    Man City 5-0 Sparta Prague

Manchester City have set a new record for unbeaten games in the history of the European Cup and Champions League, going 26 without defeat (W18 D8) and breaking the record set by rivals Manchester United between 2007 and 2009 (a run of 25).

Of course, City were knocked out of last season's Champions League on penalties by Real Madrid, but their last defeat in normal or extra-time was that late collapse away to Real in May 2022, when the Spanish giants knocked them out of the 2021-22 semi-finals.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that Erling Haaland had a playful moan about coming off as the Norway striker was on a hat-trick.

Guardiola also joked that he might play John Stones up front if Haaland is ever ruled out after the England defender scored his second goal in four days - and third of the season.

Savinho delivered the cross for Erling Haaland's first goal but as Steph Houghton explained on the Champions League Match of the Day show, the Brazilian winger was "crucial" to Manchester City breaking down the Sparta Prague defence.

From certain angles Haaland's first goal does look amazing but descriptions of it being a back-heeled volley are slightly over the top. It was audacious but at the same time scrappy.

You don’t even try it! That is the unusual thing. You might do something stupid in training when you are mucking around, but to do it in a serious manner like [Erling Haaland] did – because there was intent there and he did mean to do it – it was like a backheel scissor kick in a crazy way.

But he does things like that, he always surprises you. I’m really pleased for him. He is a fantastic player, a great goalscorer and he didn’t actually have that much to do, but when he does do that he has a big impact. How he impacts games is with goals and that is what he does - there is no-one better.

He excites people because you know he is going to score goals. You look at the next game and think, what records is he going to break now? Who is he going to surpass now? And that is the beauty of it with a player like Haaland. He is young and you know he has time to go and break records.

  7. Haaland's 'extraordinary' finish - special or scrappy?published at 08:34 British Summer Time 24 October

    Man City 5-0 Sparta Prague

Erling Haaland doubled Manchester City's lead against Sparta Prague with an "unorthodox" and "extraordinary" backheel volley.

A couple of our colleagues here have suggested he merely bundled it in though. So where do you stand?

Hit thumbs up for special, thumbs down for scrappy.

  8. Haaland inspires dominant winpublished at 08:27 British Summer Time 24 October

Erling Haaland produced a moment of brilliance to help Manchester City maintain their unbeaten record in this season's Champions League with victory against Sparta Prague at Etihad Stadium.

After being denied a couple of times by visiting goalkeeper Peter Vindahl, Haaland struck midway through the second half when he cleverly turned in Savinho's cross with an acrobatic backheel volley.

Even Haaland looked surprised at the finish he had produced but it gave Pep Guardiola's side some much-needed breathing space after struggling to put away chances following Phil Foden's third-minute strike.

The England forward's clinical finish into the bottom corner hinted at City going on to record a big win, but after Vindahl had superbly denied Haaland's header and a second for Foden, they had to settle for a one-goal lead at half-time.

Haaland's memorable strike sparked City into gear after the break and John Stones, who got the winner against Wolves at the weekend, added a third with a thumping header.

Haaland then got his second of the game with a curled finish to take his Champions League goal tally to 44 at just 24 years old.

The hosts then rounded off the win with a fifth in the final few minutes as Matheus Nunes slammed home a penalty for his first Champions League goal.

  9. David fires Lille to famous winpublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 24 October

    Atletico Madrid 1-3 Lille

Substitute Jonathan David scored twice to give Lille a 3-1 win at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The visitors were awarded a controversial penalty in the 71st minute when Koke appeared to make light contact with Benjamin Andre's foot in the hosts' box.

Despite protests from Atletico's players and a video assistant referee (VAR) review, the referee stuck with his decision and David calmly converted from the spot to give Lille a 2-1 lead.

The Canada forward put the French side out of reach when his 89th-minute shot took a deflection to wrongfoot Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez had opened the scoring in the eighth minute when he pounced on a mistake from Ousmane Toure, who hesitated on the ball before selling short a backpass.

But Edon Zhegrova pulled the French side level after an hour with a brilliant left-footed curl that looped over the head of Oblak.

The result leaves Lille with six points following their impressive 1-0 victory over Atletico's rivals Real Madrid earlier this month.

Diego Simeone's side, meanwhile, have won just one of their three Champions League outings this season and they will face another stern test when they travel to Ligue 1 leaders Paris St-Germain on 6 November.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is the first manager to win as many as 11 of his first 12 games in charge across all competitions in English top-flight history.

  12. 'Players like Salah know they can't go all in, all of the time'published at 07:57 British Summer Time 24 October

    RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool

    Pat Nevin
Former Everton winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Liverpool will have to play better than they did at Leipzig. To play Arsenal, at their ground (Sunday, 16:30 GMT), they're very tough, so Liverpool will have to step up from Leipzig, but I think they know that.

When Liverpool got a bit of a fright after about 25 minutes, suddenly bang, they went up through the gears. That's another thing about good sides, they still have gears to go through, and know when they have to go through them.

Players like Mohamed Salah, they know that, if they go all in, all of the time, they won't last the season. You didn't the best of Salah at Leipzig, I suspect you might see the best of him against Arsenal, and he's not the only one you can say that about.

Liverpool are improving and will improve more, but their biggest test of the season [so far] will be Sunday.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his side's performance after they maintained their 100% start to this season's Champions League campaign.

  14. 'Liverpool are doing just about enough'published at 07:43 British Summer Time 24 October

    RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool

    Pat Nevin
Former Everton winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

A team that goes on that sort of run, you'd think they were being absolutely brilliant all the time. Liverpool fans understand that's not the case, and it hasn't been the case all this season.

Liverpool were probably slightly the better team, but had Leipzig equalised, you wouldn't really have argued against it because they created chances.

Liverpool are doing just about enough. Not every player is playing brilliantly but you know there is a lot more to come. Good teams win when playing way short of their best. Liverpool are doing that and they're doing that early in [Arne] Slot's tenure.

The hope is that it clicks into gear for Liverpool. But the other thing to remember is that, with the increase in the amount of games, you can't be 100%, 100% of the time. You need to be able to game manage, which Liverpool are doing well, but they're carrying a wee bit of luck as well.

  15. Liverpool continue bright Slot startpublished at 07:36 British Summer Time 24 October

    RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool

    Neil Johnston
    BBC Sport

Liverpool's strong start under Arne Slot continued as Darwin Nunez's goal extended their 100% winning record in the Champions League.

Nunez marked his fourth start under Slot with a 27th-minute finish from close range against RB Leipzig as the Reds made it 11 wins out of 12 in all competitions for their Dutch manager.

Uruguay forward Nunez turned in a fine shift. As well as touching home Mohamed Salah's header for the decisive moment of the game, he went close to a second goal before half-time when his header was tipped over the crossbar by former Liverpool reserve goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Gulacsi also denied Virgil van Dijk after the defender was left unmarked at a corner.

Liverpool produced a controlled performance in Germany and looked to have won a penalty when Nunez, who was a real menace, was clipped by Willi Orban in the 38th minute only for the officials to wave away the visiting team's protests.

There were one or two anxious moments for the Reds before Liverpool were able to celebrate an eighth straight win in all competitions.

At 0-0, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher had been almost embarrassed when a weak headed clearance after charging off his line led to a chance for Benjamin Sesko whose curled attempt dropped just wide.

Kelleher made amends with smart saves to keep out Sesko and Xavi Simons.

RB Leipzig also had two goals ruled out for offside, but Liverpool showed good game management to get over the line and leave themselves in a strong position before Champions League home games against Bayer Leverkusen - managed by former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso - and record 15-time winners Real Madrid.

This win means Liverpool join Premier League rivals Aston Villa with three wins out of three in European football's top club competition.

  16. Raphinha at the treble for 100th appearancepublished at 07:29 British Summer Time 24 October

    Barcelona 4-1 Bayern Munich

Raphinha's hat-trick heroics were praised by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick post-match.

The boss said: I"’ve never had a player like Raphinha, because he’s incredibly dynamic both with and without the ball. Every single team needs him, but we have him."

  17. Barca win built around midfieldpublished at 07:22 British Summer Time 24 October

    Barcelona 4-1 Bayern Munich

    Joe Rindl
    BBC Sport

Barcelona humiliated Bayern Munich in their 4-1 Champions League win on Wednesday night, in large part thanks to three "exceptional" young midfielders.

While Raphinha will rightly get plaudits for his superb hat-trick, Barcelona's win was built off Marc Casado, Pedri and Fermin Lopez's tireless work in the middle.

All three are just 21 years old, while two of them are fortunate to even be in the side.

"If Barcelona had the money, they'd have Bernardo Silva, they would have kept Ilkay Gundogan and those two would have played," Spanish football expert Guillem Balague told the BBC MOTD Champions League Highlights show.

"Those who are injured like Gavi, Andreas Christensen and Frenkie de Jong would have played ahead of two of these three. Only Pedri would be in the line-up."

Instead, it is Casado and Lopez who are partnering Pedri and slowly becoming household names.

Having kept Bayern's experienced trio of Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich and Joao Palhinha - who have 21 league titles between them - at bay, Barcelona may have stumbled on the perfect midfield three.

  18. Raphinha hat-trick overcomes Bayernpublished at 07:16 British Summer Time 24 October

    Barcelona 4-1 Bayern Munich

    Joe Rindl
    BBC Sport

Barcelona winger Raphinha scored a superb hat-trick as his side demolished Bayern Munich in the Champions League league phase.

Raphina opener the scoring inside the first minute after latching on to a ball over the top and rounding goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

England captain Harry Kane equalised for the visitors by volleying in Serge Gnabry's cross at the back post in the 18th minute.

But Barcelona continued to punish Bayern's ineffective high line with Fermin Lopez sent through and poking the ball past Neuer to set Robert Lewandowski up for the host's second 18 minutes later.

On the stroke of half-time captain for the night Raphinha made it 3-1 with a fabulous curling finish from the edge of the box.

And shortly after the restart he completed his hat-trick, latching on to another long ball and firing a shot into the far corner.
