Alvarez spot-kick ruled out for double touch

  1. Second half was 'completely different'published at 23:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March

FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Club Brugge (agg 6-1)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery told TNT Sports: "We started the match under our expectations. They dominated the match. We didn't play the first half like we planned.

"We spoke at half-time, changed some thing, tried to change something in our minds to play better and it was completely different."

FT: Arsenal 2-2 PSV Eindhoven (agg 9-3)

    Arsenal

Arsenal forward Raheem Sterling, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was nice and I should have had a goal as well. It was nice to be out there and contribute to the team. It was just to play my game and be dynamic. I tried to do that.

“When you have a leader like we do with the manager he has a tight knit group. You can feel it. From minute one I could sense a top-club mentality. Yes we are a few points behind but there are all different circumstances but I think the boys have done really well and in the last bit of the season to give it a right push.

“It is a decent performance from myself. I know what I am capable of. You just want to be playing. You are at a top club with top players and you just have to wait for your moment. And that is what I am doing. I am still faithful that I have still got a big part to play.

“You can only control what you can control. I have not had as many minutes as I would have liked but I have had the opportunities. It is down to myself to keep knocking at the door. I believe within myself that I have a lot to play here whether it is 10 minutes, 45 or a start. I just need to be ready and try and help the team as much as possible.

“With a leader like Mikel, he is not somebody where I want to physically be knocking on his door. He is the one in charge. All I can do is on the training field or on the pitch. It is down to me to push and have it in his thought process."

  3. 'We are very happy because we are where we want to be'published at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March

FT: Arsenal 2-2 PSV Eindhoven (agg 9-3)

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports: "We started well and scored the goal We were ahead twice but unfortunately we didn't mane to win the game. You could see in the second half we looked tired, we were late for a few things and we lacked a little bit of cohesion, making so many changes. Overall we are very happy because we are where we want to be.

"There were some players that deserved some football and I was very happy to give them a chance. There were a lot of things to improve."

Never understood why Atletico Madrid are considered inspired, plucky underdogs. They parked the bus in this match from the 31st second, make no effort to attack, work the ref, waste time, and play for penalties. Which they got, and lost. I say good riddance.

FT: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-2) - Real Madrid win 4-2 on penalties

This is the fifth time that Atletico have been knocked out of the Champions League knockout stages (incl. finals) by Real Madrid; only Bayern Munich (7 v Real Madrid) have been eliminated by a single opponent more often in the competition’s knockout rounds.

  8. What happened with that penalty shootout?published at 23:00 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (2-2 on agg, 2-4 on pens)

The key moment in that penalty shootout came with the fourth kick, taken by Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez.

With it 2-1 in Real's favour, Alvarez slipped as he took his effort. Initially it looked like he had got away with it as the ball flew into the roof of the net.

However, the VAR official quickly checked and the replay showed Alvarez connected with the ball with his right foot and the ball then hit his standing left leg for a double kick.

That is against the rules with penalties so the 'goal' was ruled out.

So, instead of it being 2-2, it went back to 2-1 to Real, with Fede Valverde making it 3-1.

Angel Correa scored for Atletico to make it 3-2 to Real, then both Lucas Vazquez and Marcos Llorente missed for Real and Atletico respectively.

That gave Antonio Rudiger the chance to win the shootout for Real, which he did as they sealed a 4-2 victory on penalties to set up a quarter-final with Arsenal.

Atletico very unfortunate with that slip double-tap, but that’s why VAR is brilliant & needed.

Sometimes the best team doesn't win. Sometimes you need a huge chunk of luck to go through. Real Madrid have had luck in spades tonight.

Julian Alvarez slipping, an irregular kick disallowed. Antonio Rudiger sneaking in the last kick. Just wow. They got away with it.

You can see why Atletico Madrid feel like the underdogs. They have given their all and they are out.

Antonio Rudiger went the same way he did against Manchester City, and Jan Oblak guessed the right way but he couldn't keep it out. It trickled over the line.

He's bereft. He's still stood on his goalline. He can't believe it.

    This to win it.

It is an awful penalty from Antonio Rudiger. Jan Oblak gets his hands to it, but the penalty just about creeps over the line and that's it.
