

Both penalties last night were saved by a very good goalkeeper with an outrageously long wingspan. They weren’t ‘missed’ and they weren’t terrible penalties. Fair play to the Amazon Prime pundits for pointing that out last night and I hope the two young lads (and they’re both young) get credit for stepping up to take one, and get the full support and backing of the club and fanbase.

  9. Penalty miss or penalty save?published at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

It is the yin and yang of football - is it right to say that Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missed their penalties? Was it not that Gianluigi Donnarumma saved them?

Maybe the penalty takers gave him a chance with the power and direction of their spot kicks, but if the Italy goalkeeper goes the right way then his six foot four inch frame, not to mention his huge reach, will do the rest.

  10. 'A sense of anxiety' before Nunez penaltypublished at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

You just had that feeling as Darwin Nunez walked up to the ball. A sense of anxiety from the Liverpool fans...there was a sense of 'oh no that is probably not the right option'.

I look at Virgil van Dijk and when he takes a penalty he hits them and it stays hit, it is just incredible.

But to be honest with you, I am not going to say anything about anyone who takes a penalty. I hated taking penalties. All credit to them.

It is that confidence when you are walking up. I look at Curtis Jones, he wasn't at his best in the game, but Curtis is a very confident boy and he felt he could take that penalty. I tip my hat to people who do that.

So, does Curtis Jones get the same flak Nunez will, or is it different because he’s a local boy. There were a number of players who didn’t affect the game, Liverpool were second best on the night.

Darwin Nunez fell into the arms of Arne Slot at the conclusion of a dramatic night that may yet come to define the spectacularly mixed bag that has been the Uruguayan's Liverpool career.

Nunez must not shoulder the blame for Liverpool's exit on penalties at the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Liverpool's support, as they always have, stood firmly behind Nunez but he suffered a nightmare with an undistinguished performance as a substitute before missing a penalty in the shootout.

Nunez may not even have been called upon to take a penalty had Liverpool not lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury and replaced the reliable spot-kick taker Alexis Mac Allister on a physically and mentally draining, emotional night.

Andy: Re Barry 07:19 - As a Liverpool fan, good luck, but the PSG of the earlier group stage and the knockout stage are two rather different prospects.

  14. Fate and fine margins play their partpublished at 08:16 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

Despite that quirk of fate that set up Liverpool's last-16 tie against an in-form Paris St-Germain side, the outcome ultimately came down to a penalty shootout.

It just so happens that Gianluigi Donnarumma is pretty good a saving penalties.

After Mohammed Salah scored Liverpool's first, the Italy goalkeeper then stepped up to save from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, to set up Desire Doue with the chance to hammer home PSG's winning spot kick in a 4-1 shootout victory.

Fine margins, as well as fate, played their part to send league phase table-toppers Liverpool out and an improving PSG through.

But could Arne Slot have done things differently?

Was he right to rest players for that final group phase game? And do you agree with his choice of penalty takers?

Liverpool's failure to beat PSV in the group stages ultimately cost them dearly and meant they unluckily drew PSG who themselves had underperformed in the group stages. The biggest irony of course is that Arsenal have beaten both PSG and PSV in this competition! I'm sure they would happily swap places!!

    Joe, Gloucester

I heard about this yesterday. PSV's win over Liverpool in the final league phase game meant they moved above PSG in the table, pushing PSG towards an eventual last-16 clash with the Reds.

  16. Liverpool exit at hands of PSG 'will hurt deeply'published at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

    Phil McNulty

Liverpool players slumped to the turf in disappointment as the fates and fortunes of the Champions League were illustrated in this thrilling last-16 tie that provoked all the emotions on a classic European night at Anfield.

Arne Slot's side have barely broken stride as they topped the Champions League table and raced 15 points clear in the Premier League - but this is the biggest setback Liverpool and their Dutch coach have suffered this season.

Anfield provided its usual thunderous atmosphere but Liverpool could not quite deliver, looking leggy and second best in the added 30 minutes.

Liverpool will need to recover swiftly, with the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday, but this was a defeat that will hurt deeply as they would have had Champions League expectations far beyond the last 16.

  17. 'The best game of football I was ever involved in'published at 07:55 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 0-1 PSG (agg 1-1, 1-4 pens)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was the best game of football I have ever been involved in.

"It was an incredible performance, especially if you compare it with last week. Maybe we ran out of luck because the margins were so small.

"We played the perfect game, except for scoring a goal. It was similar to Paris last week, when they played the perfect game and didn't score. And then in extra time, they were maybe a little bit better."

PSG were better than Liverpool in both legs, they thoroughly deserved the win. Even at Anfield they had more possession and more shots than Liverpool. Alisson had the game of his life in the first match, 5-0 to PSG wouldn't have been unfair.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona were the first side to book their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille, after seeing off Benfica in Tuesday's early game.

Teenager Lamine Yamal was once again the star of the show, with the 17-year-old providing a brilliant assist for Raphinha to open the scoring before topping that with a stunning strike to put Barca 2-1 ahead on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

Nicolas Otamendi's excellent header had cancelled out Raphinha's opener but Benfica's hopes were ended by Yamal's brilliance, before Raphinha struck again with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

While Yamal caught the eye with his brilliant pieces of play, Raphinha also deserves plaudits as his double means he has contributed to 16 goals in the Champions League this season.

Only Lionel Messi (14 goals, five assists in 2011-12) has had a hand in more goals in a single season for Barcelona in the competition than Raphinha this season (11 goals, five assists).
