  2. 'Perception and reality are often far apart in football'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 24 October

Manchester City v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Southampton

Southampton manager Russell Martin says his relationship with the club's owners is still "really good" and his conversations with the club's hierarchy have been "great", after a difficult start to managing in the Premier League.

"They have been great," Martin revealed. "Perception and reality are often very far apart in football. A lot of people made up that it was 'do or die' against Leicester City and that I would be sacked if we lost, but I'm still here.

"I have a really good relationship with the owners. We are trying to grow and build something, which is what we have done over the last 16 months or so. I will continue to do that with the best of my ability, with the same love and care that I have shown in the time that I've been here.

"Until I'm told otherwise, I will do that."

  3. 'We are showing we are a capable outfit'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 24 October

    Everton v Fulham (Sat,17:30 BST)

    Everton

Everton boss Sean Dyche says their recent run of results has created "a good feeling around the group," with them hopefully turning a corner.

"We’ve found ourselves in a better position on the pitch and with injuries," said Dyche. "That sharpness has helped and we’ve found a way to get results.

"There seems to have always been a cloud over Everton on and off the pitch since I arrived. But getting points gives a better feel to it all and to me included. It is a real knock when you’re not winning games but it builds resilience and that is why I’m sat here doing what I do.

"We are showing we are a capable outfit and we can win games in the Premier League.

"There’s certainly a good feeling around the group at the minute."

  4. Southampton team news: Smallbone out, Sugawara a doubtpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 24 October

Manchester City v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Southampton

Southampton manager Russell Martin confirmed that central midfielder Will Smallbone will be out "for a little bit of time" with an injury, describing it as "really frustrating and disappointing" for the player and for the club.

Yukinari Sugawara has been "managed" in training this week, after coming off the pitch with an injury against Leicester City. Martin confirmed that the right-back will continue to be monitored for the next 24 hours to determine whether he will be available to start against Manchester City.

  5. Toffees team newspublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 24 October

    Everton v Fulham (Sat,17:30 BST)

    Everton

Sean Dyche told the media Jarrad Branthwaite is "certainly" available for Saturday's game, with the Everton boss confirming it was his decision to rule the centre-back out of last weekend's match to give him an extra week of training.

Jesper Lindstrom has also recovered from illness.

But elsewhere, Dyche said they are currently waiting for an update from the specialists on James Garner's back injury and Youssef Chermiti and Tim Iroegbunam will remain side lined for a number of weeks with their respective problems.

Summer signing Armando Broja is "on the edge of coming back to training" and Dele Alli "is just getting back on the grass again after another minor injury."

  6. Wolves sporting director Hobbs charged by the FApublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 24 October

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association.

The charge comes after Wolves were unhappy with John Stones' injury-time winner in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

The defender's header was awarded by referee Chris Kavanagh after initially being disallowed because Bernardo Silva was standing in an offside position.

The FA has already written to boss Gary O'Neil to ask for his observations following his comments about officials after the match.

An FA statement read: "Matt Hobbs allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive words towards the match official/s around the tunnel area after the final whistle. He has until Monday, 28 October, to respond."

This picture doesn't really do justice to the scene I encountered on a quick stroll around my hotel just now.

I am about 20 minutes' walk from the stadium and it was just under six hours before kick-off.

This bar was packed with fans singing songs - soon to be joined by another lot heading down the narrow street.

There were plenty of firecrackers going off - which a cat nearby didn't appreciate as it scurried off.

It is not really a surprise but I expect it will be quite an atmosphere this evening. Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen said last night he enjoys it. He will need to.

  8. Europa League - how it stands and how it workspublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 24 October

Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt are currently joint-top of the Europa League table with seven points from three games, although only two other teams have also played three games so far.

FCSB are one of five teams level on six points having won both their opening games, including Premier League side Tottenham.

The top eight come the end of the league phase will qualify for the last 16 automatically and Ajax currently occupy the eighth spot. The Dutch giants are one of seven teams to have taken four points from two games, including Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce.

Rangers are a point further back in 17th place, while Manchester United are 21st with two points so far. Teams from ninth to 24th place will go through to a two-legged play-off to decide the final eight teams in the last 16.

Forward Zak Lovelace, 18, is in Rangers' squad but the game comes too soon for left-back Ridvan Yilmaz, despite the Turkish defender returning to training.

Oscar Cortes and Rabbi Matondo are injured and, although Danilo and Ianis Hagi featured for the B team on Tuesday, neither are in Rangers' Europa League squad.

Rangers go into the game 17th in the new-look Europa League table, with one win and one defeat from their two games so far, while FCSB are sixth having beaten Rigas FS and PAOK Salonika.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement signals towards his playersImage source, PA Media

Manager Philippe Clement is urging Rangers fans to keep faith with him and says he is "200% confident" his team is on the right track.

The Ibrox side lost at Kilmarnock on Sunday, leaving them six points behind leaders Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.

Clement, whose side host FCSB of Romania in the Europa League on Thursday, had guided his team to the top of the table in late February.

However, five domestic defeats contributed to missing out on the Premiership title and Scottish Cup to Celtic, while four losses this campaign have hindered their domestic and European ambitions.

"The fans will see that we’ll be better," Clement said. "The people who’re unhappy now, I understand but I’m working even harder than I was before."

Clement was the third Rangers managerial appointment in less than two years when he replaced Michael Beale a year ago and believes stability is "the only way".

"Not just here but in clubs all over Europe and the world," the Belgian added. "If you change ideas every three months, six months, or every year, there’s no consistency. You need one process with everyone going in the same direction.

"That’s crucial. Otherwise there will always be ups and downs. If you go with the motion of the day, or one or two results, then you can never create consistency.

"Last season, all the fans were behind the story. They were really happy. I didn’t go with the hype of that moment. I also don’t go with the drama now. There’s a big space in between and we are in that space. I believe so much in this club and its potential."

  11. Are Spurs moving on from Maddison?published at 14:31 British Summer Time 24 October

Tottenham v AZ Alkmaar (20:00 BST)

James Maddison stats comparison 2023-24 to 2024-25

The dart celebration. The beaming smile. The silky football that characterised the start of 2023-24 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This time last year it would have seemed barely believable that people might be questioning James Maddison's place in Ange Postecoglou's side.

But after his half-time substitution for (defensive?) midfielder Pape Sarr launched an enterprising second-half display to thrash West Ham on Saturday, the vice captain's status as an automatic starter has to be up for debate.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Maddison has still started all of Spurs' Premier League games this season and, while he had been subbed off in all of them, before Saturday the earliest he had left the field was the 77th minute.

In 40 appearances for Tottenham, he has 19 goal contributions - essentially one every other game - with six goals and 13 assists.

Tottenham v AZ Alkmaar (20:00 BST)

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou said that Son Heung-min would "sit out" Thursday's tie at home to AZ Alkmaar in Wednesday's news conference.

Son returned from injury for Saturday's 4-1 win over West Ham.

  13. 'It was the loudest I'd heard Villa Park, it was an incredible atmosphere'published at 14:26 British Summer Time 24 October

    Stephen Warnock Q&A banner

I loved you at Villa, what was your favourite moment there? The 6-4 v Blackburn?

We won 1-0 in the first leg of the Carling Cup, as it was then, then we went back to our place and went 2-0 down quite quickly. But I managed to score a goal. It was a bit of a strange occasion because I loved my time at Blackburn and in the semi-final, I didn't know how to celebrate, whether to celebrate, so I thought 'I'm just going to run back to the halfway line and not do anything'.

It was one of those moments where I'd never heard Villa Park like that. It was the loudest I'd heard it, the flags were out, it was an incredible atmosphere. It's very difficult to pin down any one moment but that was arguably one of the standout occasions.

There was also my debut, which was a derby at Birmingham. We won the game with a goal late on and I think I realised the magnitude of the club from that moment, straight away. I knew Villa was a big club but sometimes you don't realise just how big until you get through the door and get inside the club, you go to away games and start to feel that pressure. You want to get off to the best possible start, and we did that with a clean sheet away from home against our bitter rivals, so that was a really nice moment as well.

Ahead of Thursday's match in Istanbul, Erik ten Hag admitted that Manchester United will struggle to cope with any more injuries.

"Hopefully we won't get any more injuries, otherwise we will be short," he said.

"It is never easy but we have to deal with it and we will deal with it.

"We have to cover many games in a short time and we will do that the best as possible. Players like to play football so as long as you have enough players available to construct a team, it's best to play."

Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are still out, while £52m defender Leny Yoro has returned to training but won't be available for another few weeks.

Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire could return next week.

Everyone is super critical of Mourinho at United but I honestly think he's been the best manager there since Fergie. He said finishing 2nd with that team was his greatest ever achievement. We ridiculed him at the time, but in hindsight he was speaking in complete sense. I think he should have been treated with more respect considering the impossible job he did with a decaying team.

Jose Mourinho had a spiky relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson when they were in charge of Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

The pair get on well these days, and this week Mourinho spoke about United's decision toend Ferguson's ambassadorial rolewith the club at the end of the season.

"He is amazing, incredible. When my Netflix documentary comes out, you will know why I have so much respect," he said.

"I don't know the situation, it doesn't matter why or what. He has the love and respect of every Man United fan around the world. That is more important than the ambassadorial role or money he doesn't need."

Mourinho was supportive of his opposite number Erik ten Hag, although he didn't miss the chance to take a dig at Manchester United.

Ten Hag is under pressure; his side took eight points from their opening seven league games, their worst ever start to a Premier League season. United bosses have publicly supported their manager this season.

Mourinho argued he did not receive the same backing. He said: "What happened for sure, because it's very objective, is they keep faith in the coach, they support the coach, the coach is staying season after season and that means stability, it means trust, and they are giving him conditions to keep developing his job. That was different in relation to me."

Re Nic from Reading 13:21. Mourinho should never have been allowed through the front door at OT. Shocking decision to hire him, and awful to watch. Why the English press still hang on every word he says is beyond me.
