  1. Hodgson 'out of hospital and doing well'published at 15:55 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

It was widely reported last week that Palace were set to sack Hodgson, with the club 15th in the Premier League and five points clear of the relegation zone.

But the Eagles cancelled a news conference on Thursday after the 76-year-old became unwell following the team's training session that morning and was taken to hospital.

Palace have confirmed that Hodgson is now "out of hospital and doing well".

There has been something of a malaise around Crystal Palace recently, but they were actually very spirited in their defeat against Chelsea on Monday.

The Eagles have missed their big guns, though. Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze have not played enough for them this season.

I looked into it for the Monday Night Club and Olise has made only eight Premier League starts in 2023-24. Eze has 13, but together they have only made four. They are the go-to guys for them in an attacking sense and they haven't been available.

Everton will see this as an incredible opportunity to end their long wait for three points and I bet Sean Dyche has them fired up.

They need a win anyway, but it will be especially important if the teams around them pick up points earlier in the weekend.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

    • Following their 3-2 win at Selhurst Park back in November, Everton are looking to complete their first league double over Crystal Palace since 2004-05.
    • Palace are winless in their last eight visits to Goodison Park (D3 L5).
    • The Eagles have lost their last three away Premier League matches, shipping 11 goals in these games. Palace haven’t lost more consecutively since losing their final four away games in the 2019-20 season.
    • Since a run of four consecutive Premier League wins in December, Everton haven’t won any of their last seven games (D3 L4). They have only scored four times in this run and failed to find the net in four of their last five.
    • In all competitions, Everton’s only win in their last 11 games (D5 L5) was at home against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup in January.
    • Everton manager Sean Dyche has won seven Premier League matches against Crystal Palace, only winning more against Bournemouth (8). He’s unbeaten in seven against the Eagles (W4 D3) since a 2-0 defeat with Burnley in November 2019.

Matt, Birmingham: Villa had a good away win at the weekend, but have had mixed form since Christmas and picked up some major injuries to the likes of Kamara and Carlos. Do you think they will make top four or will they be caught by United and/or Spurs?

Phil: Hi Matt. The injuries are a real blow to Villa but I do think Unai Emery has got something very good going at Villa Park and they have a massive opportunity to reach the top four.

In a previous question I tipped Manchester United to sneak into the top four but I genuinely have little conviction on who might get the fourth place out of Villa, United and Spurs. All three are in that fight.

What we do know is that Villa are fourth right now and in pole position so it is in their hands.

  8. Palace 'need a result tonight'published at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace will start Monday's crucial Premier League game five points above the relegation zone and hoping to avoid a third successive league defeat.

Manager Roy Hodgson will not be on the touchline, however, after he was taken ill during a training session on Thursday.

Matt Woosnam, who covers Crystal Palace for The Athletic, told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "For Palace, [losing the match] would certainly show they're very much in a relegation battle. It would give Everton presumably a bit more confidence and it would further dent Palace's confidence after a very bruising few weeks.

"Palace definitely need a result tonight. Everton is a very difficult place to go, it's an intimidating atmosphere and it's difficult circumstances given what happened with Roy Hodgson at the end of last week."

  9. Former Cherries chairman Mitchell dies, aged 69published at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Some sad news to bring you this afternoon.

Former Bournemouth owner and chairman Eddie Mitchell has died at the age of 69.

Mitchell owned the Cherries between 2009 and 2013 and oversaw the start of the club's run from League Two to the Premier League.

The property developer was responsible for Eddie Howe's return to Bournemouth for a second spell as manager in 2012.

In a statement to BBC Sport, the Mitchell family said he "passed away peacefully at home on Saturday".

Alan: Phil, how do you explain Newcastle's demise this season? From a CL place to possibly missing out on European football completely next season.

Phil: Variety of factors, Alan, play into them not having quite as good a season this time out.

I felt they missed a trick not signing a “number 6” in the summer and of course Sandro Tonali, a big money purchase, was then banned, which Newcastle could not have foreseen.

There have been injuries, loss of form and a Champions League campaign to factor in.

I actually think Eddie Howe and his players over-achieved hugely last season, so we should remember that.

And all is not lost for Newcastle United yet. They are still in the FA Cup and have the chance to rise further up the Premier League table.

  13. Toffees 'sick' of waiting - Stubbspublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

Everton fans are "sick" of their appeal over a 10-point deduction being "dragged on".

That's the view of club legend Alan Stubbs as fans, players and anyone associated with the club await an outcome, which is expected soon.

Speaking on a special episode of The Football News Show all about the Toffees, Stubbs said: "There was a lot of bewilderment from a lot of people within football and outside when the initial penalty of 10 points was given.

"From Everton fans there was a lot of anger and animosity. Realistically we as Everton fans are sick of it. We're sick of how long it's getting dragged on. It's a prolonged process.

"We were told it was going to be the middle of February, and then Wednesday or today, but there is still no news."

Joe the worried Evertonian: Hi Phil, Why is everything taking so long with Everton? What don't the Premier League like about 777 that means it has taken months to approve, while it has taken only weeks to approve Jim Ratcliffe for Manchester United? As an add-on question, considering the appeal and the second points deduction, do you think Everton will be on a net positive, negative or zero after all is said and done?

Phil: Hello, Joe. Not the only worried Evertonian I imagine.

There is clearly an awful lot to work through with 777 and I would share some of those concerns given their chequered track record. Even if it gets the go-ahead, they'll have a lot to do to win over many Everton fans.

The Premier League still clearly need convincing they are fit to take over whereas Sir Jim Ratcliffe was pretty much an open and shut case.

Guessing on your last question, Joe, but I don’t see Everton getting all their points back so I would say negative points – although I stress that is largely guesswork as no one really knows.

  15. 'We've got to make the game about us' - Dychepublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

Everton manager Sean Dyche has stressed the importance of "making the game about us" as his side prepare to face fellow strugglers Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on Monday.

Dyche said his players will have "an awareness and tactical understanding" of the opposition, but added: "I've always kept the straightforward thinking that it's about us."

Dan: Hi Phil. Do you think Curtis Jones deserves to be in the England set up in place of Kalvin Phillips, who is a walking disaster right now?

Phil: He was certainly pressing his claims, Dan, and he must now hope the injury he sustained at Brentford on Saturday is not a long-term problem.

Jones is having a top-class season at Liverpool and I’m sure he would have been in manager Gareth Southgate’s thoughts, although there is a lot of competition and I suspect plans in that midfield area are pretty much drawn up. Always room for a late contender, though, so we shall see.

Phillips is a different matter altogether, a much wider issue.

I do not see how he warrants inclusion in the England squad at present because he barely played at Manchester City this season and his start at West Ham has been nothing short of a complete nightmare.

My personal view is that he should not be in the England squad but Southgate is very loyal and I suspect he will stick with Phillips for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. High risk though as, to be brutal, he does not deserve to be in the squad.

More on Sunderland sacking Michael Beale...

The 43-year-old was given a two-and-a-half year deal in December when he replaced the popular Tony Mowbray.

However, Beale lost six games during his short stint including a 3-0 home FA Cup defeat by rivals Newcastle United.

And it seems Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Mowbray's new club Birmingham was the final straw.
