Teenage wing-back Ben Brannan's stunning looping volley helped Kilmarnock recover from two goals down to draw with high-flying Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.

David Gray's Hibs side started with all the momentum you would expect from a famous European victory, having beaten Partizan Belgrade 2-0 on Thursday night in Serbia in the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualifier.

They made a few changes for "freshness" according to the head coach, and they looked anything but tired as they flew out the blocks.

From a free-kick near the byeline, Jamie McGrath fizzed a cross to the back post where Rocky Bushiri rose to head Hibs in front.

The hosts were flowing forward to create chances at will and they soon made it 2-0, when Junior Hoilett and Elie Youan played a one-two with the latter slotting under the keeper.

Hibs looked comfortable but just before half-time, Killie striker Marcus Dackers turned two defenders to get to the byeline, cutting back for Liam Polworth to slot home.

That goal buoyed the visitors and they were well worth their second goal, a stone-cold stunner from young Brannan. A corner was headed away but only as far as Brannan, who volleyed an arcing shot brilliantly over the keeper and into the corner from 25 yards.

What was the main talking point?

Four goals in your first five games for the first team would be great for any player - let alone an 18-year-old right-back, playing out of position.

Brannan has had the start of his dreams at Kilmarnock, breaking into the first team during the summer and scoring three during the Premier Sports Cup campaign.

That led to him signing a new three-year deal last week, and now he has repaid that faith shown in him by scoring a goal-of-the-season contender on the second weekend of the new campaign.

It was a technically fantastic strike, reminiscent of that Joe Cole goal scored for England against Sweden in the 2006 World Cup.

He watched it all the way onto his foot, weighted it perfectly, and struck it sweetly. If he never scores a finer strike, it would be no surprise.

Stuart Kettlewell has challenged him to become a first-team regular this season. Right now, he is undroppable.

Which players stood out?

Kilmarnock's youngsters - Brannan, David Watson and Ethan Brown. The latter was particularly impressive, given it was his debut and his first appearance at this level.

He was up against Kieron Bowie, who has bullied European defenders already this season, but Brown kept him relatively quiet.

Marcus Dackers was also superb up top, setting up the first goal and being a general nuisance with his hold up play. Superb feet for a very big man.

The standout stats

  • Hibernian dominated the xG stats - 1.85 as compared to Kilmarnock's 0.92.

  • Hibs had 28 dribbles, while Killie only had 14. But only 36% of Hibs' were successful while Killie's were successful 64% of the time.

What is next for these teams?

Hibernian host Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night at Easter Road, in the second leg of their Conference League third round qualifier. They have a 2-0 lead going into that.

Meanwhile, Kilmarnock take on Dundee United in the League Cup next Sunday.

What they said

Hibernian head coach David Gray told BBC Scotland: "It was certainly, in terms of our level, a game of two halves.

"First half, very good. Started very well, a lot of good play within that. But we lost a goal just before half time through a lack of concentration.

"Second half, we were nowhere near the level we were. The second goal is a wonderstrike, but we needed to be better in how we reacted.

"It's a bit of everything - big moments in games, the momentum shifts, your opponent gets confidence from that. We gave them confidence with individual errors, created anxiety in situations. A lot of the chances we gave up were self-inflicted."

Kilmarnock manager Stuart Kettlewell told BBC Scotland: "[Brannan's strike] will be spoken about for quite some time. It's some strike, it's unbelievable. We had some other real good moments and spooked Hibs at the back.

"The goal aside, Ben is 18. We gave him his debut, we knew he was talented. I'll not get carried away, he's playing out of position, and he's embraced the whole situation. He's taken everything in his stride and you need that emotional intelligence to give yourself a chance."
