Football never stands still for a moment, and while all the talk has moved on to Nuno Espirito Santo's potential successor at Nottingham Forest, we are conscious that news of his sacking will still be a shock to many.

It was announced by Forest in an 80-word statement, released shortly after midnight.

If you were surprised to wake up to the news this morning, you are in good company.

Even the Forest players were caught on the hop, it seems...

Can't think of a worse fit - Forest's success is based on organisation and defensive solidity, everything Ange ignores. He was completely found out in the Premier League by the end - I genuinely think he could take Forest down.

    Jon

This would be a disaster. Completely the wrong man. Totally different philosophy to Nuno. The players would be learning what he wants on the job while we lose in the process. How can somebody who nearly got a club the size of Spurs relegated be the right man?

  3. Will Postecoglou and Marinakis work?published at 11:18 British Summer Time

    The one million dollar question.

Ange Postecoglou has shown multiple times during his brief time in England that he does have a bit of fire in his belly.

He isn't afraid to speak out in news conferences and air his frustrations and would often get defensive if questioned on things such as his future or style of play.

In January, he snapped at the opening question in one of his post-match interviews, sarcastically answering by saying "great way to start an interview."

And in May, prior to the Europa League final, an emotional Postecoglou angrily dismissed the suggestion he is a "clown" in reference to a report in the Standard that suggested he was "teetering between hero and clown".

It wasn't always in news conferences, either.

In April, during the defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the Australian cupped his ear towards the Spurs supporters in what looked to be a defiant gesture although he later stated he simply wanted to hear their cheers.

Could this be the exact kind of character Marinakis needs? Or is it a match made in hell?

When he [Ange Postecoglou] was manager of Spurs, there were games he would be down to nine men and they would still have a high line on the halfway line, playing this ridiculously ambitious style of football. Some might say naive.

He is married to his principles. If you're hiring him, you're hiring him knowing that's his style.

  5. Thumbs down to Postecoglou?published at 11:08 British Summer Time

We ran a straw poll of thumbs earlier this morning asking if Ange Postecoglou is the right appointment for Nottingham Forest.

While the ratio is 3:1 against the Australian replacing Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Tottenham manager has had more than 200 thumbs up.

  6. Does anyone like the Postecoglou appointment?published at 11:02 British Summer Time

We are getting A LOT of responses from people saying that Ange Postecoglou to Nottingham Forest is a bad move, and Andy reckons he doesn't know a single fan that likes the potential appointment.

Does anyone think it could work out?

Appointing Ange just proves Marinakis knows nothing about football. Ange's tactics (or lack of) have been found out in the Prem, he will run the team into the ground. Forest fans get ready for a squad full of injuries, moody post-match interviews and excuses. It'll end in tears.

    Geoff in London

Anyone but Ange! I'm baffled why we would bring in a manager with an awful record in the Prem? I don't know a Forest fan who supports this. It's going to be another tough season. I hope he's gone by Christmas otherwise our best players are on the way out.

It's also worth noting that Nottingham Forest find themselves in the Europa League...the very competition Tottenham won under Ange Postecoglou's guidance last season.

Remember, Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final in Bilbao.

Forest's first match in the league phase is at Real Betis on 24 September.

Could Postecoglou be making an instant return to Spain in the Europa League?

  9. 'Postecoglou has proven he can win trophies'published at 10:55 British Summer Time

    Sami Mokbel

I think the key thing with Postecoglou is the track record of winning trophies. He has won trophies everywhere he has been. Yes, Spurs' Premier League campaign last season was diabolical, but we can't forget that wonderful night in Bilbao.

I think that will be the attraction for Nottingham Forest. A manager who has proven he can win trophies and the biggest prizes.

  11. Who is Ange Postecoglou?published at 10:52 British Summer Time

Ange Postecoglou's playing career was spent in Australia, primarily with South Melbourne, where he played under Ferenc Puskas, the legendary Hungarian to whom he attributes his coaching philosophy.

He stepped into management in 1996 with South Melbourne before winning back-to-back A-League titles with Brisbane Roar between 2009 and 2012.

After a season with Melbourne Victory he became manager of Australia in 2013 and guided his country to the 2014 World Cup as well as victory in the 2015 Asian Cup.

Further silverware followed during his time in Japan with Yokohama F Marinos, where he ended the club's 15-year wait for a J-League title in 2019.

Few in Scotland knew much about Postecoglou when Celtic appointed him in 2021, but after initially struggling he delivered five trophies across two seasons.

He is one of only five managers - along with Jock Stein, Martin O'Neill, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon - to secure a domestic clean sweep with Celtic.

Postecoglou became the first Australian to manage in the Premier League when he took over at Tottenham in 2023 and led the club to their first trophy in 17 years with the Europa League triumph against Manchester United in May.

Ange Postecoglou made a habit of providing us with golden quotes during his time with Tottenham Hotspur, one of which came when giving a speech following their victory parade to celebrate winning the Europa League.

He said: "I will leave you with this - all the best television series, season three is better than season two."

While Spurs may have cancelled upon the conclusion of the second series - Nottingham Forest could be set to save it and give the fans the third series they crave.

  19. 'Nuno's role untenable after breakdown of relations'published at 10:22 British Summer Time

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

It was perhaps inevitable it was going to end this way for Nuno Espirito Santo once he took public swipes at the club for their slow transfer business.

He followed that up by revealing his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had changed over the summer and they were not as close as before.

His position was uncertain, as BBC Sport was told, from there - especially with interest in Ange Postecoglou - and despite his success at the City Ground, returning the club to Europe for the first time in 30 years, Nuno's role ultimately became untenable after the breakdown of relations.

Yet it felt, certainly in the first 18 months after replacing Steve Cooper in December 2023, it was the perfect match. A siege mentality was created amid the backdrop of a four-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules and controversial social media posts.

The Portuguese did deserve better than a statement in the early hours of the morning.

His work of taking them from relegation candidates to Champions League contenders should not be overlooked and, while we don't know the thought process behind it, a 00:15 release on Tuesday morning feels like burying bad news.

As a Spurs fan, I think Forest should stay clear of Ange. He has no ‘Plan B’ and has horrific league form in the PL, having been given every chance to turn it around. Forest have so much potential and so many great players, I think they deserve better.

    Otis

Success with Nuno was cemented and built on what was already in place by Cooper. I cannot see Ange's style of play working, specially with all the players we have just signed, it feels like slamming your car in reverse!
