  1. 'We need to be perfect'published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30)

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on repeating last season's shock away victory over Manchester City: "We hit a very high level . We need to play almost the perfect game. Especially in defence. I think we are good there generally, and don't give much away. But this season maybe given more chances and goals than usual. That's the big thing we need to adjust.

"I think the last 24 games I have changed my back three or four, or five with the goalkeeper, a lot of times. 19 times we played a different set-up at the back which doesn't help. There are things we need to avoid regardless of how many players we are changing."

  2. No fresh injury concerns for Beespublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Brentford

Brenford boss Thomas Frank says he has no fresh injury concerns for the trip to the Etihad Stadium.

The Bees boss said German winger Kevin Schade (groin) and full-back Aaron Hickey (hamstring) are "still a bit further down the line" in terms of their comebacks from long-term injuries.

Nick, Walsall: Hi Phil. If the England Euros squad was picked tomorrow, would you have Raheem Sterling in it?

Phil: Hello, Nick. No I wouldn’t. I don’t think Raheem Sterling’s form has been good enough and there is now so much quality ahead of him that I have a feeling England have moved on from him and it would take injuries to bring Sterling back into contention.

Who would you leave out? Bukayo Saka is quite simply untouchable and you have the likes of Phil Foden, who can play in the wide positions or in a flexible role.

I just think manager Gareth Southgate now has his attacking options – but never say never as there is still plenty that can happen between now and when the squad is picked. Marcus Rashford’s form has been mixed and Jack Grealish is injured. Opportunities can come up.

If the squad was picked tomorrow? No.

  4. 'Can't run fast looking back'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on whether he is worried about their current Premier League position: "One thing is very sure. We can't change anything if we look at the table. If were seventh, we would like to push for sixth. What are we 14th or 15th? We want to push for a position higher, then another position higher. I am a big believer if you are looking backwards when running forwards it's difficult to run fast.

"So I think we should focus on what's ahead of us, which is Manchester City away. The biggest challenge in the world right now in football. But we are ready for it and believe we will get something out of it."

  5. 'Wind-ups part of the game'published at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on Neal Maupay facing Kyle Walker after the pair exchanged words last time they played: "I don't know what's been said. Let's talk about football. Isn't that what we would like to discuss? I like to discuss football."

On Maupay being the 'wind-up king' of the Premier League: "I think all players are different and getting them to take what is important for them to perform, that I always respect. In terms of winding players up, it's part of the game. It's that part where there is a fine line not to cross. If he does that or not, I don't know. As far as I know Neal is a good guy and a good team-mate who is good for us."

John, Coventry: Phil - noticing a massive surge in blatant wrestling and holding in the box, have refs and VAR pretty much abandoned this to each other? Refs wait for VAR and VAR leaves it to refs, so nobody penalises it and coaches have realised they'll get away with it. Seems it's worse than pre-VAR due to this. Is there any awareness of this problem at PGMOL?

Phil: Hi John. I agree completely with you. Wasn’t there supposed to be a crackdown on this at the start of the season? If there was it seems to have been forgotten about.

I’m sure PGMOL remain aware of it but it has had no impact whatsoever as you see wrestling in every game.

Like so many of these things, if you started punishing people regularly it would stop – although the serious downside is you could have penalty awards running into double figures in the majority of games.

    It is a problem.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on Phil Foden, who scored a hat-trick when the sides last met: "How do we stop him? Good question. Phil Foden is a very good player. For me, he's the closest England get to a Ballon d'Or winner in the future. I think he has that potential, that level.

"I think he influences the game in so many ways. The last game he got on the end of three situations and scored three goals. He is very at good dribbling, very good at sliding people in. He works very hard. He seems to have a good mentality - I don't know him personally - in terms of working hard. So he is very good. But they have so many good players. The whole team basically!"

  8. 'We have to believe'published at 14:00 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on the challenge of facing Manchester City: "It's odds against but we have to believe we can do something, get something out of the game. They are best team in the world right now. They won the treble last year, they are still right in the top of the Premier League.

"I know they are a few points behind Liverpool but it's about where they are with three games to go. They are also in the mix to win the Champions League and have an incredible group of players. It is a big challenge but still only 11 players on the pitch so let's see."

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund touched on his own goalscoring exploits after his double gave the Red Devils a 2-1 win at Luton Town, but said picking up three points in the Premier League was the crucial thing.

"To help the team to get three points is the most important thing," he told BBC Sport. "We made it hard for ourselves and it was nervous at the end. I am grateful for the win."

Sam, Northampton: Hi Phil. How high of a ceiling do you think Rasmus Hojlund has? Do you think he can reach the levels of Haaland and Kane?

Phil: Hello Sam. Seen a lot of Rasmus Hojlund and I think the ceiling is very high. Haaland and Kane level? Very early to say that but I like what I have seen very much. I saw him again at Kenilworth Road yesterday and thought he was top class.

Even when the goals were not coming (and also the service was poor) he showed a fantastic attitude and work ethic and now he is getting his reward by scoring in six successive Premier League games.

He seems to have all the tools to be a high-class striker and is only 21 so has years of potential improvement ahead of him.

Hojlund has delivered, along with Kobbie Mainoo, when the supposedly established, experienced leaders in the Manchester United side struggled.

Sagar from Pune, India: Hi Phil. Who will qualify for UCL next season? Which team will finish fourth along with Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. Will Manchester United be able to sneak in fourth place?

Phil: I think, as you seem to suggest, the top three is sorted and then it will be a real fight for fourth between Aston Villa, Spurs and Manchester United.

I would not predict the outcome of that with any confidence whatsoever, Sagar, but if you pushed me on it I still have a sneaking feeling Manchester United might come through….although I stress I say that with little or no confidence. There’s conviction for you!!

Somewhere in there, the answer is Manchester United.

Jordan Nobbs celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Jordan Nobbs struck a wonderful winner as Aston Villa made light of suspended striker Rachel Daly's absence to beat Tottenham in the Women's Super League.

England midfielder Nobbs flashed home a superb first-time finish from 20 yards with the outside of her right boot to settle an entertaining encounter.

Adriana Leon had initially put Villa ahead, poking home inside Barbora Votikova's near post, but Amy James-Turner headed Spurs level from Eveliina Summanen's free-kick.

However, Nobbs won it in style - and almost scored a second to truly cement the points, steering Kenza Dali's inviting pull-back onto the crossbar.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Brentford striker Ivan Toney: "He is so dangerous.

"He's a master to use his body for the second ball, good finishing, you can link with him - he's one of the best I've ever seen [at that].

"A few weeks ago the goal we conceded [to him] we defended not properly but he did it really well."

Les, Bebington: Can Liverpool win a quadruple this season? They have injuries but seem to be able to shake them off. Perfect Klopp farewell?

Phil: The answer to this has to be “yes”, Les. Premier League leaders, in the Carabao Cup final, favourites for the Europa League and progressing well with a home draw against Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round. It’s all there for them.

They are also in superb form and while there will be injury concerns about keeper Alisson and striker Diogo Jota after this weekend to add to other problems, Jurgen Klopp’s squad looks full of confidence and dynamism.

Four trophies is a big task – but I reckon Klopp will waltz off into the sunset with at least one piece of silverware this season.

  17. Brentford 'exceptional' - but it's an 'opportunity' for uspublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on the challenge posed by Brentford:

"We created a lot against Chelsea when lately few teams created chances against them but it doesn't make tomorrow easier because the games against Brentford in the past have always been so difficult.

"They are exceptional for the way they play.

"But it is an opportunity to go one point above Arsenal in second and be closer to Liverpool. I don't know if we're going to win the Premier League but we are still there and this is why we continue.

"We have to continue to improve and focus and be in the title race."

Spurs boss Ange PostecoglouImage source, Getty Images

Luke, Leicester: Has the Ange Postecoglou bubble burst at Spurs? He no longer seems to be flavour of the month.

Phil: Far too early for that, Luke. I think most Spurs fans would have grabbed at fifth place, two points off the Champions League places, at this stage if they’d been offered it at the start of the season.

The cups have been a disappointment but I suppose they can now focus entirely on a top-four challenge.

Where I would have concerns is that I felt Saturday’s home loss to Wolves had been coming. They went behind against Brentford and Brighton and while they won both, there was that nagging feeling that they always give teams a chance and they would not be able to escape in every game.

This, however, is part of the all-out attacking strategy Postecoglou employs. It is the price on the ticket, if you like, and Spurs fans have bought in, although they won’t like losing too many.

Not sure he was ever “flavour of the month”. I think all the positives were simply a natural response to the way he changed the mood and playing style at Spurs after the stodge of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

  19. 'People demand from us'published at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Manchester City v Brentford (Tue, 19:30 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on expectations: "People demand from us because we are the only team to have achieved what we have achieved.

"We have to live with that. We know how difficult it is. It's you who believes it is easy, not us.

"I have had this experience in my previous club, especially Barcelona. It is an honour. We know what it is and we have to continue doing what we are doing.

"It is about how we behave and perform - and I am the first to demand it [perfection] for 95 minutes, knowing it is impossible."

Captain Ceri Holland scored and was sent off yesterday afternoon as Liverpool secured their first Women's Super League win of 2024 with a narrow victory at Brighton.

Holland took advantage of a misplaced clearance by Brighton goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley to score the only goal at Broadfield Stadium.

Liverpool had the bulk of the chances, but were mostly held back by the hosts' well-organised defence.

Holland was dismissed in stoppage time for a second yellow card.

Liverpool stay fifth in the table, two points behind Manchester United in fourth.
