Manchester City were comfortably beaten in Spain in 2021 but put in a better performance in the return leg, when they pressed Barcelona.

They seem to have learned from that experience and they are really going for it.

Barca have struggled to cope with Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw. But City have to take these chances.

More superb play from Khadija Shaw to set up Vivianne Miedema, who is denied by brilliant defending by ex-Manchester United full-back Ona Batlle.

The ball falls to Lauren Hemp, she takes a touch to set herself in the penalty area and strikes well at goal. I don't think Cata Coll got a touch and the ball bounces off the left upright.

So close for City. Great game this one. Both sides have now hit the woodwork.

Manchester City fancy this. Khadija Shaw gets into the penalty area after a fine run down the right and Vivianne Miedema has a shot blocked.

Barcelona try to counter down their left and Laia Aleixandri chops down her fellow Spaniard Alexia Putellas and gets a very deserved yellow card.

Once more, Cata Coll has to show some nifty footwork to clear only yards from her goalline with Jess Park sprinting in. It looks great if you get away with it. That's twice the Barca keeper, looking the most composed person in the stadium, has got away with it.

When you have waited that long to be back in the Champions League, what better match than to have the champions visit your home.

What better way to work out where you stand in this European elite. Whether you are up there and ready to compete, or whether it is going to take a little bit longer.

Nearly a dream start for Caroline Graham-Hansen and Barcelona as she shoots against the post. Did Ayaka Yamashita get a touch in the City goal? If she did, it's a great save.

Either way, Barcelona so close to getting an early goal.

I want to see Manchester City on the front foot, I want to see them press Barcelona, be aggressive and force them into mistakes. If you can press them high, get the ball back around the 18-yard box that is where you are likely to cause them problems. But it takes a very brave team to go all-out against Barcelona.

Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor said his side are playing the best team in the world in Barcelona.

"I would say they are the best team in the world, especially over the period of the last four or five years," he said.

"Barcelona have really dominated in this last three-year period. In terms of that taking the pressure off us, not at all. We've worked tremendously hard to be here.

"The cream always rises to the top. We want to see the best players on the best stage and this is what it is."

Barcelona defender Ingrid Engen speaking to DAZN: "We talk about it [winning the Champions League again] before. These are the games we are looking most forward to. It's going to be a great game and we are ready to start again."

On the challenge Man City's forwards pose: "They have some really strong attackers with some very good quality so it will be our job to try to stop them as good as possible. Also we will look at what we can do with the ball to challenge them."

On extending Barca's unbeaten start to the season: "It's really important to get a good start. We will go in and hopefully win it."

The Athletic's Barcelona correspondent, Pol Ballus, tells BBC Radio 5 Live how valued Keira Walsh is at the club: "She is really appreciated here in Barcelona. The fact she became a starter in a midfield where you have Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Patri Guijarro tells you a lot.

"We all know the signing of Keira Walsh was partly fuelled by the long-term injury to Putellas before the Euros. But she has established herself in a really positive way. She is a really loved member of the dressing room.

"There were a lot of rumours of her being about to leave last summer, there was a lot of interest from England and Barcelona said no. She is expected to start against Man City and she is in good form."

It's going to be an incredible game. When I was at Man City we played Barcelona away and got the tactics wrong. You don't want to just sit in and just let them have the ball. Then at home we went for it, we pressed them. They do not like pressure on the ball.

Man City have to play their style because they play lovely football, but they have to go for it at the same time.

You can't let them get into a rhythm.

Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood says her club "belong" in the Women's Champions League and winning the competition would be the "pinnacle".

Tonight's match against Barcelona is City's first in the competition since falling to a 4-2 quarter-final aggregate loss to the Catalan side in March 2021.

Greenwood, who won the tournament with Lyon in 2020, said in the pre-match conference: "It's the pinnacle to win the Champions League. To win this competition is another level. It's exciting. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. We belong here. We’ve missed out and been frustrated by that."

England defender Greenwood and Chloe Kelly are the only two players remaining at City who featured in the club's last Champions League game, a 2-1 second-leg win over Barca in 2021.

"I don't remember it clearly, but I do remember the game," said Greenwood. "We played really well. Our team has changed so much since then. The way we prepare is different. We look different now and a lot more prepared."
