    BBC Sport football news reporter

Newcastle remain in talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for England defender Marc Guehi for between £65m and £70m.

But multiple sources involved worry that the Magpies are leaning towards walking away from this deal due to the price.

The decision ultimately rests with Palace chairman Steve Parrish to accept any offer amid final-stage talks.

The deal will need to either be agreed or collapse today so there is time for Newcastle to sign an alternative option, with RB Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan among those being discussed.

Wolfsburg centre-back Maxence Lacroix is set to sign for Crystal Palace in a deal worth up to £18m after completing his medical.

The 24-year-old has less than a year remaining on his contract and has been targeted by the Eagles throughout this window.

Palace have sold centre back Joachim Andersen to Fulham for a deal worth up to £30m and Marc Guehi is wanted by Newcastle.

This week centre back Chadi Riad, who joined Palace this summer from Barcelona, limped out of the win over Norwich in the Carabao Cup and that could leave manager Oliver Glasner with a selection headache ahead of the match against Chelsea at the weekend.

Frenchman Lacroix, who made 130 appearances for Wolfsburg since joining in 2020, has worked with Palace boss Glasner before when he was in charge of the German side.

    Red Star Belgrade 2-0 Bodo/Glimt (Agg: 3-2)

Red Star Belgrade managed to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg and knock out Norway's Bodo/Glimt.

Red Star forward Bruno Duarte levelled the tie through a 26th-minute penalty and captain Uros Spajic headed in a second goal for the Serbian champions just before the hour mark.

That denied the three-time Norwegian champions a debut in the main draw of the Champions League while Red Star, the European champions in 1991, progress to the league phase.

Kieran Trippier scored his only international goal in England's World Cup semi-final defeat at Russia 2018, opening the scoring before Croatia fought back to win 2-1 after extra time.

The 33-year-old former Burnley, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid defender, who made his debut under Gareth Southgate in 2017, went on to win 54 caps and captained his country three times.

He helped England reach the quarter-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was part of the team that made the final of the Euros in 2021 and played in six of the Three Lions' seven matches at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer, replaced by Luke Shaw in the starting line-up for the final defeat to Spain.

"I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps," Trippier wrote on Instagram.

"It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments.

"I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.

"Thank you to all my team mates - we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi-final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament."

Get Involved - Carabao Cup draw changespublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 29 August

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Roger, London: Lee (10:56) has misunderstood. In the new Champions League format, rounds will be played over two midweeks, not one. If two teams are drawn in opposite midweeks in Europe and also draw each other in the Carabao Cup, that leaves one with a fixture clash.

Karim, Essex: The Champions League and Europa League first round of league matches take place the same time as the third round of the Carabao Cup. Therefore, these teams can't play one another if they’re in European competition, so their ties have to be played against a team outside of European competition. Imagine Liverpool v Man City but Liverpool play their Champions League fixture on week commencing 16 September and Man City play their game w\c 23rd…When would they play the Carabao Cup game?

Shaun, Cambridge: Re: Lee (10:56) - there is no conspiracy, the seeding exists because of a Champions League team playing a Europa League team results in a clash. The seedings give more big v little matches, which is the magic of the cup. I would actually say extend League Cup to have full seedings. Let teams have proper sight of who they're going to play next so they can take it more seriously, and give lower teams a guaranteed match against top opposition. Teams don't prioritise it because they might just get a tough game next round. Importantly, differentiate it from the FA Cup to secure the competition's future.

Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic is joining RC Strasbourg on a season-long loan deal.

The 24-year-old Serbia keeper played 31 times under Mauricio Pochettino last season but will move on after Chelsea signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal last month.

Petrovic has, however, also penned a new contract on improved terms at Stamford Bridge before moving to the Strasbourg, the club owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's parent company BlueCo.

The Blues believe the move has Petrovic's long-term development in mind after signing him from New England Revolution for £14m last summer.

The two-time Serbia international will help strengthen undefeated Strasbourg, now led by English manager Liam Rosenior, in France's top flight.

Petrovic will be the third and final Chelsea player to join the club on loan, joining American defender Caleb Wiley and Brazil international Andrey Santos. Chelsea also sold winger Diego Moreira to the Ligue 1 club earlier this month.
