Get Involved - Salah's future at Liverpoolpublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 29 August

Whatever happens with Mo, there's no doubt we got his best years. Even if he leaves on a free next year we've had incredible value from him.

    Chris the Red

Re. Salah and Van Dijk - I've never understood why more players don't run their contracts down. If your services are worth £x million to another club do you want a big chunk of that to go as a transfer fee to your current club? Or do you want to take it all yourself? Seems an obvious inefficiency in the market.

As a neutral, I think Salah needs to be honest. He’ll run down his contract and can then command a higher wage when he eventually moves to Saudi. He should also think about a future in politics when his playing days are over.

As a free agent, Willian could move after the transfer deadline as long as there is space in squads to register him.

The 36-year-old winger has continued to stay in shape and believes he has “three or four years” left in him, saying: “I am feeling great physically and in two seasons at Fulham, I didn't have any problems at all, so I feel completely great.

“I am working in the gym to be in good shape but, of course, it is different from training every day and being ready inside a club. But I am doing all I can to be in good shape for my next club.

"I think my level physically and mentally is great. I think I can play for three or four years more - maybe until I am 40 years old! I feel motivated and at a high level."

He also praised Fulham and former manager Marco Silva for reviving his career after a tough spell at Corinthians.

"I only have good words to say about Fulham," he added. "It was an amazing two years and they treated me so well. I will always be thankful to them for opening the door to play in the Premier League again.

"The owners, people who work in the club, the guys and Marco Silva - he is a great coach and person."

Former Fulham and Chelsea winger Willian is open to another Premier League move as he insists he can play until he is 40.

The Brazil international, now 36, is a free agent after leaving Craven Cottage this summer when his contract expired.

When asked why he left Fulham and where he sees his future, Willian told BBC Sport: “I decided to leave Fulham much before the end of the season, in January or February. I had it in my mind that I would leave after speaking with my agent and family.

“I am looking at some options at the moment. I am thinking about possibilities in Europe, England, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the MLS - just not Brazil as an option for me.

"I am trying to see all the possibilities and think about making the right decision right now. I have some offers already and this is the key moment to decide my next challenge.”

    Leicester City

On Leicester City's account on X, the club said "congratulations on a monumental career".

Marc Albrighton made more than 300 appearances for Leicester, helping them win the Premier League in 2015-16 and the FA Cup in 2021.

The winger previously played more than 100 games for Aston Villa after coming through their youth ranks.

Marc Albrighton has announced his retirement at the age of 34.

The former Aston Villa winger spent 10 years with Leicester City, helping them to a hugely unexpected Premier League title win in 2016.

But he played just 12 times last term as the Foxes won promotion back to the top flight and was released by the club at the end of the season.

Ivan Toney moving to Saudi is completely the wrong move for him, except financially. What a waste of talent. Something has gone wrong here. Surely there are issues we are not aware of because there has been hardly any serious interest from Premier League clubs.

Goncalo Guedes scored his first two Wolves goals since January 2023 as they beat Burnley to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Portugal forward, who has had loan spells at Benfica and Villarreal since his last strike for Wolves against Liverpool, hooked in following a cross by Brazilian debutant Pedro Lima.

And Guedes added a second when he ran on to a Daniel Podence through-ball and clipped the ball past Clarets keeper Vaclav Hladky.

Wolves suffered a blow, though, as midfielder Boubacar Traore came off injured late in the first half.

That came on the day it emerged they are in advanced talks over a £21m move for Fluminense midfielder Andre, 23.

A controversial Keane Lewis-Potter goal and a second-half penalty save by Hakon Valdimarsson earned Brentford a narrow victory over League Two Colchester in the Carabao Cup second round.

Lewis-Potter slotted in Kevin Schade's cutback on the stroke of half-time, after Colchester defender Aaron Donnelly had gone to ground under the German winger's challenge in the build-up.

Colchester were given a golden opportunity to equalise when Frank Onyeka brought down Mandela Egbo inside the penalty area with 10 minutes remaining, but Valdimarsson guessed the right way to foil Jack Payne from the spot.

Brentford almost doubled their advantage in stoppage time, Myles Peart-Harris firing at Macey before Nathan Collins sent a header wide from Mathias Jensen's free-kick.

No issue with Salah's comments. He'll be 33 next year, so it also benefits Liverpool to 'wait and see'. I have no doubt he'll extend if he's still fit and firing, likewise for the club themselves re the extension. Sensible all round!

    Richard

I'd rather see Salah still playing for the Reds than not. If that means him going for free as a 33-year-old, so be it, but if they can get him to sign for a another year or more, before he semi-retires to Saudi, even better. Still one of the very best players around!

Salah is an LFC and Prem legend. He's been worth the money 10 times over. If this is his last year (and I think he could do a job until he's 40 by the way), then I hope he enjoys it!

  11. Saints edge eight-goal thrillerpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 29 August

    Cardiff City 3-5 Southampton

    Ian Mitchelmore

Southampton scored twice in injury time to book their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a thrilling win over Championship side Cardiff City in south Wales.

Debutant Mateus Fernandes put the Premier League outfit ahead before Rubin Colwill - fresh from being omitted from the Wales squad - levelled with a thumping hit in front of national team boss Craig Bellamy.

Sam Amo-Ameyaw restored Southampton's lead with his first senior goal, although Ronnie Edwards' own goal early on in the second half made it 2-2.

Cameron Archer then notched his first goal since joining Southampton from Aston Villa to put the Saints ahead again, with substitute Alex Robertson equalising with a fine volley just two minutes later.

But James Bree and Archer both struck in additional time as Russell Martin's side edged a thriller in the Welsh capital.

Poor old Kalvin Phillips, he just can't seem to catch a break.

The midfielder barely got a game at Manchester City, had a dreadful debut on loan at West Ham and ended the season on the bench.

The 28-year-old made his debut for Ipswich last night after joining them on loan but was taken off on 66 minutes with the newly-promoted Premier League side trailing Wimbledon 2-1.

Ipswich equalised but League Two Wimbledon then won on penalties.

AFC Wimbledon stunned Premier League new boys Ipswich Town on penalties to reach round three of the Carabao Cup.

Conor Chaplin headed a late equaliser for Ipswich to force a penalty shootout, but the Dons clinched it 4-2 after Owen Goodman saved from Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson.

Ali Al-Hamadi gave Town a third-minute lead against his former side with a free header from Conor Townsend’s corner before Omar Bugiel nodded in Jake Reeves' free-kick to equalise before the break.

Matty Stevens rose highest in a crowded goalmouth to head the Dons ahead before Chaplin headed in with just four minutes left.

After defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City in a daunting start to their Premier League return, Ipswich failed to lift their season as Isaac Ogundere struck the winning penalty to send the fourth-tier Dons into dreamland.

The EFL Cup third-round seeded draw for the top six clubs in Europe - designed to avoid fixture clashes - doesn’t make sense. All six sides in Europe will still have to play a full game regardless of who they draw, and all it’s done is guaranteed big sides will avoid one another and be given a far easier route to the next round - defeating the beauty of the competition. Sounds to me more like an excuse, blanketed in reason.

  15. Hammers progress after fortunate winnerpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 29 August

    West Ham 1-0 Bournemouth

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport

West Ham moved into the third round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a dramatic late win over fellow Premier League side Bournemouth.

In the 88th minute, and with the game heading to a penalty shootout, the Hammers scored a fortunate winner as Mohammed Kudus' shot bounced off Jarrod Bowen and past Cherries goalkeeper Neto.

The Bournemouth coaching staff felt the ball had hit Bowen's arm, but with the video assistant referee (VAR) system not in use, the goal was allowed to stand, much to the visitors' frustration.

Andoni Iraola's side had been on the wrong end of a controversial VAR handball decision at the weekend when Dango Ouattara was denied a potential late winner in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

At London Stadium, Bournemouth will also be left wondering how they exited the competition as the best chances fell to the visitors.

Sandro Tonali made his comeback after a 10-month suspension as Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest on penalties in the Carabao Cup.

Sean Longstaff scored the winning spot-kick after Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed efforts for Forest.

Italy midfielder Tonali, who served his long ban for breaching betting rules, played 60 minutes at the City Ground before being replaced.

Joe Willock gave the Magpies the lead after just 18 seconds, hooking in a rebound after Forest debutant Carlos Miguel parried Alexander Isak's shot.

Willock then went off with what looked to be a thigh injury and Forest levelled through Jota Silva's wonderful half-volley which flew in via the woodwork.

Dan Burn, Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon all had chances to win the game for the Magpies before it went to penalties. And although Joelinton saw his spot-kick saved by Miguel, all his team-mates converted theirs.

  18. What was different about this year's third-round draw?published at 10:37 British Summer Time 29 August

This year's third-round Carabao Cup draw was the first since the EFL announced changes to the drawing format.

Like in previous years, the top-seven teams from the previous season's Premier League were given byes to the third round.

However, because of the expansion of the Champions League and Europa League for the 2024-25 season, the EFL created a two-pot system to avoid fixture clashes for teams competing in Europe.

It meant, for the first time, there was a seeding system in place for the draw.

The first pot included the six teams that are competing in the Champions League and Europa League this season - Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United.

The second pot included the other 26 teams that made it through to the third round.

Teams in the first pot could not draw one another in the third round and they were pre-drawn in order to determine if they would play at home or away.

The first six teams drawn from pot two were then selected to play against one of the teams drawn from pot one.

Liverpool will begin their defence of the Carabao Cup at home to West Ham in the third round.

The game at Anfield is one of three all-Premier League encounters, with Everton hosting Southampton and Brighton welcoming Wolves.

League Two side Barrow's reward for reaching the third round for the first time since 1967-68 is a trip to beaten 2024 finalists Chelsea, while AFC Wimbledon - who defeated Premier League Ipswich on penalties in the second round - will host Newcastle.

Arsenal host Bolton Wanderers, with Manchester United welcoming Barnsley. Championship Watford visit Manchester City while Aston Villa and Tottenham have been handed trips to Wycombe and Coventry, respectively.

Ties will take place in the weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.
