Secretly, Fifa will be loving Man City's exit, because they will be desperate to prove the Club World Cup isn't just an elaborate edition of the Champions League with a few overseas guests to make up the numbers. One less criticism for them to deal with!

Saudi Arabia have spent billions to try to become a force in world football. On Monday night in Florida, celebrating supporters felt as if a small chunk of that had been repaid.

Monday nights are more synonymous with live wrestling shows on television in the USA - but it was football that provided the big sporting show on the box this time as Marcos Leonardo's winner sent City packing.

As former England winger Andros Townsend put it on Dazn: "Al-Hilal have shocked the world."

For Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo, whose goal won the match, it was an emotional evening.

Afterwards, he paid tribute to his mother, who is recovering after more than two months in hospital with a serious illness.

An iconic celebration for the winner. A fairy-tale story. An Al-Hilal victory against Man City, with superstars all over the pitch.

These scenes will go all over the world. It wasn’t a fluke but really worrying signs for Pep Guardiola. They could have scored even more. It's a real worry the chances they gave up. City were devastated.

The Manchester City ‘get involved’ from the other day has aged poorly. Those City fans expecting to walk the league might have had a well-needed reality check ahead of the new season.

We didn't see that coming, but what a game it was. This game was pure football and a well deserved win.

A huge night for Saudi football. They want to be seen and recognised. They have great players and a great manager [former Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi] now. It is one of those games that will be remembered because it was a phenomenal performance.

When Ronaldo said a few days ago that the Saudi league is now one of the top 5 leagues in the world, people ridiculed that comment. Who is laughing now?

    Sam, Toronto

Is there a bigger issue for the Premier League than Pep losing all his management mojo and looking a little lost? Have City legitimised the quality of the Saudi Pro League, a massive PR coup for them with resources to pay players a lot more than anywhere else?

    Robert, Belfast

I'm more disappointed than I thought I would be, to be honest. As a lot of others, I saw it as a glorified friendly tournament, but I'm actually disappointed that City haven't progressed further.

Right, back to that Manchester City debrief.

For those just joining us, the Premier League giants have been knocked out of the Club World Cup overnight by Saudi Pro League minnows Al-Hilal.

Pep Guardiola's side started the last-16 tie in Orlando well, taking the lead through Bernardo Silva in the ninth minute, but needed an Erling Haaland equaliser to force extra-time after conceding twice in the opening seven minutes of the second half.

Former Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly fired Al-Hilal back in front with a powerful header in the first half of extra-time, only for substitute Phil Foden to pull City back level again with a volley from an acute angle.

But Brazil striker Marcos Leonardo settled the tie in the 112th minute, prodding home the rebound at the back post for his second goal of the game after Ederson had parried a save into his path.

  10. How does Man City exit impact Club World Cup draw?published at 08:28 British Summer Time 1 July

While you ponder those questions, let's assess where Manchester City's exit means to the teams remaining in the Club World Cup.

The defending champions had been pegged as one of the favourites to win the tournament after their 100% record in the group stages.

City would have faced Brazilian side Fluminense in the quarter-finals and could have met Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Enzo Maresca's side will play Palmeiras in the last eight and now know they cannot face another European side before the final.

Simon Turner: Every EPL team will note how City can be done on the counter. Quick passes, north-south and east-west, combined with offensive pace had the City centre-backs twisted up like pretzels.

Manchester City enjoyed 69% of the possession and carved out plenty of chances.

But while they were unable to make the most of those opportunities, Al-Hilal were clinical in front of goal:

    Manchester City

    • Attempted shots - 30
    • Shots on target - 14
    • Goals - 3

    Al-Hilal

    • Attempted shots - 17

    Man City 3-4 Al-Hilal (aet)

Pep Guardiola conceded that Manchester City had shortcomings at both ends of the field following their 4-3 defeat against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in the last 16 of the Club World Cup:

"We regret a little bit that we allowed them to run a bit more. They defended so deep, the wingers were so quick and Bounou made a lot of saves.

"In the end, we have to score and be clinical. They arrived more in the transitions. They did not create much in the first half, but we did but could not finish it.

"I had a feeling we could go through but they punished us on the transitions."

You can see the disappointment. Manchester City will be hurting. What happens next? I don't know.

The Premier League starts in six weeks [15 August] and Pep [Guardiola] probably needs to get a few players out of the door.

My big question will be the confidence of the squad, is there now a confidence issue?

I just think the balance isn't right. Most teams sit in a low block and hit Man City on the counter attack. That is the big concern, Man City have to tighten up in transitions.

Manchester city manager Pep Guardiola also praised his players, who had looked set to go deep in the competition after regrouping with some key new signings following the end of a difficult Premier League campaign.

However, he said they would now "rest minds" before regrouping for the new season, which is just over six weeks away.

"It is a pity," he said about the defeat to Al-Hilal. "We have been on an incredible journey together and were in a good place. The vibe was really good.

"I cannot thank the players enough for training and playing how they have been.

"But it was a difficult game. The margins were minimal. We created a lot and (Yassine) Bounou made incredible saves but we were so open.

"We would have loved to have continued, it will only be once every four years, and we had a feeling that the team was doing well.

"But we go home and now it is time to rest and rest our minds for the new season."

Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi took charge of the team this summer after leaving his previous post with Inter Milan following their defeat to Paris St-Germain in the final of the Champions League.

And the Italian was understandably full of praise for his players: "The key to this result was the players, the heart they put on the pitch. We had to do something extraordinary because we knew how good Manchester City are, we knew we had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen and we were great.

"Guardiola is the best coach in the world but tonight we did our best and we deserved the result."
