Chelsea have added youngsters Ato Ampah, Harrison McMahon, Kaiden Wilson, Richard Olise (brother of Michael), Josh Acheampong and Harrison Murray-Campbell to their Conference League squad to play Astana in Kazakhstan.

Tyrique George, Kiano Dyer, Sam Rak-Sakyi and Shim Mheuka were already included.

Manager Enzo Maresca is due to speak to the media this morning after getting special dispensation to hold the club's news conference at their training ground despite Uefa usually stipulating match previews are done in the country the match is played.

It is part of an effort from Chelsea to manage their workload.

The Chelsea squad face an eight-hour flight, and will play Thursday's tie in a time zone that is five hours ahead and at temperatures that are forecasted to be as low as minus 11.

John Cross reports that while Saudi Arabia is set to be confirmed as the host of the 2034 tournament at a Fifa Congress meeting later today, not every member country is happy at the prospect of a repeat of the scheduling that saw the 2022 World Cup in Qatar staged in November and December.

    Girona 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was unhappy with the intensity his players showed against Girona, especially with the way they failed to press the Spanish side, who were allowed 13 shots at goal.

"If you ask me about all the six games, I am really pleased with the results and I am really pleased with the five games [leading up to the Girona match] but I am far from pleased with the performance," said Slot.

"[We had] hardly any control over the game, maybe the second half was a bit better, but I am trying to be positive."

Celtic claimed another valuable away point in a goalless draw at Dinamo Zargreb to leave progression to the latter stages in their grasp.

Brendan Rodgers' side stretched their unbeaten Champions League run to four matches to move to nine points, with a home tie against Young Boys to follow in January, followed by a trip to Aston Villa.

They came into this fixture knowing three points all but guaranteed progress to the latter stages of the Champions League.

But their haul of one remains of good value, leaving progression very much there for the taking.

Remember, Opta is predicting that 10 points will give the Scottish champions more than a 90% chance of securing a play-off place.

Aston Villa were twice pegged back by winless RB Leipzig but scored late to all but clinch a place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Victory leaves Unai Emery's side third in the standings with 13 points after six games and in a strong position to finish in the top eight and qualify directly for the last 16.

Liverpool are all but through to the Champions League last 16 after Mohamed Salah's penalty clinched victory at Girona.

Arne Slot's side were gifted a second-half spot-kick when former Manchester United and Everton midfielder Donny van de Beek caught Luis Diaz's heel in the penalty area.

Salah dispatched his penalty with ease, sending Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga the wrong way to net his 46th Champions League goal.

Returning visiting goalkeeper Alisson Becker made a handful of good saves as Liverpool continued their perfect start to this season's Champions League, and the Reds will be assured of a top-eight finish - sending them straight into the last 16 - if they get a point from their final two fixtures in the league phase.
