  7. Fire at Man Citypublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Man City v Club Brugge (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

New signing Aemu Oyama was just talking to Man City fans outside the main entrance to the Etihad Stadium when the fire took hold to the left of the main entrance as you approach the ground.

Although it did appear to take a little bit of time before stewards and club officials realised what we going on, they quickly moved fans away from the affected area, cancelled the player presentation, which was due to include Vitor Reis, Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov a little bit later and let the fire brigade get on with their work.

They seemed to have the situation under control quite quickly, although there was a lot of smoke in the air.

As always, we want to hear from you!

What are your predictions for this evening? Are Manchester City going to get the job done, or are they heading for the exit? Who will join Liverpool, Barcelona and (probably) Arsenal in the top eight? Will it be Aston Villa? Celtic? Perhaps there'll even be a surprise package in there.

Feel free to also let us know what you have made of this new format. Has it been more exciting? More jeopardy? Enjoyed seeing some of the 'lower down' teams mixing it at the top of the table?

Don't forget to put your names on your messages!

  9. What happens next?published at 18:42 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

The tournament is mapped out a bit depending on where you finish in the table - well a 50-50 chance anyway.

So if it ends like it is now, the route to the final is in the graphic below.

There would be a draw on Friday to decide whether Juventus or Celtic played Bayern Munich - with the other one playing Real Madrid.

The winner of those ties would then play either Liverpool or Barcelona in the last 16 - but they won't know which until the last-16 draw on 21 February (after the play-off ties are over).

Man City v Club Brugge (20:00 GMT)

An update on the fire at Etihad Stadium.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just before 6pm this evening (Wednesday 29 January), two fire engines from Blackley and Philips Park fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving an outbuilding on the car park of the football ground on Rowsley Street, Manchester.

"Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire, they are currently dampening down any hotspots and making the area safe.

"Firefighters have been in attendance for around thirty minutes and are still at the scene."

As all 36 teams play their final league phase games in the Champions League, can Aston Villa or Celtic qualify automatically? And will Manchester City avoid a shock elimination?

Once the final standings are locked in this is how the play-off phase would shape up. Then the round of 16.

Ultimately it does matter where you finish in the table, even if that is in positions nine to 24.

  13. The key storylines to keep an eye onpublished at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    John Bennett
BBC reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are three storylines I am keen to follow. First is which of the top eight sides are going to slip up and give Aston Villa a chance? I'm looking at Inter v Monaco and AC Milan v Dinamo Zagreb. Then I am looking at the Portuguese clubs. Benfica are in danger, despite beating Atletico Madrid 4-0 and Sporting after matchday four were second and could still miss out.

Finally, we have talked about them a lot this season, Paris St-Germain. It has been a stressful campaign for them. A draw against Stuttgart should be enough but still a bit of stress for those fans.

  14. What about the other big teams in Europe?published at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Love it or loath it, this new Champions League format has thrown up some shocks and it's certainly not the top eight you might expect to see at this stage.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain and Juventus are all among the giants in the positions between ninth and 24th.

Barcelona have already secured their place in the top eight but Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen could all still drop into the play-off places.

    It's up for grabs, basically.

  15. What do the British teams need to progress?published at 18:24 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Media caption,

BBC Sport's Chris Collinson explains what teams need to qualify for the knockout stages.

The big story tonight is, of course, Manchester City.

It's simple really, beat Club Brugge and they qualify for the play-off round. Lose and they will be eliminated.

Aston Villa are guaranteed at least a play-off place.

A win at home to Celtic would give them a good chance of finishing in the top eight, though they would need one of five teams above them to slip up.

But even if they win, Villa could be overtaken by a big victory for any of the four sides currently below them on goal difference.

Celtic are only one point behind Villa so could conceivably finish in the top eight, but they would need to win and for a lot of things to happen above them.

Arsenal - away at Girona - are all but in the last 16 as they sit three points clear of the play-offs with a much better goal difference than any team on 13 points.

Liverpool are one of two teams, along with Barcelona, who know they are in the last 16 already, and will be guaranteed a top-two place.

  16. Which teams have qualified - and who is out?published at 18:21 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Top-eight guaranteed: Liverpool, Barcelona

Top-24 guaranteed (at least): Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Monaco, Feyenoord, Lille, Brest, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus, Celtic

Uncertain of progression: PSV, Club Brugge, Benfica, PSG, Sporting, Stuttgart, Manchester City, Dinamo Zagreb, Shakhtar Donetsk

Eliminated: Bologna, Sparta Prague, Leipzig, Girona, Red Star Belgrade, Sturm Graz, Salzburg, Slovan Bratislava, Young Boys

  17. How many teams qualify for the knockout phase?published at 18:18 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Right, a reminder of how this all works and what's up for grabs.

Those finishing in the top eight of the 36-team table automatically progress to the last 16, where they will be seeded.

They will await the winners of eight two-legged knockout play-off ties featuring the clubs ranked from ninth to 24th.

Those finishing between ninth and 16th will be seeded and face a team placed 17th to 24th, with the advantage of playing the second leg at home.

The clubs 25th or lower are eliminated and do not gain entry to the Europa League.

The play-off ties take place in mid-February, with the last-16 matches in the first two weeks of March.

It started to the left of the main entrance as City’s new women’s players were being presented on a stage. The three new male players were also due to be presented but the presentation was halted and the area has been evacuated.
