  1. Atalanta draw 'gigantic' for Celticpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 24 October

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on Football Daily

With four points after three games, Pat Nevin believes Celtic are in a good position to reach the Champions League knock-outs.

"This game was so pivotal after that [7-1] defeat to Dortmund. Remember: Celtic won their first game against Slovan Bratislava 5-1. When you look at it now, a point away from home at Atalanta is a really good result.

"Look at who they've got coming up now. Their next game is Leipzig, that's not beyond them. Club Brugge at Celtic Park, that's not beyond them. They've got Young Boys, not beyond them. Celtic are actually not in that bad of a position just now.

"That result tonight has given them everything they needed. They were under pressure, they needed to hang on, but that was gigantic for Celtic. The next two games at Celtic Park will be great, and - I promise you - will have among the best atmospheres in the Champions League.

Haaland's goal is just try and make contact and hope for the best, as you can see by the way he scuffs it into the floor. The laws on the whole "dangerous play" thing need looking at too, if a defender puts his head there presumably Haaland gets a red.

  3. Supercomputer predicts English clubs will hold top three spots in group stagepublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 24 October

A supercomputer has predicted the top three spots of the Champions League group stage table will be held by English clubs after all the fixtures are played.

It says Liverpool will hold the top spot with Manchester City in second and Aston Villa third.

    Villa currently hold top spot.

Haaland's goal was certainly unorthodox, but surely too much is being made of it. Why? He simply stretched to get any part of his body to the ball. Hardly goal of the season material!

  5. Can you see anyone but an English or Spanish side winning the Champions League?published at 11:15 British Summer Time 24 October

    Stephen Warnock Q&A banner

Pat, Liverpool fan: Good morning Stephen. This new Champions League format has been quite exciting so far in my opinion. However, can you see anyone but an English or Spanish side winning this season's Champs League?

Stephen: I'm still getting used to the format, but it's actually easier looking at a league table and not a load of groups. You know exactly where you stand and what section you need to be in, so from that point of view it's not a bad thing. My only concern is, will you get dead rubbers towards the end, like we did with the group stages? But the last couple of games, you could get some incredible ones because teams will know what they need to get into the top eight or the next 16 for the play-offs.

It's difficult to look past the English and Spanish sides, but if you look at Inter Milan, they've had a decent enough start, and with the quality of players they've got, they could be the leading outsider.

With the English and Spanish sides, their squads are so strong, but the way other nation's league systems are and the way their games are scheduled, they try to protect their teams more than the English teams. They give them a break before big games in the Champions League whereas with the Premier League, we don't get that opportunity.

We could get to a point again, later down the line, where the English teams are a bit burnt out and the fixture congestion leading into those games is a bit too much.

Adrian: The scoreline looks good for City. However, not to pour cold water on Erling Haaland's goal, but his foot was high and he had no sight of where he was putting his foot in a tight area - surely that is not to be condoned. He didn't look at where the other players were and he showed disregard for their safety.

    Man City 5-0 Sparta Prague

    Manchester City

Speaking to TNT Sports about Erling Haaland's first goal against Sparta Prague, Manchester City team-mate Phil Foden said: "I just spoke to him - if I tried to do that, I'd pull my groin. I don't know how he did it I just think it's just his long legs. He's a freak isn't he. I've seen him score one similar against Borussia Dortmund."

  8. 'I don't think there's anyone else like Haaland'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 24 October

    Stephen Warnock
    Former Liverpool defender

We've seen it before with Erling Haaland, with that goal against Borussia Dortmund, which was a similar, acrobatic goal.

The only other player I've seen score goals like that is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He was the type of player that could get his body into certain positions and to the height that no-one else could.

The athleticism for such a big guy is remarkable. It just shows you that he doesn't care how he scores the goals, it's making sure he makes contact and he knows how to get into certain areas. I don't think there is anyone else who can score goals like him.

I've just never seen a goal like it. He jumps up with the athleticism of a NBA basketball player, his heel is at least up at head height of everyone else.

With his back to goal he just donkey-kicks it back into the net. It's a remarkable goal, it really is. It was eye-catching and frankly the kind of goal that only he can score.

Haaland is up into the top-14 in terms of all-time Champions League goals. It's frightening to think where he might end up.

  11. Haaland second fastest to hit 20 CL goals for one clubpublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 24 October

    Man City 5-0 Sparta Prague

Erling Haaland has become the second-fastest player to score 20 Champions League goals for one club, according to Opta.

Haaland has done so for Manchester City in 23 games with only one other players reaching the milestone faster. That was Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy.

  12. Haaland equals Drogbapublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 24 October

    Man City 5-0 Sparta Prague

Manchester City's Erling Haaland has now equalled the amount of goals Didier Drogba scored in the Champions League with 44.

The difference between the two players is how many appearances they both scored the amount of goals in. Drogba did so in 92, while Haaland has done it in 42.

Matheus Nunes scored one and provided two assists in Man City's 5-0 thrashing of Sparta Prague, but Conor McNamara isn't sure he'll nail down a regular starting spot in Pep Guardiola's side.

"It was probably one of the better performances we've seen from Nunes in a City shirt. I think Pep Guardiola does like him, they brought him into the club, but he's had his difficulties. He's had injuries at unfortunate times when he might have been about to impress.

"It's an extremely high standard to get into this team. It was noteable that he took the penalty - a lot of guys would have fancied it with Erling Haaland off the pitch but he was trusted to take it. I think that's a good status for him.

"But there were a few times his crosses didn't go so well. We always see the gesticulations of Guardiola [on the touchline], and he was arms-up. It wasn't completely flawless from Nunes but there were those eye-catching moments. That's got to help. Whether he starts those elite games, I'm not so sure yet. There's too much competition."

  15. Thuram hits late to give Inter winpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 24 October

    Young Boys 0-1 Inter Milan

    Emily Salley
    BBC Sport

Marcus Thuram scored an injury-time winner to hand Inter Milan a narrow 1-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League.

The substitute got in front of his marker to turn in Marko Arnoutovic's cross in the third minute of injury time.

It marked a moment of redemption for Arnautovic, who missed a penalty earlier in the second half after Jaouen Hadjam was penalised in the box for dragging down Denzel Dumfries by the neck.

Arnautovic's strike lacked power and Young Boys keeper David von Ballmoos guessed the right way, parrying the ball away before reacting quickly to stop Dumfries from burying the follow-up.

The result leaves Inter Milan with seven points in the league phase of the Champions League, while Young Boys remain without a point after three games.

  16. 'That will definitely matter for him'published at 09:56 British Summer Time 24 October

    RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on Football Daily

Darwin Nunez 'stole' a goal from Mohamed Salah, but Nedum Onuoha believes that will give the Uruguayan striker confidence.

"There will be questions about whether he could have let it go in, but I think the poacher's instinct was definitely there. I don't think it will shift the narrative against him because there are people who think he misses too many chances and at times be on the periphery of games.

"A goal is a goal. Strikers build themselves up on those goals that are scored, it could be the start of a run for him. The fact that it was six inches out doesn't really matter. It was good for him, he was very much a part of the game, he had some shots and other opportunities. It's always nice when a striker scores and has a big smile on their face. I think that will definitely matter for him."

  17. Celtic analysispublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 24 October

    Atalanta 0-0 Celtic

    Andy Burke
    BBC Sport Scotland

"An assault on your spirit" was how Brendan Rodgers described that walloping in the Westfalenstadion. The manager was bullish in his insistence he would not compromise his attacking philosophy for a more pragmatic style against the bigger guns in this competition.

This was a different Celtic though, a more resolute and organised unit than the side that crumbled against Dortmund.

Adam Idah starting ahead of Kyogo to lead the line was a tactical switch from Rodgers, with the Irishman offering himself up for direct balls when Celtic needed to relieve the pressure and get themselves up the pitch.

In the absence of defensive lynchpin Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales and Auston Trusty stood up with towering displays at the heart of the defence. Those two were standouts in a tremendous collective effort.

The midfield trio of Callum McGregor, Arne Engels and Reo Hatate put in tireless shifts, and while the team's use of the ball could have been better at times, they eliminated the type of individual errors that proved so ruinous in Dortmund.

For too long Celtic have been a soft touch away from home in Europe, but Rodgers may finally have struck upon a gameplan that makes them an altogether more resilient side away from the comforts of Celtic Park.

Former Manchester City defender on Football Daily's Champions League Debrief

The thing I found impressive was [Liverpool] made Leipzig look so poor. The way that Leipzig play - high energy, go and get at them, press high, win the ball, force turnovers and have tonnes of opportunities - it didn't feel like that type of Leipzig side. I have to give Liverpool credit for that.

Liverpool are very much in a groove. To know that they can play better while also winning the majority of their games is a pretty nice position to be in I bet.

  19. Celtic's defence earns pointpublished at 09:33 British Summer Time 24 October

    Atalanta 0-0 Celtic

    Andy Burke
    BBC Sport Scotland

A terrific defensive display brought Celtic an important Champions League point as they held last season's Europa League winners Atalanta to a goalless draw in Bergamo.

Having lost all previous seven matches on Italian soil in this competition, Celtic resisted periods of immense pressure from the hosts to take a significant step in their bid to reach the knockout stage.

Kasper Schmeichel made some excellent saves and Atalanta wasted a number of good opportunities, but the defensive discipline of the Scottish champions ultimately frustrated the Serie A side.

After two tough away matches, Celtic now have back-to-back home games against RB Leipzig and Club Brugge with four points in the bank, while next up for Atalanta is a trip to Stuttgart.

Celtic's fortunes could hardly have fluctuated more wildly across their opening two Champions League matches – the high of a tremendous 5-1 home win against Slovan Bratislava on matchday one, followed by a chastening 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

The Scottish champions looked a far more compact team than the ragged outfit that were picked apart in Germany as they rebounded from that loss by keeping just their second ever away clean sheet in the competition.

  20. Phil Neville under pressure in Portlandpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 24 October

    Vancouver Whitecaps 0-5 Portland Timbers

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Phil Neville is under huge pressure this morning after his Portland Timbers side were hammered on home soil in the remaining MLS wild-card match.

Portland were granted home advantage against the Vancouver Whitecaps, whose stadium was not available for the game.

It didn't help them though as the Canadian side scored three times in a matter of minutes in the first half to effectively end Portland's season and leave them to complete the game in front of a virtually empty stadium.

New Scotland international Ryan Gauld scored a hat-trick for Vancouver, who advance to a best of three meeting with Western Conference champions LAFC.

Neville joined Portland 12 months ago and has a contract that runs to 2026. It remains to be seen whether he gets the chance to fulfil it.
