Ah good, Atletico have injuries to attacking players, and playing away from home. That's going to be a horrible game to watch, at least Burnley stayed on their feet, I doubt we'll see more than 30 minutes of ball-in-play time tomorrow...

  2. Too early to judge new signings?published at 12:23 BST 16 September

JC: Hi Phil. Is it too early to judge teams on their new signings, especially the ones added at the end of the transfer window?

Hello, JC. I’d say the answer to this would be “yes” because even at those clubs who had added high quality, such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City, those players still need time to adapt and get used to the manager's strategies.

It is very rare that you inject three/four new players into a team and they gel straight away.

  3. PL six top Champions League spendingpublished at 12:16 BST 16 September

    Champions League

It was a very lively transfer window for English clubs this summer, so much so that the top six spenders among Champions League qualifiers are all Premier League clubs.

Liverpool, having twice broken the British transfer record - first for Florian Wirtz, then for Alexander Isak - lead the way on £415m.

Bayer Leverkusen, with that Wirtz cash to spend, were the biggest spending non-English club at £172m.

Liverpool have taken a patient approach with Alexander Isak so far as he builds towards full fitness after such a disrupted summer.

The £125m striker was not involved in their 1-0 win at Burnley on Sunday but Arne Slot says he could play "45 minutes as a minimum" against Atletico Madrid.

However, he added that if he did so, Isak would not be able to do the same in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Saturday lunchtime so it will be interesting to see how Liverpool use him this week.

"Alex is far from ready for that schedule of three games a week, 90 minutes," Slot said after the game at Burnley.

"We could have used him today for five minutes, then Wednesday for 10, then 15 but we don't believe that is the way to build him up.

"In Sweden they did the right thing of giving him good sessions without playing him a lot because if you play, you cannot give the player good sessions.

"We did the same thing so now Wednesday or Saturday, he will be able to play 45 as a minimum, maybe a little bit more.

"But if he plays 45 on Wednesday, do not expect him to play 45 or more on Saturday because his body is not prepared for that."

Jamie: I feel that Wirtz's form is going under the radar a bit. For £116m you want an instant impact. A handful of games in and he hasn't produced one standout performance yet. At what stage do we start to question his Premier League ability?

Hello Jamie. He has been quiet, but I actually thought there were real signs of Florian Wirtz settling in for Liverpool at Burnley on Sunday. He linked the play a lot and seemed to be developing an understanding with those around him.

It’s early days and even the best players need time to settle and fit into a new team. I certainly would not be questioning his Premier League ability. I am sure he will come good and thought the signs were there at Turf Moor.

Chris: Hi Phil, question on this Liverpool team. A lot of wonderful signings and they clearly have the knack of winning. But it's a brand new attack with no cohesion, certainly a shadow of Klopp's attack. Have pundits perhaps overestimated them?

I’ve actually seen all of Liverpool’s games this season and would agree there is some way to go for them to be back to their best, but that in itself is a worrying prospect for their challengers, especially with Alexander Isak still to come.

Arne Slot is still trying to piece it all together, but I thought Florian Wirtz showed real signs of fitting in at Burnley on Sunday. New players, no matter how good or expensive, take time to gel but I’m sure Slot will get it right and they will be in the shake-up for all the big prizes.

On an individual note, I would still select Andrew Robertson ahead of Milos Kerkez.

Liverpool welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield in their opening fixture on Wednesday and it has been announced that the La Liga giants will be without star striker Julian Alvarez.

The former Manchester City man came off with knee discomfort in Atletico's 2-0 win over Villarreal on Saturday and is not part of Diego Simeone's squad for the trip to Merseyside.

Midfielder Johnny Cardoso is also missing from the travelling party, as are Jose Maria Gimenez, Thiago Almada and Alex Baena.

    Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is having to test the strength of his squad, even at this early stage of the season.

The Arsenal manager confirmed in Monday's pre-match news conference that captain Martin Odegaard hasn't travelled to Bilbao as he remains sidelined with a shoulder injury.

William Saliba could make his return but Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Ben White are all out.

Yemi: Hello Phil, if you had to label one of the English teams as a dark horse - that could surprise everyone beyond that of the favourites Liverpool - which team would it be and for what reason?

Morning, Yemi. I think I would say Arsenal because they reached the semi-final last season and have added some real quality in the transfer window.

The experience of the last Champions League campaign will serve them well and they now have the strength of squad to finally break through and win one of the major trophies.

Do I think Arsenal will win the Champions League? Not so sure about that, but I think they can make a real impact.

Just looking through the fixtures for the PL teams, I would say that Spurs have the easier draw of matches. Much harder than, let's say Liverpool's or Man City's...How does that work?!

Harry: Question for Phil - I'm not a Tottenham fan but their Champions League run is something which I am excited to see given how they gained entry. How do you personally rate their chances of getting through the league stages? Do you think the new leadership and signings are ready?

Morning, Harry. If I was a Spurs fan, I would be very excited by new manager Thomas Frank and the early signs have been very promising, apart from the home loss to Bournemouth.

They have some very tough games, especially a trip to holders PSG, but they played well against them in the Super Cup final so there should be no fear.

I’ll say definitely Champions League play-off at the very least.

Re - Tim @10:46? Why not? Romero and Van der Ven staying fit is pretty much essential but we have sneakily acquired decent strength in depth and with a coach who is able to change his mind we could really do all right. More optimistic Tim.
