  1. We need to accept injury problems - Artetapublished at 13:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Arsenal v Monaco (20:00 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says his side must find a way to cope with a growing injury list as they prepare to host French side Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Gunners are particularly short defensively, with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu out and doubts over the fitness of Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Jurrien Timber and midfielder Thomas Partey - who often fills in at the back - missed full training on Tuesday.

Arsenal are 10th in the Champions League standings on 10 points, ahead of Monaco on goal difference.

"It is what it is. We need to accept the reality and move forward," Arteta said on Tuesday.

"We have to manage a lot of the players. Some of them probably aren't going to be fit. Some are still a doubt. We have 24 hours to make a decision and hopefully it will be the right ones."

That win moved Bayern Munich up to eighth place on 12 points.

The leaders of the German Bundesliga may well drop back out of the top eight after tonight's matches, but they face teams in the bottom half of the table in their remaining two fixtures - at Feyenoord (22 Jan) and home to Slovan Bratislava (29 Jan).

One side looking to oust Bayern from the top eight will be Arsenal. More on the Gunners' match at home to Monaco next...

  3. Olise double helps Bayern thrash Shakhtarpublished at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

Bayern Munich came from behind to thrash Shakhtar Donetsk and boost their chances of automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16.

Brazilian forward Kevin put hosts Shakhtar in front with just five minutes gone, curling beautifully into the far corner for his first goal in the competition.

Falling behind seemed to spur on Bayern, who were without England international Harry Kane because of injury, and they were level six minutes later when Konrad Laimer lashed into the roof of the net.

Muller had a simple tap-in moments later, scoring his 55th goal in the Champions League, to ensure Bayern went in with a half-time lead.

Olise grabbed the third from the penalty spot after Alaa Ghram fouled Sacha Boey and Musiala further widened the gap with a simple finish following some slick footwork.

France forward Michael Olise, who joined from Crystal Palace for £50m in the summer, rounded off the scoring with a fine individual effort, beating several players before wrong-footing the goalkeeper and sliding into an open goal.

  4. PSG earn important win at Salzburgpublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

Paris St-Germain claimed a comfortable victory at Red Bull Salzburg to record their first win in the Champions League since September.

Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Schlager made several fine saves, including a double stop to keep out Achraf Hakimi and Goncalo Ramos, before he was eventually beaten by the latter from close range.

A patient approach paid dividends in the second half when Nuno Mendes grabbed PSG's second and Salzburg's heads dropped when Desire Doue extended the lead in the closing stages.

Victory moves PSG up one place to 24th in the standings - a position which would see them through to the play-off phase - and offers hope of playing knockout football in the Champions League for a 13th successive campaign.

However, PSG still have Manchester City and Stuttgart to play in January.

Salzburg remain 32nd with just one win from their six outings and close out their campaign against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid next month.

New Champions League format is just softening up supporters for another European Super League run in the future. Don’t think that idea has gone away. It pre-dates the Champions League itself.

  6. Important win for Real, but concern over Mbappepublished at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Atalanta 2-3 Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe has struggled to hit the heights he reached at Paris St-Germain since joining Real Madrid in the summer, but he looked up for Tuesday's Champions League tie at Atalanta from the outset.

The forward's clever runs in behind were stretching and panicking the hosts' defence, and his goal served as a reminder of the incredible talent he possesses.

He has scored 50 goals in 79 appearances in the Champions League, becoming the second-youngest player (25 years and 356 days) to reach this figure in the competition after Lionel Messi in 2012 (24 years and 284 days).

His performance made the injury he suffered all the more concerning, although Real fans will be encouraged he was able to go off unaided.

They will be hoping he will not be added to an injury list that already features Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao and Eduardo Camavinga.

"Mbappe has some discomfort in his hamstrings. It doesn't seem serious but we'll see [on Wednesday]," said Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.

"He couldn't sprint, it hurt him a bit and we thought it best to replace him."

Kylian Mbappe scored his 50th Champions League goal while Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham were also on target as Real Madrid secured a much-needed win against Atalanta.

France international Mbappe got the ball rolling with a goal in the 10th minute, breaking clear of his marker before finishing smartly.

Atalanta then equalised on the stroke of half-time when Charles De Ketelaere scored a penalty after Sead Kolasinac went down inside the box.

Real battled back after the break as Vinicius Jr found the bottom corner with a neat finish on his return from a hamstring injury before Bellingham fired home for his first goal in the Champions League this season.

Ademola Lookman gave Atalanta hope with his 11th goal of the season, whipping a shot in at the near post, but Real held off late pressure to take three crucial points.

The win moved Real up to 18th in the 36-team league and three points off the top eight, who qualify automatically for the last 16.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are ninth on 11 points.

I think clubs not being able to rotate is the whole point of the new format, to make games competitive for as long as possible. My concern with the new format is the knockout phase. In principle, the higher up the league you finish the easier the next round draw, but looking at the table I see a Real Madrid lurking mid to lower part of the table.

If anything, Liverpool have underperformed and have been lucky with the timings of the 'big' fixtures (every big club has been in a dip when Liverpool have played them). It's too early in the season to call it fully, but if their luck holds out then no-one is catching them.

  18. 'Celtic are clearly evolving at this level'published at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Dinamo Zagreb 0-0 Celtic

    Martin Dowden
    BBC Sport Scotland

Celtic came into this fixture knowing three points all but guaranteed progress to the latter stages of the Champions League.

Their haul of one remains of good value, extending their unbeaten run and leaving progression very much there for the taking. They are clearly evolving at this level, given the points tally keeps ticking on.

The only slight frustration might be the lack of direct threat, especially having had so much of the ball in the opening half [against Dinamo Zagreb].

It felt like a game they had a real chance of winning at that stage.

With that home fixture to come against Young Boys in January, they'll turn their attention to the Scottish League Cup final against Rangers at Hampden on Sunday.

Their [defensive] performance levels have been really good.

The disappointment will be they've not created as many chances as they'd have liked.

It shows you how far they've come, that they're disappointed to an extent.

Nine points after six games. Before this started, you'd say that's a great position for Celtic to be in.
