Extra precautions are being taken to ensure the new-look Champions League draw later today is not wrecked by a cyber attack.

Uefa is changing the format of all three club competitions this season.

Instead of a 32-team group phase, featuring groups of four, 36 teams will qualify for the main phase, which will involve a single table with each club being given eight different opponents in the Champions League and Europa League, and six in the Conference League.

The top eight sides go straight through to the last-16, the teams finishing ninth to 24th will go into a play-off and the bottom eight will be eliminated. Once the current qualification phase is over, teams will not play in more than one competition.

The actual draw procedure will be done through detailed computer software, rather than the previous system of balls being drawn from bowls. Uefa estimates if it had retained that system it would have required over 1000 balls and taken over four hours to conduct the draw.

Instead, a ball will be drawn to identify a club, starting in pot one, and that club’s eight opponents will be allocated at random by computer, with two to be played – one home, one away - from each pot of nine teams, which will be determined in order of merit by Uefa's club coefficient table. Uefa believes the time taken for the draw will remain at around 35 minutes.

While many global companies have been subject to cyber attacks, David Gill, the chief technology officer of AE Live, who are responsible for the system Uefa will use, feels they have taken all necessary precautions.

“Cyber security is something we all have to deal with and take extremely seriously as a business,” he said.

“There are a number of protections we have in place in order to ensure we are safe and secure. The draw itself will be conducted in an entirely closed environment so there will be no external access from external interference.

“Access to our code is controlled through multi-factoral authentication and a very limited amount of people have access to our code. As a business, we conduct regular penetration testing and we have done additional risk assessments around cyber attacks because we are raising our head above the parapet.”

Who stays in? Who might lose their place? Any leftfield call-ups? Which players may be handed a different role? Will any former stars earn a recall?

So many questions for England's interim manager Lee Carsley as he prepares to announce the first squad of his tenure today at 14:00 BST.

The 50-year-old has said it is important that he puts his "own stamp" on the squad before Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month.

They also start their World Cup qualifiers next year so these games are important for the group to develop.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is not concerned about complacency despite his side holding a two-goal lead for the second leg of their Conference League qualifying play-off in Switzerland against Servette.

The Blues won the first-leg tie 2-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke.

But Maresca said his players know they still have to finish the job to make the group phase.

"It will be a tough game, I don't have any doubts," he added. "I don’t think complacency will be an issue after just one or two wins in a row. We need to be ready and motivated 100%, for sure. The target is to try to get a good result and go forward to the group.

"Games you win at home and think it is almost done, but it's not like this. Especially not on this pitch, in this environment. So we need to be absolutely ready."

  7. Sterling & Chilwell 'will not get minutes' if they stay at Chelseapublished at 07:46 British Summer Time 29 August

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has told Raheem Sterling and the other members of his squad who are yet to be involved this season that they "will not get any minutes" if they stay at the club.

Speaking before tonight's Uefa Conference League play-off second leg against Servette, Maresca repeated his stance that Sterling, England left-back Ben Chilwell and the other players he has frozen out from the team so far will not play for him.

"I prefer to be honest with players," he said. "The ones who are not involved are not going to be involved and they won't get any minutes if they stay.

"I don't know what happens when the window closes if they are still here. The ones who will get minutes are the ones I think can help us.

"Raheem is a fantastic guy who has trained very well. Every manager has a different idea and he is the kind of winger that is not one that I like. History and numbers speak for Raheem. He knows exactly what he needs to do.

"The rest are training apart, they are not going to get minutes. I have been clear and honest with them."
