I asked him about the form of Granit Xhaka, the Swiss captain and former Arsenal midfielder, who has just won the German Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen after a historic campaign. Can he translate that form onto the international stage and inspire his side to success?

“He came here with more confidence - he has already a lot of confidence - but he came with even more,” said Shaqiri.

“I’m happy for him. You can see on the pitch he has even more confidence. He tries to push the players and I hope he can take this into the national team.”

Former Liverpool and Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri is due to speak to media this morning.

The media centre is branded in Swiss colours, with banners and red and white flags painted on the entrance walls. Outside is a quiet area with a few working offices next to the training pitch.

It’s only a few metres away from the nearest metro stop and about 10 minutes on public transport from the central train station.

All-in-all, a pleasant place to be, with the added bonus that there is free beer provided to the media! You might not hear from me again for a while…

"There’s no outside noise so the players can just focus on the job in hand, and that’s what Steve Clarke’s had in his mind since he picked this spot. This is where he wanted to be and it’s absolutely beautiful."

While United and Ten Hag both feel they can move forward now, there are some glaring issues which need to be addressed – including Ten Hag’s role in a revised structure that threatens to weaken his influence, summer transfers in and out of the club, and a new contract.
