Talking of forgotten men, Danilo scored for Rangers in their pre-season game against Barnsley at their St George's Park training centre down near Burton.

Fellow strikers Hamza Igamane, who is said to have had a Visa issue, and Cyriel Dessers, who has been injured, were again missing amid transfer speculation.

Striker Max Watters equalised for the English League One side.

While the competitive action gets under way at home, League Cup holders Celtic were in pre-season duty in Portugal this morning.

Brendan Rodgers' side lost 3-2 to Estrela da Amadora, who finished 15th of 18 sides in last season's Primeira Liga.

Forgotten man Marco Tilio set up Reo Hatate for the opening goal, while Adam Idah scored Celtic's equaliser at 2-2 in a match of many line-up changes at Benfica's training centre.

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley tells BBC Sportsound: "Both Ashley [Hay] and Tony Yogane can bring a lot to the team. Not just their ability but their robustness. The Scottish game is demanding. We've brought extra physicality in with Emile Acquah.

"We're making progress, both on and off the field just now. We're also very aware that this is going to take some time.

"I've obviously managed over 300 games, but I'm nervous. When you're nervous, you want things to go well."

The big news from New Douglas Park is that Lennon Miller is not in the Motherwell squad to face Clyde.

There has been speculation that the 18-year-old midfielder could be sold this summer after making his Scotland debut.

However, the official line is that Lennon's involvement is "being managed" by new manager Jens Berthel Askou and it is believed he picked up a slight knock in a pre-season friendly against Carlisle United.

Game of the day probably comes via the 17:15 kick-off as Derek McInnes makes his debut as Heart of Midlothian head coach at home to Neil Lennon's Dunfermline Athletic - a match that could be an early Group E decider.

Similary, top-flight Dundee host Championship side Airdrieonians in the Group C opener.

In Group H, Premiership sides Kilmarnock and promoted Livingston are both away from home - to Highland League champions Brora Rangers and League 1 newcomers East Fife respectively.

Top-flight Motherwell are away to League 2 side Clyde in Group G, while Championship winners Falkirk visit Highland League side Brechin City in Group A.

Meanwhile, Lowland League champions East Kilbride begin life as an SPFL club host St Johnstone.
