Chesterfield make three changes from the side which drew with Walsall last weekend.

Jenson Metcalfe, James Berry and Paddy Madden come in for Chey Dunkley, Ollie Banks and Will Grigg.

Dunkley misses out altogether but Banks and Grigg both make the bench.

With four changes of leadership across the last three match days, League Two can argue to be the tightest of divisions in the EFL and with the way the fixtures are arranged today we could see another two sides get a turn at the summit.

There's a five-point spread across the top 12 and that doesn't even include the potential big hitters of Salford City and MK Dons who are a further two points back.

Victory for Chesterfield in the early game against Notts County would propel them up to seventh while just a point for the latter would put them top, for now...

Notts County simply ran out of gas last season with Stuart Maynard (above, left) replacing Luke Williams as manager in January and managing just one win from his first 10 games in charge.

The loss of the prolific Macauley Langstaff in the summer transfer window won't have improved the mood of the Notts faithful, but Maynard has overseen just the two league defeats so far to restore optimism at Meadow Lane.

They're unbeaten on the road with three wins and two draws - the last time they made a better start to an EFL season was in 2014 when they went 10 without defeat although don't remind Magpies fans that they were relegated from League One at the end of that campaign.

A point for Notts County will send them top but a brief look at the summit of League Two tells you a few clubs have their eyes on that as well.

  4. Spireites aiming highpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 12 October

This might be the first EFL meeting between these two sides for six-and-a-half years but they've seen a fair bit of each other in the interim period.

The highlight (although don't tell Chesterfield fans that) was the National League play-off final in 2023, won by Notts County in a penalty shoot-out at Wembley.

Chesterfield erased those memories swiftly with a 12-point romp to the National League title last season and, despite an inconsistent start to life back in the EFL, remain the bookies' second favourites for promotion.

Paul Cook has guided the Spireites on a four-match unbeaten run with three draws and a stunning 3-0 win at Doncaster which may signal they've finally settled back into life in League Two.

When you've got James Berry, Will Grigg, Paddy Madden, Dilan Markanday and Armando Dobra in your armoury, Cook appears to have the firepower to sustain a promotion challenge.

All but two matches in League One have fallen victim to international call-ups, prompting Shrewsbury Town head coach Paul Hurst to propose a blanket break across the league.

But it's a slightly rosier picture in League Two with 12 games in total across the third and fourth tiers this afternoon, starting with the early kick-off at the SMH Group Stadium.

    Afternoon all,

And you thought the EFL was taking a break?

Not for the hardened souls of League One and League Two is there a break in the sun or a visit to the local spa for a wallow in the hot tub.

The fixture computer has served us up some tasty treats starting with the lunchtime meeting between Chesterfield and Notts County in front of virtually a full house in Derbyshire.

League Two is providing one of the most intriguing promotion races already and we could have two changes in the lead come 5pm.

Take a deep breath, we're going in...
