It's been a bit of an uncomfortable start for Birmingham.

28 minutes without live football just feels too long, doesn't it?

Luckily we have n-n-n-n-nineteen games which are about to get under way, the players are out, the pyrotechnics are over, nothing left to do but blow the whistle...

  8. Fallen giants aim to end gloomy week on a highpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 21 September

    Bolton v Reading (15:00 BST)

It was not so very long ago that this was a Premier League fixture but if you ask both sets of fans this weekend it's probably never felt further away from being one again.

Bolton's problems have been largely on the field in recent weeks, they haven't scored since the opening day on 10 August, blanking in four straight since, losing the last three culminating in a 4-0 drubbing at Huddersfield last week which piled pressure on boss Ian Evatt.

They might have taken only seven points from five games, but Reading have had some tough fixtures and their woes have been predominantly off-field since Dai Yongge took the helm and now the proposed takeover of the club fell through this week.

Though they have been on a pretty shoddy run of one win in seven league away games, the Royals have scored on their last six visits to Bolton, losing only once.

Bolton did win this fixture 5-2 last season but they had beaten Reading on just one of the 11 meetings before that.

A draw would possibly suit both sides, but when does logic every apply in League One?

  9. Wrexham aiming to get Hollywood script back on trackpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 21 September

League One leaders Wrexham welcome Crawley Town to the STōK Racecourse Ground, looking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat away at Birmingham in the ‘Hollywood derby’ last time out.

That loss was the first of the season for Phil Parkinson's side who have won all three of their league home games, scoring nine goals in the process.

Crawley are now without a victory in three games having won their opening two fixtures before two losses and a 1-1 draw at home to Stockport last weekend saw them slip to 13th.

The Red Devils have only lost two of their last eight away games but come up against a Wrexham side which boast the best home record in the EFL, winning 20 out of 26.

This will be just the third EFL meeting between the two sides who were both promoted from League Two last season.

Wrexham came out on top in both games, winning this particular fixture 4-1 back in April.

    Charlton v Blackpool (15:00 BST)

James Husband celebrates scoring for Blackpool last weekend against Exeter.Image source, Getty Images

Third-placed Charlton will certainly not be rolling out the red carpet for Steve Bruce and Blackpool this afternoon.

The Addicks are unbeaten in 10 in the league at the Valley, claiming 18 points, but they have struggled against Bruce’s new side in recent years.

The Tangerines haven’t lost at Charlton in their last six visits, last falling to defeat in SE7 in January 2013.

They are however on their longest winless run in the capital in more than eight years.

James Husband’s last-gasp winner gave Bruce a winning start against Exeter last weekend but they remain in the bottom five and already eight points adrift of Nathan Jones’ men.

  11. Evans aiming to burst Blues bubble on milestone daypublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 21 September

    Rotherham v Birmingham (15:00 BST)

Could this be a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ for Birmingham, who follow their much-hyped home win over Wrexham with a potentially tricky trip to Rotherham.

While the eyes of the world were on St Andrew’s on Monday night football, they are back to the bread and butter on Saturday afternoon against a side which came down with them from the Championship last season.

Steve Evans’ new-look Millers are unbeaten in five at home, their best run in more than two years, and played out two stalemates with Blues last season.

However this is a new Birmingham, unbeaten in nine league games, taking 21 points, and with every chance of taking over at the top with a win this afternoon.

It’s also a historic day for the club, this will be their 5,000th match in the top four tiers of English football – the 11th team to reach that milestone.

Can they mark it with another three points as they bid to make an immediate return to the second tier?

  12. A first league meeting in 15 yearspublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 21 September

    Huddersfield v Northampton (15:00 BST)

Huddersfield Town manager Michael Duff.Image source, Getty Images

Huddersfield Town have enjoyed an excellent start to the League One season after being relegated from the Championship.

Michael Duff's side have won four of their opening five games and currently sit in fourth, just one point behind the top three of Wrexham, Birmingham and Charlton.

The Terriers have won both of their home games so far and victory could see them climb to the top of the table by the end of the afternoon depending on results elsewhere.

They welcome a Northampton Town side who are without a victory in three matches and have failed to win any of their last eight away league games.

These two sides haven't met in the EFL since 2009 when they played out a 1-1 draw at Sixfields Stadium. Huddersfield have come out on top in seven of their 13 meetings with Northampton winning two.

  13. Dons hope to stage their own Paradepublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 21 September

Bradford City v AFC Wimbledon (15:00 BST)

Bradford City's Valley ParadeImage source, PA Media

Bradford City may have the biggest following in League Two but three of the last four seasons has seen them in the bottom half of the home form table.

So, does two wins and a draw in West Yorkshire so far show us Valley Parade might become the fortress they hope for this season?

AFC Wimbledon lost five of their last seven away from home last season and have a win and a defeat from their two road trips so far this time around.

Johnnie Jackson's side have recorded impressive wins over Fleetwood and MK Dons over the last two weekends and will fancy they could be the ones to burst the Bradford home bubble.

Notts County v Gillingham (15:00 BST)

Notts County manager Stuart MaynardImage source, Rex Features

It's fair to say Stuart Maynard has taken a while to stamp his mark on Notts County but after a tricky start last season he has got them off to a stunning unbeaten start.

Four successive wins have propelled them to the top of the table with Jodi Jones and David McGoldrick topping the scoring charts with four each.

But, after a false start under Stephen Clemence last season, Gillingham went for League Two promotion experience with Mark Bonner taking over and pushing them up to second place in the early table.

The two EFL meetings last season produced seven goals and an away win each.

    Exeter 2-0 Stevenage

Exeter's magnificent home run against Stevenage continues - that is seven straight wins in this fixture and their unbeaten run against Boro is now 13 matches.

Ed Francis put them on their way on nine minutes with an improvised close-range finish with his back to goal which snuck past Boro keeper Murphy Mahoney and the points were sealed by a wonderful strike from teenage Brighton prospect Kami Doyle who lashed into the roof of the net through a crowd of players five minutes into the second half.

The three points take Gary Caldwell's men into the top-half, two points above Alex Revell's beaten side.

    Exeter 2-0 Stevenage

Another Stevenage set-piece catches Exeter asleep again, this time Luther Wildin turns the ball inside after losing his marker but Ken Aboh, the Norwich loanee, can only loop over the bar from close range.

What a chance that was. Surely the last chance.
