  1. Bournemouth, Forest and Newcastle should be happypublished at 23:18 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

So, all four English teams have made it through at least to the play-offs. Two German teams are out, an Italian side is out and also a Spanish side.

In addition, PSG are certain to get a French team in the play-off.

That fifth Champions League place next season is looking pretty good for the Premier League.

  2. 'Format probably not geared towards match going fans'published at 23:16 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

The format is probably not geared towards the match going fan.

I worked out that in the first half alone the top eight had changed at least five times, with teams dropping out.

I imagine that if you are a paying spectator it is probably not for you if you are trying to keep on top of it on your phone. Then again VAR is probably not either is it?

From a neutral's point of view it has been a success because the quality of games has improved and then there has been a sense of jeopardy throughout the night. I would imagine UEFA would be very pleased with how the format has been received.

What a great night of football. There will be no going back to the old format after this.

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sport works best when you keep it simple. When you keep it simple and people can understand it.

I just think this format is a little bit too complicated. It is kind of made for TV.

  5. 'It was sensational'published at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Ally McCoist
Former Rangers striker on TNT Sports

It was a little bit chaotic at times because there were goals going in everywhere.

I don't think I would be able to watch just the one game in my house, on my sofa, ever again.

    It was sensational!

  6. 'Not sold on enjoying the new format yet'published at 23:06 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Izzy Christiansen
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm not sold on enjoying this new format yet. I think I need a season still to get my head around it, to feel it out and make my judgement. There are pros and cons but I am not sold on it yet.

I am a sucker for the old format I watched growing up, the groups of four, the home and away games, going into the round of 16, quarter-finals and so on. That is how I have always thought of it. Maybe I am just scared of change.

    Man City 3-1 Club Brugge

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

Club Brugge boss Nicky Hayen is first into the press conference room at the Etihad Stadium.

He admits Manchester City deserved to win.

"We are really pleased at how we performed in the group phase," he said.

"In the first half we were really disciplined. We knew there was space at the back of the defenders but we made small mistakes in the second half and they punished us.

    "They deserved to win.

"Credit to the group. They executed the plan in the best way possible. We are ambitious. Now we play Dortmund or Atalanta. We can still improve."

  12. 'Massive deal for Villa to finish in top eight'published at 22:54 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    FT: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

A massive, massive deal for Villa to finish in the top eight.

You think about how they are trying to develop under Unai Emery and looking to compete on the domestic and European fronts, to get a top eight place is credit to the manager and the team.

The pressure was on them tonight against Celtic, and there was a little wobble before half time. But they got there in the end, Morgan Rogers was unplayable.

They can now put their feet up as the other teams go head to head in the play-off.

  13. 'Villa can't sell both Watkins and Duran'published at 22:52 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    FT: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

    Ally McCoist
Former Rangers striker on TNT Sports

You can't sell both. What a dilemma it is.

Emery is actually in a perfect position. He has two great strikers fighting for that position.

Of course, one of them wants away because he wants to play more.

  14. Emery on Duran futurepublished at 22:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    FT: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

    Aston Villa

More from Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on possible outgoings: "I don't know if Jhon Duran is leaving but if he is, it is good news for us because he is leaving because it is good money. It is for the club, the players and the team. I don't know if he will leave or not.

    "Watkins is our striker."

  15. 'Eventful game'published at 22:48 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    FT: PSV 3-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "It was an eventful game with many games and I think everyone expected that before the game."

On Federico Chiesa: "It has been seven, eight, nine months ago, maybe longer and it was important that he got the chance to play 90 minutes. It was important also that he could compete for 90 minutes, he was always sprinting and doing his work."

On Amara Nallo getting sent off just four minutes into his Champions League debut: "It is cruel but he has never played first team football before and to make your debut in the Champions League is probably the hardest.

"He misinterpreted the situation and it's a big moment to learn from. It is cruel when you think I'm making my Champions League debut but you go off a few minutes later.

"A career isn't always positive, it also has negatives and he has to make sure he plays in this competition again."

On James McConnell: "If I had been surprised that would mean he had not been at this level in training, but he has been competitive. I'm not surprised but you always wonder how they will react on this stage at this level. James deserves credit for his performance today."

    FT: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is no doubt that Celtic will go into a tie with either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich as massive underdogs, but they have earned the right to be in the play-offs.

I have been pleasantly suprised by them in this Champions League campaign. They have shown maturity and that they have made progress.

  18. 'The word that screams at me is pride'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    FT: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

    Celtic

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers speaking to TNT Sports: "The word that screams at me is pride. The game was right in the balance right through to extra-time. We had a really challenging start being two nil down. We started the game well but then we conceded the two goals. Second goal was a brilliant goal. Game was right in the balance until the end. Pride is my initial feeling.

"Spirit was absolutely key. There's no good team that doesn't possess a really strong spirit. We had a couple of moments in the second half where we could've relieved the pressure. It was a great effort.

On Adam Idah: "His job is to make runs. His movement into the box was good. He needs to get up to game speed. He was a handful for them. Two really good finishes.

On playing either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich: "It's what the players deserve for what they've given over the course of the eight games. For us to be in the position is great for them. Us and the supporters can enjoy what we've done.

  19. Emery on Watkins and Duran futurepublished at 22:42 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    FT: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to TNT, on whether Jhon Duran will leave the club: "Tomorrow or Friday we can talk about the transfer, or maybe next week, until everything is done I don't want to speak, because in football everything can happen. The club is working and trying to compete in the transfer window because we need some players. Some can leave, but it is not time to speak about it."

On Arsenal's bid for Ollie Watkins: "I know you want to ask about it, but I told you, today is not the day."
