Those last few posts prove that it has not all been doom and gloom regarding Nottingham Forest's appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager.

It is fair to say though that the groundswell of opinion expressed via straw polls and our Get Involved entries in this page today have been largely negative.

As BBC Sport reporter Nick Mashiter writes, the new Forest boss has a job to do to win round club supporters...

There seems to be a lot of ignorant comments, a revision of history and short-term memory when it comes to Ange. Yes, he had a bad Premier League year, but injuries were a crucial factor in that. He did finish 5th in his 1st year...and he won a trophy.

For a club like Forest, why wouldn't they want to win a trophy even if they finish 17th like Spurs did last season? Let's face it, they were never going to challenge for the Champions League again, even with Nuno.

A lot of the Ange negativity ignores that he won the Europa League and Spurs were without [key centre-backs] Micky van de Ben and Christian Romero. At one point we had something like 11 injuries or more and were playing teenagers. He’ll do well at Forest, mark my words.

  5. Marinakis and Postecoglou meet at awards ceremonypublished at 13:55 British Summer Time

    Nottingham Forest

So Pat mentioned there have been rumours linking Ange Postecoglou with the Nottingham Forest job over the past few weeks - but why?

Well, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and Postecoglou did have a very public meeting before today's announcement, although there is no suggestion this had any bearing on the subsequent appointment.

The pair were present at the draw ceremony for the Greek Super League, where Postecoglou was handed an award by Marinakis for being the first Greek manager to win a European trophy.

In a video online, the duo appear to be seated next to each other throughout the ceremony.

  6. 'Postecoglou not the most popular' - fan viewpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time

Pat Riddell, Nottingham Forest fan writer

Postecoglou replacing Nuno is perhaps no surprise given the rumours over the past few weeks.

However, he does not seem to be the most popular name among the fanbase.

Forget the Europa League final win over a Manchester United side in turmoil. Postecoglou nearly relegated the ninth richest club in the world.

His gung-ho tactics and high line will succeed spectacularly or fail miserably.

We should be looking to progressive managers who will continue the tradition established by Nuno and Cooper - names such as Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola are much more in that vein.

The squad is the best in a lifetime.

Can the new manager pick things up where Nuno left off and take us to the next level? Or will we be left dreaming of what was and what might have been?

People can complain about our owner all they want but it was under Marinakis that we went from BOTTOM of the Championship to Europe in the space of a few years. I'm sure many other clubs would love him as their owner...

We published this recap of Ange Postecoglou's own footballing journey a little earlier today, when the news broke that he was in line to become the new Nottingham Forest boss:

Postecoglou's playing career was spent in Australia, primarily with South Melbourne, where he played under Ferenc Puskas, the legendary Hungarian to whom he attributes his coaching philosophy.

He stepped into management in 1996 with South Melbourne before winning back-to-back A-League titles with Brisbane Roar between 2009 and 2012.

After a season with Melbourne Victory he became manager of Australia in 2013 and guided his country to the 2014 World Cup as well as victory in the 2015 Asian Cup.

Further silverware followed during his time in Japan with Yokohama F Marinos, where he ended the club's 15-year wait for a J-League title in 2019.

Few in Scotland knew much about Postecoglou when Celtic appointed him in 2021, but after initially struggling he delivered five trophies across two seasons.

He is one of only five managers - along with Jock Stein, Martin O'Neill, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon - to secure a domestic clean sweep with Celtic.

Postecoglou became the first Australian to manage in the Premier League when he took over at Tottenham in 2023 and led the club to their first trophy in 17 years with the Europa League triumph against Manchester United in May.

So, in a nutshell, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis wants Ange Postecoglou to help the club "compete with the very best and challenge for trophies" and has been chosen because of his "credentials and track-record".

We will sum up Postecoglou's track record in a moment, but shall we have a quick show of thumbs?

Will Postecoglou help Nottingham Forest compete with the best and challenge for trophies?

Thumbs up for yes, down for no...

  13. 'We are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey' - Marinakispublished at 13:20 British Summer Time

    Nottingham Forest

Here's what owner Evangelos Marinakis has had to say on the appointment...

“We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies. His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.

“After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies.

"Ange has the credentials and the track-record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey."

  16. How will Forest's tactics change under Postecoglou?published at 13:10 British Summer Time

Across his last three jobs, Ange Postecoglou's sides have played in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-1-1 shape that aimed to dominate the ball, playing quickly with it, and pressing incredibly aggressively without it. The high intensity of his style in all phases has become a hallmark of his system, with both positives and negatives.

Reading that, it is clear Nuno’s counter-attacking style differs largely from Ange’s approach, so what does this mean for Forest?

Forest's transfer business this summer appears to have been done with an eye on becoming a more technical, ball-dominant side. Interestingly, James McAtee, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko are all players who have all developed at Manchester City, highlighting the change in intent.

Big money signing Omari Hutchinson and fellow Chelsea graduate Calum Hudson-Odoi too might enjoy playing in a way that ensures they keep the ball more, with license to create.

Questions arise when looking at the out of possession differences between both managers however. Nuno has often held the lowest defensive line in the league across his various clubs, with Ange playing the highest defensive line at Spurs.

Ange has been reluctant to alter his system but there was a level of pragmatism seen in Spurs’ Europa League win. Spurs were happier to defend their own box for large periods of time leading to success against Frankfurt and Manchester United.

Without a preseason, and coming into a club that has been built on a counter attacking, five-at-the-back style, adopting an approach more in line with his Spurs' knockout games might be a sensible thing to do early in his tenure.

As Ben described earlier, there has been a bit of a backlash on these pages following the news that former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is being considered as a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo as Nottingham Forest boss.

Many naysayers have highlighted the upheaval a complete change in playing styles could cause.

But what would those changes look like?

  18. Recap: Postecoglou closes in on Forest jobpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time

Events at the City Ground have moved at a fair old pace today, so let's have a quick recap.

    Here are the top lines:

  19. Postecoglou won Europa League 'because he adapted'published at 13:00 British Summer Time

Ange Postecoglou may have frustrated supporters with his dogmatic commitment to attacking principles, especially during his two seasons as Tottenham manager.

But pundits Gareth Bale and Robbie Savage both held up his decision to adopt a more defensive style of play in Spurs' Europa League final victory over Manchester United as proof that he is willing to adapt.

"This showed there is a plan B," former Tottenham forward Bale said on TNT Sports.

"I guess as a manager if Ange Postecoglou also matures, and brings that type of defensive side to his teams, of course he can still have great success."

While ex-Leicester midfielder Savage added on BBC Radio 5 Live: "He's adapted, big Ange. He hasn't gone a full press, he hasn't gone with a high line. He sat deep and won the game because he adapted."

  20. Can Postecoglou adapt 'Ange-ball'?published at 12:55 British Summer Time

There has been a lot of focus on Ange Postecoglou's attacking principles and how that could work with a team built on defensively solidity and rapid counter attacks.

However, Tottenham's Europa League final win over Manchester United in May showed he can adapt his approach.

They had just 27.7% of the ball - the lowest amount of possession Spurs had in games they won under Postecoglou.

In the second half they had just one touch inside the opposition box, did not have a shot on or off target, and just 19.8% possession.

And in uncharacteristic fashion Postecoglou sacrificed an attacking player for a defensive one when Brennan Johnson was replaced by centre-back Kevin Danso.

Overall Spurs had three shots, just 27.7% possession and completed 115 passes, all the lowest figures Opta has on record by any team in a major European final (since 2009-10).
