Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest): Every time you keep thinking his side are going to drop, he doesn't. He just keeps them going. Excellent team performance, real good victory against a stubborn Everton team. They made them look levels above and they go into the new year in the top four and rightly so. Fair play to them.

  3. Randal Kolo Muani set for PSG exitpublished at 15:11 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

At this point two years ago, Randal Kolo Muani was about to establish himself as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe, with a superb end to the season at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Unfortunately, a €75m move to Paris St-Germain the following summer has not worked out.

Muani was unable to force his way into Luis Enrique’s side on a regular basis last season as Kylian Mbappe played out the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 club.

This term, PSG have largely played without a central striker.

It means Muani is likely to be one of the more notable loan moves this month, potentially with an obligation to buy. There has been interest from England and Germany.

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz (Liverpool): Another game, another goal, another assist. Both of them just look like football is too easy for them.

They're really enjoying themselves, Liverpool are enjoying themselves. We're in the midst of seeing something special with this team on 45 points with a game in hand at the turn of the year. They could break 100 very, very easily and they could run away with the title.

Liam Delap (Ipswich): I believe this is the first time for Team of the Week. I was toying with Alexander Isak again or even big Chris Wood, but having watched the Ipswich game against Chelsea - and expecting Chelsea to do a number on Ipswich - if I'm being totally honest.

He was really good, that's the type of Delap I have been wanting to see. He used his physical attributes, he's still raw, that's fine because he's young. He was cute in the link-up play but when his team really needed him, he did the hard yards defensively. When his team shifted the ball up to him, he kept it and looked after it.

He made the Chelsea defenders, who are not that great, look bang average and that's what can happen. If Ipswich stand any chance of staying up, it is all on that fella. It is on how ugly and aggressive he can be. He got a nice goal and nice assist.

As an Arsenal fan, I get frustrated about football "fans" discrediting Liverpool and blaming other teams for falling off - at the end of the day they've secured more points and therefore there's no one we can blame apart from ourselves for not matching them. Anyway, we have a young team and I think we'll be in title contention for a few years to come. Nwaneri is the most exciting player I've seen since Henry, maybe even more so!

Troy Deeney's team of the week

Troy Deeney's team of the week banner

Mikel Merino (Arsenal): He was quality. I'm not sure if he's going to be up to the level of Arsenal but I'm going to give him until next year with a pre-season. He's neat, tidy, very fluid in the way he plays. He can go as a six, he can go as an eight, he just keeps the ball ticking over really well. I bet as a team-mate he's excellent to have in your team.

Joelinton (Newcastle): We had him in last week, back-to-back weeks now. I just keep thinking how did anyone think he was a number nine? This guy is a monster. He runs over people. That ball got put in the box and there was no chance little Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United was getting that. Arm across him, get out the way, goal. I thought it was a big powerful display.

Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham): He was solid, obviously had a bit of time off for his ban. He's come back, new haircut, looks ready and looks like he has got the bit between his teeth. He looks like somebody who was a bit frustrated and annoyed.

  7. Defenders - Alexander-Arnold, Schar, Greaves & Davispublished at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

Troy Deeney's team of the week

Troy Deeney's team of the week banner

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool): We're going to have to keep putting him in the team when he keeps delivering like this. Liverpool are flying and playing unbelievably well. It looks like he is off to Real Madrid so for the rest of us, enjoy it over these next four or five months because, when he's playing like he did against West Ham, it's excellent to see.

Fabian Schar (Newcastle) and Jacob Greaves (Ipswich Town): I thought both of them were solid, made really good tackles when they needed to.

A lot of the work was done in front of them but any work they were called upon to do, they did really well. They were solid in the tackle, they're not both known for being good footballers but were neat and tidy and did everything you want from a centre-half.

Leif Davis (Ipswich Town): I'm not completely sold on this guy if I'm being totally honest with you at the moment, but when he plays like he did the other night against Chelsea, going forward he was excellent.

Martin Dubravka (Newcastle): He's done well since he stepped in and against Manchester United, even though they dominated, he was excellent with his feet, setting off the attacks. I thought he had a really solid performance and it's not something that I have said about him over the years.

  10. Rashford's 'agency meeting' ripostepublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Marcus Rashford has publicly rejected a newspaper story suggesting he had met representatives of a leading football agency to help smooth an exit out of Manchester United this month.

Rashford put a copy of the story on his social media feed and added: "Been a lot of false stories written over the past few weeks but guys this is getting ridiculous - never met with any agency and don't have any plans to....'

Yet Rashford's post leaves many unanswered questions.

The 27-year-old returned to Ruben Amorim's squad for Monday's home defeat by Newcastle. But he remained on the bench throughout, even though United lost their fourth game in a row and have not scored in their last three.

Amorim has not said specifically what the issue is but it is hard to see Rashford having a long term future at Old Trafford.

However, the market for one of United's highest earners is not extensive and it is felt a major agency would have more chance of manipulating a deal because they have extensive contacts.

Rashford has had his say over the story - but his United future remains open to doubt.

Sean Dyche has quietly performed a miracle at Everton. They’ve had no money, lots of injuries, huge ownership issues and he’s steered them clear of relegation for three seasons now. Sure the football hasn’t been great but survival in the PL while the club steers to safety and a new ground is a huge achievement.

    Martin Zubimendi

Club: Real Sociedad Age: 25 Nationality: Spanish Position: Midfield

GuillemBalague: "He turned down Liverpool and was a star of the moment of the season when he replaced Rodri at half-time for Spain in the Euro final. England exploded with happiness when Rodri went off but he is perhaps, after Rodri, the best holding midfielder in the world.

"I was told everything was done with Liverpool but he decided personally not to leave. Now three months into the season he is ready to go. When Manchester City want a replacement for Rodri, that is the guy to look for. Barca would like him but don't have the money and he is ready to leave now.

"He is not the strongest or fastest but he reads the game so well and leads the team. He understands the role perfectly. I don't think Liverpool will go back, although Zubimendi is a different level to Ryan Gravenberch. I know Man City like him a lot. And teams with 60m euros? He can only go to the Premier League. Chelsea don't need him, Manchester United maybe?"

    The new Mohamed Salah?

    Omar Marmoush

Club: Eintracht Frankfurt Age: 25 Nationality: Egyptian Position: Forward

Raphael Honigstein: "He is really dynamic, a wide forward who can play through the middle.

"Some people have compared him to Mohamed Salah, perhaps not as tricky or as explosive but his finishing is incredible.

"He came to Germany aged 18 and for six years we didn't think he would set the world alight, but this season he explodes and we are now talking about 80m euros for him.

"There is a big move ahead for him. It is very unlikely Frankfurt will keep him and he is going to be a superstar. He would be a great buy for any team - there will be a lot of competition for him."

I can only see Liverpool extending their lead. Chelsea are the only team who stood a chance and they're falling away. Arsenal are great at set pieces, not so good at playing football. They'll finish 3rd or 4th.

  16. Ipswich reignite Philogene interestpublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Ipswich have shown an interest in taking Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene to Portman Road this month.

The 22-year-old was close to moving to the Tractor Boys in the summer, only to re-join Villa just a year after being sold to Hull.

Ipswich agreed an £18m deal with the Tigers in July but Villa inserted a clause into their deal with Hull when they sold Philogene in 2023, meaning they would have three days to match any bid once a deal had been agreed.

The England Under-21 international opted to return to Villa Park but has made just four starts, two in the Premier League, this season.

Ipswich are looking at wide options after Chiedozie Ogbene's season-ending Achilles injury in October.

Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys have no desire to sell Liam Delap, who joined from Manchester City in a deal worth £20m in the summer, this January.

The striker has seven goals in 17 league starts, including a penalty in the 2-0 win over Chelsea on Monday, and is key to their survival hopes with Kieran McKenna's side a point from safety.

What sums up Brentford's defence this season is the fact that there were no Arsenal assists for any of their 3 goals (would anyone know if this has happened before?!). We keep gifting goals by giving the ball away or not clearing balls from the box.

Ivan Juric is looking for his first win since as Southampton manager as he prepares to welcome Brentford to St Mary's.

Saints boss Juric on team news: “We will see tomorrow for Flynn [Downes]. He hasn’t trained with the team but we will see tomorrow if it’s possible to use him for the game.

“New injuries? No, I don’t think so.”

  20. Defeat could be 'curtains' for Clement - Suttonpublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    Rangers v Celtic (15:00 GMT)

Rangers' injury crisis has hampered manager Philippe Clement's chances of bridging what is a sizeable gap to fierce rivals Celtic.

They have won one of their last five games in all competitions, a run that included that defeat to Celtic on penalties in the Scottish League Cup final.

A draw at home to Tottenham in the Europa League left Rangers in eighth place in the extended league phase - if they remain there after their final two fixtures later this month then the Glasgow giants will progress straight through to the last 16.

But dropped points in their last two league games - a 2-1 defeat at St Mirren and 2-2 draw away to Motherwell - has heaped the pressure on Clement.

Former Celtic player Chris Sutton told Sky Sports: "I suspect that if Rangers lose today in front of their own fans then it will be curtains for Clement."
